US President s first 100 days New makes an impact on global digital policy: - Privacy Shield: Trump s executive order on enhancing public safety limits privacy protection only to US citizens, and could invalidate Privacy Shield. European Commission: Privacy Shield will remain - Net neutrality: Newly appointed FCC chair expected to initiate a review of net neutrality rules. Commission now has Republican majority - New cybersecurity measures expected in the coming days 31 January 2017 6

IGF preparations kick off Stakeholders were invited to submit contributions on what worked last year, and what can be done to improve the overall IGF process this year IGF community wrapped up its 2016 inter-sessional work with the publication of the final outputs of the Policy Options for Connecting and Enabling the Next Billion(s) initiative, and of the four best practice forums (gender, IXPs, IPv6, and cybersecurity). Next IGF on 18 21 December can capitalise on uniqueness of host city Geneva the seat of many international and technical organisations covering more than 50% of international digital policy. 31 January 2017 7

Setting the scene for 2017 Context for digital policy developments in 2017: (a) Globalisation and growth of the Internet: crisis of globalisation will have unavoidable impact on the Internet, with restrictions and fragmentation (b) Jobs and employment: directly affected by the digital economy. The digital industry - often interpreted as leading to fewer available jobs - will increasingly come under pressure to contribute to solving the social costs of fast digital developments.
