Windows 8.1 User Guide for ANU Staff This guide has been created to assist with basic tasks and navigating Windows 8.1. Further tips for using Windows 8.1 can be found on the IT Services website, or by phoning +61 2 612 54321. GENERAL Logging in and Logging Off Logging in Click anywhere on screen to bring up the login box. Enter your University ID and password, and press ENTER on the keyboard. Login screen Logging out Click on the avatar icon. After the drop-down menu is displayed, select the Sign out option. Expect immediate sign out of your session if using the Log off tile. GENERAL Navigate between Start and Desktop To navigate from the Start Screen to the Desktop screen: either select the Desktop Screen tile (as shown below) or press the Windows key on your keyboard. To navigate from the Desktop Screen to the Start screen: either press the Windows Key on your keyboard or the Windows icon found on the taskbar and on the sidebar of your Desktop Screen (as shown below). Note: the sidebar is hidden, and appears when hovering your cursor over the bottom right corner of your Desktop Screen. Keyboard Sidebar Desktop Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 2

GENERAL Start an application Navigate to the Applications Screen by selecting the down arrow found at the bottom left corner of the Start Screen. Locate and select an application. You may need to scroll right with the mouse wheel or cursor keys to see all of the apps. Alternatively, while on the Start Screen, search for an application, file or program by typing its name. You don t have to type into any particular location, just start typing the name. Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 3

GENERAL Accessing files To begin, open the Files window by selecting the File Explorer icon found on the taskbar of your Desktop Screen. Accessing files via the Home Directory Select the Home Drive (H:) icon displayed on the File Explorer window. Accessing files via a USB Select the Removable Device (E:) icon displayed on the Files Explorer window. Ejecting your USB To eject your USB, right click on Removable Device (E:) icon, and select the Eject option from the drop-down menu. Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 4

WEB BROWSERS Accessing web browsers Use the taskbar on your Desktop Screen or the tiles on your Start Screen to locate and select the browser of your preference. If the Menu bar does not display in your web broswer, pressing the Alt key on your keyboard will display it. Desktop toolbar Start screen Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 5

WEB BROWSERS Importing favourites from your previous computer Importing favourites to Internet Explorer 1. Locate the file that you saved from your previous computer with your IE favourites. 2. On the new computer, open File Explorer and go to C:\Users\University ID (eg C:\Users\u1234567) 3. Find the Favorites folder in the list and then paste the file from previous old computer into it. Importing favourites to Firefox 1. Open a Firefox browser and select Bookmarks, then Show All Bookmarks 2. In the new window that opens, select Import and Backup, then Import bookmarks from HTML 3. Locate the file that you saved from your previous computer with your IE favourites, and select Open. Follow any additional prompts and your bookmarks should appear in Firefox. Importing favourites to Chrome 1. Open Chrome and from the menu on the right-hand side, select Bookmarks 2. In the menu that appears, select Bookmark Manager, then Organize. From the menu, select Import bookmarks from HTML file 3. Locate the file that you saved from your previous computer with your IE favourites, and select Open. Follow any additional prompts and your bookmarks should appear in Firefox. Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 6

EMAIL Navigating Outlook The ribbon at the top of Outlook 2013 functions the way you are used to from Office 2010. The look is a bit different but the fundamentals are the same The way you navigate to your calendar, contacts and tasks has changed. To get to these you need to select Mail at the bottom of Outlook 2013. To find the options for account settings, out of office, rules and alerts and other useful things, select the File button on the ribbon: This will bring up the following menu: Key features: Account Settings: > > Add and remove accounts or change existing connection settings. > > Give others permissions to receive items and respond on your behalf Automatic Replies: > > Set up your Out of Office Manage Rules and Alerts: > > Manage rules and alters for your emails Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 7

EMAIL Adding a functional account (group mailboxes) 1. From your mailbox, select File 2. Select Account Settings, then Account Settings 3. In the window that appears, make sure you are on the Email tab and select on Change 4. From the window that appears, make sure you are on the Advanced tab and select on Add 5. Type in the mailbox name and select OK. The window should close. 6. Select Apply 7. When you go back to your mail the added mailbox should appear on the left-hand side, usually under your own mailbox. Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 8

EMAIL Setting up mailbox rules 1. From your mailbox, select File 2. Select Manage Rules and Alerts 3. The following window will appear: 4. To add a new rule, select New Rule and follow the prompts. 5. To add a new alert, select the Manage Alerts tab and follow the prompts. Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 9

EMAIL Setting up mailbox and calendar delegates 1. From your mailbox, select File 2. Select Account Settings, then Delegate Access 3. In the new window that opens, select Add 4. Find the person in the address book and select Add, then OK 5. Set the permission level for each applicable permission Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 10

EMAIL Mail archive 1. In Outlook, select File 2. Select Account Settings, then Account Settings 3. In the window that opens, select the Data Files tab. 4. Browse to the location of the relevant file and follow the prompts. Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 11

EMAIL Adding a room or other shared calendar 1. Open your calendar 2. On the left-hand side pane you will see My Calendar and below that Calendar. 3. Right-select Calendar and chose where you want to open the calendar from 4. Find the relevant calendar and follow the prompts. Windows 8.1 User Guide Version 20140320 12
