What can I do in the settings menu of my WL-330 (which settings are there and what can I change)? Introduction The settings menu of your WL-330 allows you to customise the settings of this range extender. If you have a stable internet connection, we advise you not to change anything here. If you nevertheless decide to do so, prepare thoroughly: Please read this entire FAQ carefully so you know which settings you can change. Make a note of the current settings! Take screenshots, for example. That way you can always go back to the current situation if something should go wrong. You can also back up the current settings in a separate file, so you can restore them later if something goes wrong. For more information about this feature, see the section entitled Tools tab. If in doubt, always read the entire manual for the WL-330, which is on the accompanying CD- ROM. Applying changes in the GUI The WL-330 will reboot itself after changes are made in the settings menu. After a reboot you must often reconnect to the WL-330. For more information, see the section entitled Applying changes. Login You always log in through a browser. Home screen of the Settings menu Once you are logged in, you always start out on the screen shown below (Home). This is the first tab of the settings menu. You cannot make any changes here. This page provides an overview of the current settings. Here you can see which network the range extender is connected to and which channel it is transmitting on. Page 1
Basic Settings tab On the Basic Settings tab you manage all the settings for the current connection between your range extender and your modem (or modem router) or access point (if connected). Page 2
The MAIN ESSID field shows the current network name of your range extender. You can change this to whatever you like. The network name is the name showed in the network centre on your PC or laptop. The SSID Root AP shows the network to which the range extender is connected. We advise against changing this. In the Channel number field you can set the range extender to operate on another channel. This must, however, always be the same channel used by the router (or modem router) to which you are making a connection. Under Mode you can also configure the WL-330 as an access point. In that case the connection between the WL-330 and your router (or modem router) is not made wirelessly but rather via a network cable. In this mode the WL-330 will still broadcast a wireless signal to the receiving devices. The View active clients button starts a scan in which the range extender determines which devices with a wireless receiver are currently connected. Click this button for a list. When you click the Network scan button the range extender creates a list of all the wireless networks in the vicinity. You can establish a connection to a network directly from that list. Page 3
Advanced Settings tab Under Advanced Settings you will find extensive options for configuring the range extender in more detail. Only make changes here if you know what you are doing. On this tab you manage the more advanced settings, of which the security (on the Security sub-tab) is the most important. The Complete (all other advanced settings) and Radius server (configure your range extender as a Radius Server) sub-tabs are not discussed in this FAQ. Only change settings on this tab after you have read the complete documentation for your range extender. If in doubt, do not change any of these settings, especially not if you already have a correctly functioning network. Security Under the Security sub-tab you can manage the security standard of the wireless signal from your range extender. This must be the same security standard used on your router (or modem router) or access point. Sitecom always recommends making use of the WPA Pre-Shared Key standard. For the WPA Unicast Cipher Suite preferably choose WPA2(AES). The password you use to connect to your router (or modem router) or access point is shown by for shared Key. Do not change this, because otherwise the connection will be lost. The range extender must have the same password and security standard as you router (or modem router) or access point anyway. Page 4
Tools tab The Tools tab consists of four sub-tabs. On the System sub-tab you can do things such as setting a different password for logging in to the settings menu. By default, this is admin. The username (also admin) cannot be changed. After a new password is entered click the Apply button. On this page you can also manage the configuration of your DHCP Server. In almost all cases your router (or modem router) is also a DHCP server, which assigns IP addresses to the devices in your network. There can be no more than one active per network. We recommend that this always be turned off in the range extender. DHCP server This should preferably be left Off! This is necessary in order to establish a good connection. Because virtually all routers and access points now also have a DHCP table, and you can only have one active DHCP table in your network, Sitecom recommends always leaving this Off. Save sub-tab On this tab you can save the current settings to a file. This is useful if you are going to make changes. You can then always go back to the settings as they were before you made the changes. You do this by clicking the Browse button to navigate to the file and then clicking the Upload button. Page 5
The Reset button is used to reset the WL-330 to the factory settings. You will lose all your changes, so only do this if you really must. You can also reset the WL-330 with the reset button on the device itself. Press and hold it for about 15 to 20 seconds to do this. After a reset you must install the WL-330 again to correctly connect it to your network. Update sub-tab The Update sub-tab allows you to install new firmware for your range extender. Download the correct firmware from www.sitecom.com, and save it to your PC or laptop. Then connect it to the WL-330 with a network cable and select the file by clicking the Browse button. Then click Apply to perform the installation. Do not disconnect the cable until this whole process has been completed! Otherwise you run risk that the installation will be interrupted, and the WL-330 will no longer be usable. Reset sub-tab The Reset button is used to reset the WL-330 to the factory settings. You will lose all your changes, so only do this if you really must. We therefore recommend that you first save the settings. After a reset you must install the WL-330 again to correctly connect it to your network. Applying changes After you have changed settings and clicked Apply, in many cases the following screen will appear. On this screen you can press Continue if you want to change additional settings, or Apply if you want to apply the changes. After you have clicked Apply the following screen is shown. Page 6
Once the countdown is complete, click OK. In some cases (e.g. when changing your network name), you will have to reconnect the PC or laptop to the range extender to be able to connect to the internet again. This is necessary if you see the following screen. Page 7
