Project Baseline Uploading Data to the Project Baseline Database 2015

Terms to Know Database: a relational database management system that hosts data (your underwater observations) Public Interface: allows all users to view and query (access) the data stored in the database. Link to the Project Baseline public interface: http://projectbaseline.org/database/ This interface can also be accessed from the home page of projectbaseline.org Upload Interface (not yet available): allows users (Project Baseline administrators and volunteers) to upload, or add, data to our database Public Interface Database Upload Interface

Upload Interface The upload interface is not yet available Upload Interface For instructions detailing how to upload data to the Project Baseline database, please continue to the next slide.

Data Uploads Overview Volunteer Project manager submits observations via email or file transfer service Please email all observations to vanessa@gue.com If files exceed sizes reasonable to email, please use a file transfer service such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or Wetransfer Program manager (vanessa@gue.com) reviews observations Database manager reviews observations and enters data into the database Data successfully hosted in the Database

Who can Upload Data? Any designated team volunteer can collect Station-level data Any member of the public can collect Station-level data All data must be submitted to a team volunteer Project manager Project managers are responsible for managing all incoming Station-level observations and ensuring data being submitted to the database are in line with team and Project Baseline quality standards At this time, only Project managers or designated Site managers submit data to the Project manager (vanessa@gue.com) Data collected at Stations Team Project manager organizes all incoming data Project manager delivers data to the Program manager on a regular basis Data successfully added to the database by our database mgr. on behalf of team

Uploading Data - Details When submitting one or more images per Station Ensure each image is no more than 5MB Each image is saved as a.jpg Each image is accompanied by the following information Name of photographer (First and Last) Date image was taken (use long form format) Example February, 25, 2015 Time image was taken (if available) Use 24 hour clock Project Name Station Name If size of image(s) is reasonable, email to vanessa@gue.com If size of image(s) is very large, coordinate file transfer through a services such as Google Drive, Flickr, Dropbox, Wetransfer, etc Inform vanessa@gue.com of your preferred file transfer service

Uploading Data - Details Currently, our public interface displays the following numeric data as a graph Water Temperature Visibility Estimate Water Depth

Uploading Data - Details We accept numeric data without accompanying images If there are a small number of numeric observations to relay, email vanessa@gue.com and include the following information: Name of person responsible for collecting the readings (first and last) Specify units (meters or feet are acceptable) Specify the method used to collect data For example To obtain a depth or water temperature reading, did the diver use a gauge worn on diver? Or a gauge installed at the Station? For the visibility reading, did the diver reference a sechhi disk? Use cave line or a measuring tape? Or, did the diver take a best guess at estimating visibility? Were any other instruments (or meters) used to gather any data? Specify Date of Observation ((use long form format) Example February, 25, 2015 Specify Time of Observation (Use 24 hour clock) If there are a large number of numeric observations to relay, please organize into a spreadsheet and email vanessa@gue.com, or share a spreadsheet hosted online using a service such as Google Drive or Dropbox

Results Data sent to vanessa@gue.com is typically available for viewing within 7 days To view Project data, visit www.projectbaseline.org/database Share your underwater world with your community! Map View - Sites Map View - Stations Data Plot View - Stations
