Introduction to Functional Skills Functional Skills provide learners with all the necessary tools and abilities to take an active role in their community, everyday life, education and the workplace. These learning resources provide the underpinning knowledge for learners to achieve mastery of Functional Skills in ICT. There are some skills in ICT which cannot be covered in a workbook. These will need to be observed by a tutor. Examples of this are: Whether correct procedures have been followed to start and shut down a computer; Whether a CD or memory stick has been removed safely; If the learner can select appropriate sources of information; If the learner uses discrimination in selecting information that matches requirements from a variety of sources and whether the learner evaluates the fitness for purpose. The learner should be able to transfer the skills learnt in the ICT resources and apply them appropriately in a variety of real-life situations. This is what makes them functional. Different situations call for different demands and skills from a learner. Factors to consider include the familiarity of the situation along with its complexity. The level of skills and knowledge they need to draw on will vary according to the task, as will the independence they need to demonstrate in finding an appropriate solution. The level of skills required to solve the problem should be straightforward with tutor guidance and support available. The skills required are more precise and require a greater level of judgement to find an appropriate solution. However, the context of the situation should still be accessible to the learner. Guidance is provided but a learner should be able to find problem-solving solutions independently. West Nottinghamshire College 3

At, choices must be independently made and evaluated, but guidance can be provided. The ICT Functional Skills Standards The Functional Skills Standards have been written to allow ability in ICT to be demonstrated in different topics. For example, changing the font size can be achieved in word processing, spreadsheets, email and databases. The bksb ICT Resources have been written in 9 different topics:. IT Basics;. Word Processing; 3. Images; 4. Spreadsheets; 5. Internet; 6. Email; 7. Health, Safety and Security; 8. File Management; 9. Databases. Each topic addresses the Functional Skills Specifications. There are tables showing which specifications are covered by each of the topics on the following pages. The highlighted items are covered in the ICT resources at the particular level. The bksb process for ICT Functional Skills. Initial Assessment Interactive software that identifies the learner s general current working level, for each of the 9 topics, from Entry 3 to. A report is produced which states the level of resources needed to be worked on for each of the topics. *. Learning Resources From the report the learner will need to work on the appropriate level for each topic in order to improve their skills. It is very likely that the learner will know some of the topics more than others, therefore providing a spiky profile. * We do not have an ICT Diagnostic Assessment in each of the topics because it is not needed. The Initial Assessment shows the level for each of the topics which a learner should work at. If the tasks are worked through at the suggested levels this will cover the Functional Skills Standards for that level within the particular topic. This will help to consolidate some tasks previously learnt and help the learner acquire the remaining skills. West Nottinghamshire College 5
