Lesson Activity 1 Grade 11 work Pyramids The Great Pyramid of Giza It is the one and only Wonder which does not require a description by early historians and poets. It is the one and only Wonder that does not need speculations concerning its appearance, size, and shape. It is the oldest, yet it is the only surviving of the Seven Ancient Wonders. Defining the Pyramid A pyramid is a polyhedron with one face (known as the base ) a polygon and all the other faces triangles meeting at a common polygon vertex (known as the apex ). (A polyhedron is simply a three-dimensional solid which consists of a collection of polygons, usually joined at their edges) A right pyramid is a pyramid for which the line joining the centroid of the base and the apex is perpendicular to the base. Formulae that we will use: Volume of any regular pyramid = 1 base area height a) The triangular based pyramid: 1. The pyramid has 4 faces. There are three side faces which are triangles. Let us look at the nets for the pyramids: Page 96 For the triangular based pyramid we have three sides each with an area of 1 base height = 1 b s.

So for the three sides we will have 1 b s = bs. Then for the base we have one of two options: Area rule: 1 b sin = b = b 4 Or height is b ( b ) = 4 b = b and thus the area of the base = 1 b b = b 4. Thus the total surface area of the triangular based pyramid will be ( 1 b s ) + ( 1 b b ) = sb + b 4. That is equivalent to: Surface area of pyramid = Area of base + 1 (perimeter of base slant height). Activity 1 Draw a net of the square based pyramid with base length b and slant height s and use the net to show that the formula Surface area of pyramid = Area of base + 1 (perimeter of base slant height) holds true in this case. Solution Activity 1: b s There are four sides which are triangular with base length b and height s. So the area of the four will collectively be 4 1 base height = bs. The area of the base is b. So the total surface area of the square based pyramid will then be given by bs + b. Let s compare this with Area of base + 1 (perimeter of base slant height): Surface area of pyramid = Area of base + 1 (perimeter of base slant height) = b + 1 4bs s = b + bs. Example 1: h = 145,75 m 9 m In Egypt, the Great Pyramid of Giza is 145,75 m in height and has a square base of 9 m on a side. The triangular sides angle of 51,85 with the square base. Find the a) Total surface area and b) volume of the great pyramid Solution: a) Slant height is what we need to find first: s s = 145,75 + ( 9 145,75 ) = 185,5 Or alternatively: s = 145,75 9 = 185,4 sin 51,85 Surface area of pyramid = Area of base + 1 (perimeter of base slant height) = (9) + 1 (4 9 185,5) = 17 1, m b) Volume of the pyramid = 1 (Base Area) Height = 1 9 145,75 = 547 758,58 m Example Find the surface area and volume of this pyramid with a height of 10 cm and a square base with side 8 cm. A Solution Volume = 1 area of base height = 1 (64)(10) = 1, Surface area = area of base + 4 triangles Height of ABC is found by Pythagoras: B 10 8 cm 4 8 cm C h = 4 + 10 h = 116 h = 10,8 Area ABC = ( 1 ) (8)(10,8) = 4,1 Surface Area = (8)(8) + 4(4,1) = 6, cm Page 98

Example Find the a) volume and b) surface area if the side of the base hexagon is 1cm, and the height (H) of the pyramid is 10 cm. Solution a) V = 1 area of base 10 The base divides into 6 congruent s so area of base = 6 ( 1 ) (1)(1) sin = 74,1 cm Thus: Volume = 1.74,1 10 = 1 47 cm b) Surface area 1 1 1 = Area of 6 congruent s + area of hexagonal base H 1 10 Base: For the triangles: Area = 6 1 (1)(1) sin = (144) sin = 74,1 cm p = 6 + 144 = 180 p = 1,4 cm The height of each D in the base. p = 144 6 = 108 \ p = 10,9 1 1 1 P 1 1 6 6 The slant height which will give the height of each D in the sides. Now finally: 6 1 (1)(14,4) = 518,4 \ Total surface area = 74,1 + 518,4 Activity No 1, = 89,5 cm 14,4 1 Example 4 If it is given that the slant height of a pyramid is cm and the base length is 14 cm, find the surface area and the volume of each pyramid if a) The base is an equilateral triangle b) The base is a pentagon Solutions: a) Surface area of pyramid = Area of base + 1 (perimeter of base slant height) = 1 14 sin + 1 ( 14 ) = 49 + 46 = 546,87 cm For the volume we need the height from the base to the apex of the pyramid. 14 14 7 p 0 7 From the top view of the base we get: p = 7 tan 0 = 7 The height is then: h = ( 7 ) = 18,6 Volume of the pyramid = 1 (Base Area) Height = 1 ( 1 14 sin ) 18,6 = 519,41 m h 7 Page 100
