Introduction to Networks: Case Study, Option 2 Name: Name: Name: Academy username: Academy username: Academy username: Topology Diagram Assessment Objectives For an acceptable Case Study, the student must demonstrate end-to-end connectivity, and at least 50% of the following items: Identifying the correct cables. 10 points. Design the logical topology. 20 points. Configure the physical topology. 10 points. Configure the logical topology. 20 points. Configuring the intermediary devices. 20 points Verify network connectivity. 20 points. Scenario In this assessment students will create a small network that requires connecting network devices and configuring host computers, and a router and a switch for basic network connectivity. Common utility commands will be used to test and document the network. In order to pass the exam there should be end-to-end connectivity between PC1 and PC2. 1992 2013 Cisco Systems, Inc & Matti Puska. Page 1 of 7
Task 1: Identifying the Correct Cables Total points: 10 Write down in the table below the type and quantity of cables required to connect the devices shown in the above topology diagram. Hardware Qty Description Cisco Router 1 Part of CCNA Lab bundle. Cisco Switch 1 Part of CCNA Lab bundle. *Computer (host) 2 Lab computers. Table 1. Equipment and hardware. Gather the necessary equipment and cables. To configure the Case Study, make sure the equipment listed in Table 1 are available. Task 2: Design the Logical LAN Topology Subnet Number of Hosts 3 each Subnet A Subnet B No subnet calculators or other calculator may be used. All work must be shown on the reverse of this Final. Specification Number of bits in the prefix Subnet A Student Input 2 each IP mask (dotted decimal) Number of usable hosts per subnet First IP Host address Last IP Host address Specification Number of bits in the prefix Subnet B Student Input 2 each IP mask (dotted decimal) Number of usable hosts per subnet First IP Host address Last IP Host address PC1 will use the first IP address in the subnet, and PC2 will use the last IP address in its subnet. Write down the IP address information for each device: Device IP address Mask Gateway 1 each Host2 Before proceeding, you may verify your IP addresses with the instructor. Task 3: Configure the Physical Topology Total points: 10 Step 1: Physically connect lab devices. Figure 1. Cabling the network. Cable the network devices as shown in Figure 1. If not already enabled, turn power on to all devices. Step 2. Visually inspect network connections After cabling the network devices, take a moment to verify the connections. Task 4: Configure the Logical Topology Step 1: Configure host computers. After configuring each host computer, record the host network settings below. Physical Address Network Configuration 4 each IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway Physical Address Host2 Network Configuration 4 each IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway All contents are Copyright 1992 2007 Cisco Systems, Inc. Task 5: Configure Intermediary Devices Step 1: Configure the switch Ensure, that the switch has no previous configurations. Erase the startup configuration and reload the device, if necessary. Configure the following parameters to the switch: - hostname: RightSwitch - enable password: cisco - console password: cisco - Telnet password: cisco - IP address for VLAN1: any unused IP address from subnet B - Default gateway: the IP address of fa 0/1 interface of the router Step 2: Configure the router Ensure, that the switch has no previous configurations. Erase the startup configuration and reload the device, if necessary. Configure the following parameters to the switch: - hostname: CsRouter - enable password: cisco - console password: cisco - Telnet password: cisco - IP addresses: addesses for the active interfaces according to your address plan Step 3: Verifying addresses After configuring the addresses, verify the interface status and IP address allocation. Task 6: Verify Network Connectivity Step 1: Use the ping command to verify network connectivity. Network connectivity can be verified with the ping command. **NOTE: If pings to host computers fail, temporarily disable the computer firewall and retest. To disable a Windows firewall, select Start Control Panel Windows Firewall, select OFF, and OK. Use the following table to methodically verify connectivity with each network device. Take corrective action to establish connectivity if a test fails: From To IP Address Ping results NIC IP address Router1, Fa0/0 Router1, Fa0/1 Host2 5 each Step 2: Use the traceroute command to trace the packet path. IP packet path can be traced with the traceroute command. Check the routing hops from PC1 to PC2. Task 7: Cleanup NOTE: DO NOT PROCEED WITH CLEANUP UNTIL YOUR INSTRUCTOR HAS GRADED YOUR SKILLS BASED FINAL AND HAS INFORMED YOU THAT YOU MAY BEGIN CLEANUP. Unless directed otherwise by the instructor, restore host computer network connectivity, then turn off power to the host computers. Disconnect and neatly put away all LAN cables that were used in the Final. Remove anything that was brought into the lab, and leave the room ready for the next class.
