Chapter 1 Getting Started This chapter will walk you through the installation of your Serial ATA PCI Card. Make sure that you have the following items:! One SATARaid PCI Controller Card! Two Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive cable! Two Combo Hard Drive Kit! Two SATA Converter board! Driver Disc! This User Guide Addonics Technologies Combo RAID System Users Guide v 1.0 3

Chapter 2 Hardware Installation The SATARaid Controller fits into any available 32-bit PCI slot (Must be PCI 2.2 or 2.3 compliant). It also fits the 32-bit portion of a 64-bit PCI slot, on the system s motherboard (See figure below) 1. Remove the cover of your system. 2. Remove the inside slot cover of an available 32-bit PCI Slot On the motherboard. 3. Install the SATARaid Controller card into the open slot. 4. Secure the bracket to the system s frame. 5. Fasten the controller card bracket to the system case. 6.Cover the system s case. Addonics Technologies Combo RAID System Users Guide v 1.0 4

The Addonics SATARaid PCI Controller Card supports up to TWO Serial ATA hard drives. 1. Install all of the hard drives into the hard drive bays of your system, including their power cables. 2. Attach one Serial ATA data cable to each hard drive. Then attach the Other ends of the cable to one of the Serial ATA ports on the SATARaid controller card. All of the connectors are keyed so they will only attach one way. NOTE: The Addonics SATARaid PCI Controller card is a Plug and Play (PnP) device. No changes are necessary in the Motherboard CMOS setup for resources or drive types in most applications. Addonics Technologies Combo RAID System Users Guide v 1.0 5

Chapter 3 Stripe (RAID 0) Maximizes performance and capacity through a process called striping. High performance arrays write portions of a single file across multiple drives. There is no fault tolerance. RAID Level 0 requires a minimum of 2 drives to implement Characteristics/Advantages RAID 0 implements a striped disk array, the data is broken down into blocks and each block is written to a separate disk drive I/O performance is greatly improved by spreading the I/O load across many channels and drives No parity calculation overhead is involved Very simple design Easy to implement Recommended Applications Video Production and Editing Image Editing Pre-Press Applications Any application requiring high bandwidth How to create a Striped/RAID 0 Set 1. Turn on the Computer. 2. From the Serial ATA Screen press F4 to enter the SATA Configuration Utility. 3. Select Create Raid Set then press enter. 4. Choose Striped For Raid 0. 5. Choose Auto Configuration to automatically create a Striped (Raid 0) Set. 6. Type Y to continue. 7. Striped (Raid 0) is now complete. 8. Press CTRL+E to exit. Note: You need to Partition and Format the newly created striped set to Access it. Addonics Technologies Combo RAID System Users Guide v 1.0 12

Mirror (RAID 1): Duplicates or mirrors the data on both drives. No data will be Lost if one of the drives fails. RAID Level 1 requires a minimum of 2 drives to implement Characteristics/Advantages One Write or two reads possible per mirrored pair Twice the Read transaction rate of single disks, same Write transaction rate as single disks Transfer rate per block is equal to that of a single disk Simplest RAID storage subsystem design Recommended Applications Accounting Payroll Financial Any application requiring very high availability How to create a Mirrored/RAID 1 Set 1. Turn on the Computer. 2. From the Serial ATA Screen press F4 to enter the SATA Configuration Utility. 3. Select Create Raid Set then press enter. 4. Choose Mirrored for Raid 1. 5. Choose Auto Configuration to automatically create a Mirrored (Raid 1) Set. 6. Type Y to continue. 7. Mirrored (Raid 1) is now complete. 8. Press CTRL+E to exit. Chapter 5: Troubleshooting Frequently Asked Questions This section lists frequently asked questions involving pre installation. Drive Issues, installation, and post installation. Q. Why does FDISK report a much lower drive capacity if a single drive exceeds 64GB? A. The version of FDISK.EXE that is included with Windows 98 and ME does not correctly report the capacity of drives that exceed 64GB. This is a cosmetic, not actual, limitation. Microsoft has an updated version of FDISK.EXE that corrects this problem. Go to http://support.microsoft.com for an updated version of FDISK.EXE and more information. Q. While booting Windows NT4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP during a floppy less install, why does the message Inaccessible Boot Device appear? A. You did not press the F6 key at the appropriate time. Reboot the system, and press the F6 key when the message Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration appears in Windows NT4 or the message Press F6 if you need to install third party SCSI or RAID driver appears in Windows 2000 and XP. Q. While booting Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP during a CD ROM disk install, why does the message No Hard Drives Found appear? A. You did not press the F6 key at the appropriate time. Reboot the system, and press the F6 key when the message Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration appears or the message Press F6 if you need to install third party SCSI or RAID driver appears in Windows 2000 and XP. Q. The Addonics SATARaid BIOS not appearing during boot. The SATARaid driver does not load. Data transfer rates are too slow. How can you resolve these problems? A. Move the Addonics SATARaid Controller card to a different PCI slot. Q. Can you build a RAID with the Addonics SATARaid Controllers? A. Yes. The Addonics SATARaid is a RAID 0/1 controller.
