DSR-DU1/PS DVCAM Compact Hard-Disk Unit - compatible with DVCAM camcorders Overview Expanding DVCAM production. Professional Video Production is now seeking more lower-cost equipment that will bring an increase in production efficiency and a reduction in running costs, due to diversification in service and program content in alignment with the advent of the DTV era. Sony introduces the DSR-DU1 DVCAM Video Disk Unit employing 2.5" hard-disk drive with 40GB capacity, to enhance the DVCAM production chain. This hard-disk unit is not a replacement media for tape, but a complementary product. The DSR-DU1 offers workflow innovation by providing production efficiency and flexibility, allowing instant content checking, EDL creation and quick start of editing, as well as acquisition in both media (hard-disk and tape). No burden of logging process by direct file access from NLE After shooting, the unit can be removed from the camcorder and connected to a non-linear editor via i.link cable. Then the editing operation can begin immediately without capturing in x1 normal speed. Due to direct file access from the compatible non-linear editor on the PC, the burden of the logging process common to non-linear editing, can be drastically reduced. In addition, time code information of record start, stop and cue points generated during acquisition is stored in the DSR-DU1 and is transferred to the editor together with clips. Flexible shooting with simultaneous recording on both hard-disk drive and tape The DSR-DU1 allows recording on both media (hard-disk and tape) simultaneously. For instance, use the DSR-DU1 for non-linear editing with higher efficiency and keep the tape as archive. Or if saving raw shooting materials as archive is not required, record on hard-disk only to save tape media cost. The benefits from this function are that there is no loss of quality in tape exchanges and shooting can be DSR-DU1/PS 1
accomplished with more confidence. Compatibility with current DVCAM camcorders The benefits of hard-disk recording do not mean that large financial investment is required to buy new camcorders, the DSR-DU1 can be used together with DVCAM camcorders currently in use, both shouldertype (DSR-570WSP) and hand-held type (DSR-PD150P). 3-hour DVCAM/DV recording Incorporating a 2.5-inch 40GB hard-drive, the DSR-DU1 records 25Mb/s DVCAM or DV stream video & audio signal as files for up to 3 hours, which is the same maximum recording time as DVCAM tape. Where the DSR-DU1 is used with hand-held camcorders such as DSR-PD150P, much increased recording time is available than with Mini-cassette tape. Versatile shooting functions The DSR-DU1 has a cache recording function that helps to avoid loss of quality in important scenes by continuous buffering in internal memory with 8 seconds at maximum. Interval recording (time-lapse) which is useful for scientific applications such as observation of ecology for animals or plants, and shooting data recording (time code of rec start, stop and cue point) are also available. Quick viewing of shooting materials Thanks to VTR-like operation keys and hard-disk technology, the DSR-DU1 enables quick viewing of shooting materials in random access. By using Previous/Next keys it is possible to jump quickly to a rec start point of any clip. Compact source feeder with support of two protocols on i.link The DSR-DU1 incorporates i.link interface supporting two types of protocols, AV/C and SBP2. Thanks to this feature, the unit can be a feeder for dubbing with current camcorders/vtrs and for capturing from conventional non-linear editors using AV/C protocol, as well as for direct file access from compatible editors using SBP2 protocol. Features DVCAM/DV 3-hour file recording The DSR-DU1 incorporates a 2.5-inch, 40GB hard disk drive. It can record 25Mb/s DVCAM/DV stream video & audio signals as files for up to 3 hours. A clip (file) is created by an action of REC / REC Pause on the camcorder or START / STOP on the DSR-DU1. Easy installation to DVCAM/DV camcorders The DSR-DU1 can be used with camcorders : DSR-570WSP, 500WSP, 370P, 300AP, 250P, PD150P, PD100AP, PDX10P and DCR-VX2000 (consumer DV). Using a CA-DU1 camera adaptor employing slot-in mechanism, the DSR-DU1 can easily and quickly be mounted or demounted on shoulder-type camcorders. In the case of a system with a hand-held camcorder, the DSR-DU1 can simply be connected to the camcorder with a single i.link cable. i.link interface with AV/C & SBP2 protocols The i.link connector of the DSR-DU1 supports two types of protocols, AV/C and SBP2. AV/C protocol is used for DVCAM/DV stream transfer in realtime, currently being used in conventional VTRto-VTR dubbing. This allows dubbing with current camcorders/vtrs, as well as capturing from conventional non-linear editors. SBP2 allows DVCAM/DV stream to be directly handled as files by compatible non-linear editing sysytems. Synchronization with camcorder operation When used for parallel recording with camcorders, the DSR-DU1 records in response to REC Start and Stop operation from the camcorder. Recording of the same video, audio and time codes is secured between tape and the DSR-DU1 in DUP mode. Therefore no separate operation is required. In addition, the recorded material can be checked through a viewfinder or an LCD monitor on the camcorder. Shock resistant mechanism The shock resistant mechanical design and the use of a buffer memory make the DSR-DU1 durable and highly reliable even when subjected to severe vibration. Moreover when used with shoulder-type camcorders, greater protection is obtained by the aluminium die-cast body of the camera adaptor CA- DU1. VTR-like operation keys The DSR-DU1 provides operational keys such as STOP, PLAY, Previous, Next, REC Start/Stop and Cue, enabling the unit to work as an independent feeder or recorder. Cache recording The DSR-DU1 has a cache recording function prevents loss of shooting quality in important scenes. A maximum 8 seconds of video & audio signals can be continuously buffered in internal memory prior to start of tape recording on the camcorder. Interval recording (Time-lapse) This function allows interval recording by setting the DSR-DU1 to automatically switch between record and stand-by modes. Interval time and recording time can be selected in the menu. This is useful for scientific applications such as observation. Shooting data recording The DSR-DU1 automatically records time codes of rec start and stop points during acquisition. Cue points are also marked by the button on the DSR-DU1 or from the supplied remote controller RM-LG2. This data can be DSR-DU1/PS 3
transferred to compatible non-linear editors via i.link. 625 / 525 compatible The DSR-DU1 offers a recording capability of both 625 (PAL) and 525 (NTSC) by menu setting. Compact & lightweight design Weighing just 500g and boasting a compact body of palm size, the DSR-DU1 assures excellent portability and mobility. Flexible DC operation The DSR-DU1 allows use of both BP-L type battery (with CA-DU1 adaptor) and consumer L-type battery (with supplied case). In addition, DC12V operation is available (with CA-DU1) as well as DC8.4V consumer type. Benefits of PrimeSupport Help when you need it with specialist telephone support provided in 5 languages.
