Concordance Concordance Image Concordance FYITM Welcome to the Introduction to Concordance On Demand Training Series! About Concordance Today the demand for high-quality litigation support software has never been greater. Concordance helps small to medium sized law firms handle an ever-increasing volume and complexity of evidentiary documents. Concordance is the application of choice for managing the information produced in the discovery process by providing an effective and cost-efficient tool to search, review, organize, produce, and share litigation documents that may take the form of scanned paper or electronic documents. Who Uses Concordance? Concordance is used by law firms, corporations, and government agencies. Concordance is suitable for use by the individual litigation professional working alone, or it can be extended to provide excellent support for litigation teams who divide work and collaborate.

Course Structure This course consists of a series of 4 modules. We highly recommend that students take course modules in the sequence provided in the following table: Module Section Description Module 1. Navigation Module 2. Query Basics Module 3. Tagging Basics Module 4. Advanced Tagging This module begins the course by introducing you to the rich set of tools and features of Concordance. You will learn to navigate among documents to view document text and information about documents. You will also learn to customize how you view document text and metadata. In addition to giving you practice working with the full text of documents, you will also learn ways to view images of document pages by using an add-in to Concordance called Concordance Native Viewer, which you use to perform page-level review. This module covers the tools you can use for finding documents that contain the search terms you are interested in. You will learn how to run both simple and advanced keyword searches from the search tools in Concordance. This module covers techniques for marking documents with tags. You learn how to use tags that have already been created. This skill becomes important as you proceed through a document review. You will also learn how to tag multiple documents, a skill that can come into play when, after reviewing a query result, you find a subset that will need more detailed analysis. Finally, you will learn how to determine who created or deleted tags and how tags are being used across the case. This module covers the skills needed to create and organize your own tags. You will learn how to create tags visible only to yourself and to create tags that may be used across members of a team. Additionally, you will learn to use tags to store and reuse queries. Finally, you will learn to delete and rename tags.

About the Sample Database Used in the Course Please note the following about the sample database used for training purposes in the course: In this course we will be working with Concordance using a sample database called the COWCO database, which is meant to represent litigation involving a fictitious business named COWCO. The COWCO database includes hundreds of documents both scanned documents and electronic files which, in a typical legal matter, would have been collected and saved in a file called COWCO. This database is provided with Concordance as a sample to allow you to practice without using your own case files. If you choose to download Concordance software after completing these modules, you will receive the COWCO database as part of your download and it will be available for you to practice with. Glossary The following terms, some of which are mentioned in the modules, are provided as a reference. Term Definition Case In Concordance, the database files, which correspond to and carry all data that Concordance uses to manage the legal case. A Concordance case contains all tables, full-text of documents, Concordance Native Viewer Discovery Field fields, tags, image mappings and user information. A LexisNexis software application that tightly integrates with Concordance for the purpose of reviewing native documents and images. Concordance Native Viewer provides: Near-native review. Save processing costs and time by reviewing documents in near native. Near-native redaction. Redact and mark-up documents without costly and time consuming processing. Color productions. Output color for greater visual impact to a PDF or TIFF. Native file-to-pdf productions. Produce a PDF directly from the native file. The original underlying text is retained, making the PDF file searchable and avoiding the need to perform OCR. 1. A formal pre-trial activity in which opposing counsel and other parties must turn over evidence deemed to be potentially relevant to issues that will be decided in court. 2. Case evidentiary documents submitted on paper or more commonly, as computer files. A table column that holds a specific information type. Many fields are available and already available when you create a

Native application Native file Native image Near-native review Production Table layout Table view Tag Concordance case. You can also create your own custom fields. The following list provides examples of fields that can be found in a typical Concordance case: BEGNO. Holds the number of the page that begins a document. ENDNO- Holds the number of the page that ends a document. AUTHOR- Holds the document author as found in the document properties of a file. DOCTYPE. Holds the type of document. Examples include: Word document, Excel 2003 spreadsheet, etc. The application that was used to create an original evidentiary file. An electronic document in its original format. The term native file is opposed to image file(s), which is one or more picture files of the pages of a native document pages generated by an imaging tool. An image file corresponding to a document as rendered in the application that created the document. Review conducted on images rendered by a viewer, rather than directly on native pages. Near native review offers the advantage of native review in potential cost savings and in added flexibility in marking pages and revising markup. Concordance Native Viewer provides near-native review. A process where you produce a copy of your images based on a current Concordance query, which can be renamed and renumbered to fit your needs. Productions are often run for internal case review and to provide opposing counsel with records in preparation for trial. The format of a table. Layout characteristics include: the selection of columns that are visible in the table, the sequence of appearance of columns from left to right, column width, row height, font colors, etc. A screen in Concordance that s used to view several database records in a tabular format, similar to a spreadsheet, displaying one line per record. In Concordance, a data field that you create for marking documents. Tagging can be used to help organize review work. For example, you can create a tag called Reviewed and then apply it to each document after you have reviewed it. Later, after the review is complete, you can easily find all your review notes by running a query for documents that are marked with the Reviewed tag.

TIFF An industry standard image file format. Other image file formats include: GIF, JPG, and PNG.
