MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Greetings, It is a pleasure to present MIRARCO s Strategic Plan for 2015-2018. The corporation has had an eventful 16 year history. It has accomplished many innovations, produced many highly qualified persons (HQP s) and has provided leadership to the mining research community. This strategic plan points the way forward for the organisation. Given the uncertainties of the mining cycle, we chose a three-year horizon rather than a five or ten year outlook. Dependent on market conditions, opportunities and MIRARCO s talented managers and staff, we will achieve the goals we set and much more. On behalf of the Board of Directors of MIRARCO Mining Innovation, I am proud to present our three-year Strategic Plan. The management at MIRARCO has accomplished much; in particular they survived the mining industry s downturn in the recent past. I know the future is always uncertain, but with the passion, expertise and talent that staff and management at MIRARCO bring to the table, they will accomplish the goals set in this Strategic Plan. Marc Boudreau, President and CEO, BESTECH Chairman of the Board, MIRARCO Mining Innovation I would appreciate your thoughts and support as we go forward. Our website at www.mirarco.org will provide up-to-date information on our progress and achievements. Vic Pakalnis, P.Eng., MBA, M.Eng. STRATEGIC PRIORITIES FOR MINING SAFETY RESEARCH (MSR) STRATEGIC PRIORITIES FOR GEO MECHANICS RESEARCH CENTRE (GRC) MSR WILL... GRC WILL... MSR aims to be the hub of a global network of mining safety research. It will host the 36th International Conference of Safety in Mine Research Institutes in 2015. Expand research, development and services in Occupational Health and Safety. Establish a long-term collaborative agreement with JK Tech, Queensland University, Camborne School of Mines, and the University of Exeter to deliver G-MIRM courses and services in North America. Support Ministry of Labour initiatives in the area of technology and the management of change. Continue to develop its expertise in the field of diesel emission reduction. Develop a world-class geomechanics research capacity in ultra-deep mining. Develop its rock burst support tools and technologies for mining in high stress conditions. Undertake a multi-year hydraulic pre-conditioning of highly stressed mining blocks project. Expand its contracts service for industry within its areas of expertise, specifically: stress measurement, ground characterization, numerical modelling and laboratory and field testing. Continue to attract international students and develop a strategy for international collaborative research. Develop the Sudbury-GRC In-Situ Stress Measurement Device and supporting methodologies and will promote these globally. Continue to affect knowledge transfer through short courses, workshops, publications and conference presentations. 12 MIRARCO // STRATEGIC PLAN MIRARCO // STRATEGIC PLAN 13
