1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Assumptins This guide has been written fr use by technically cmpetent persnnel with a gd understanding f the cmmunicatins technlgies used in the prduct and f the requirements fr their specific applicatin. It als assumes a basic ability t access and navigate a Digi Cnnect Wi-SP and cnfigure it. This applicatin nte applies nly t: Mdel: Digi Cnnect Wi-SP 1.2 Crrectins Requests fr crrectins r amendments t this applicatin nte are welcme and shuld be addressed t: tech.supprt@digi.cm Requests fr new applicatin ntes can be sent t the same address. 2 QUICK FACTS 2.1 Cmmn Questins Abut the Cnnect Wi-SP Q: What are the default username and passwrd fr the Cnnect Wi-SP? Username: rt Passwrd: dbps Q: What wireless standards des the Cnnect Wi-SP supprt? It is an 802.11 b device. Operates at 2.4 GHz nly. Has a maximum thrughput f 11 Mbps. Q: What authenticatin methds des the Cnnect Wi-SP supprt? Open, sharedkey, wep_authenticatin, wpa_psk, wpa2_psk, wpa_auth, leap, and eap-fast Q: What encryptin methds are supprted by the Cnnect Wi-SP? Open, WEP, TKIP and CCMP Q: D I have t use the serial prt t cnfigure the device initially? Yes. It is nt pssible t use the Digi Device Discvery utility t lcate the Cnnect Wi-Sp until it has been cnnected t a Wi-Fi netwrk. Page 3
3 NECESSARY EQUIPMENT FOR CONFIGURATION A laptp with a DB9 serial prt A crssver DB9-t-DB9 serial cable A terminal prgram with COM prt access, such as PuTTY. PuTTY can be dwnladed frm http://www.putty.rg/ at the time f this writing. 4 INITIAL CONNECT WI-SP CONFIGURATION 4.1 Setting the Serial Prt fr Cmmand Line Interface (CLI) Mde This sectin will cver the steps needed t initially cnfigure the Cnnect Wi-SP via the CLI using the equipment described in the previus sectin: 1. Set the Digi Cnnect Wi-SP DIP switches in the On r up psitin. The figure belw shws the DIP Switch settings fr Cmmand Line access fr the Digi Cnnect Wi-SP. It is recmmended t rebt the device after changing the DIP switch settings. 2. Next, a terminal sessin will need t be pened up at 9600 baud, 8,n,1 with n flw cntrl. The device will prmpt fr a lgin int the Cnnect Wi-SP. Lg in with the default username and passwrd f rt/dbps. T view the ptins that are available t set at this time, type set wlan? at the CLI, as shwn in the screensht belw: Page 4
3. The next step is t pick the Wi-Fi netwrk parameters that will be needed t cnnect t the Access Pint. Fr this example, the Cnnect Wi-SP will be using WPA2 authenticatin and AES encryptin. The fllwing cmmand will cnfigure these parameters: set wlan authenticatin=wpa_psk encryptin=ccmp ssid=ssid_f_ap psk=pre_shared_key NOTE: Sme Access Pints require bth CCMP and TKIP t be enabled simultaneusly fr cnnectivity when using AES encryptin. It is pssible t enable bth simultaneusly n the Cnnect Wi-SP if this is needed. Once the abve cmmand has been issued, the status f the Wi-Fi cnnectin can be btained with the cmmand display wlan. The fllwing screensht shws a Wi-SP that is nt successfully cnnecting t the Wi-Fi netwrk: The fllwing screensht shws a Wi-SP that is successfully cnnecting t the Wi-Fi netwrk: NOTE: Yu can nw use the Digi WebUI t cmplete the device cnfiguratin at this time. The Digi Device Discvery Tl can be used t lcate the Wi-SP via Wi-Fi. Page 5
5 TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS This sectin will prvide additinal trubleshting tips t help when installing the Cnnect Wi-SP: Cnnectivity Issues What distance shuld the Wi-SP be frm the Access Pint during initial cnfiguratin? When cnfiguring the Digi Cnnect Wi-SP make sure it is 3 feet frm the Access Pint it will need t eventually cnnect t. This can prevent issues where nisy envirnments can make it difficult fr the Wi-SP t lcate the Access Pint initially. Can the Wi-SP be discvered by the Digi Device Discvery Tl befre cnnecting t an Access Pint? It is nt pssible t use the Digi Device Discvery utility until the Wi-SP has been cnnected t the Wi-Fi netwrk. When I type display wlan, I see the state f scanning. Why is this? This means that the Wi-Fi settings defined n the Wi-SP likely d nt match the settings f the Wi-Fi netwrk, and the Wi-SP is scanning fr a netwrk it can attach t. Cmmn items t check in this situatin are: SSID, channel, encryptin & authenticatin types, r the passphase/ passwrd fr the Wi-Fi netwrk, making sure these all line up with the Access Pint. Page 6
Everything has been checked but the Wi-Sp will still nt cnnect t the Wi-Fi netwrk. What next? Digi Supprt will need t see the utput f the cmmand set wlan t help determine the issue. It is als best t capture a Wi-Fi trace frm the Wi-SP. T take a trace, enter the CLI f the Wi-SP using the serial prt (same prcess as the initial cnfiguratin), and issue the cmmand: set trace state=n mask=wlan:*,wpa:* Use Ctrl-C t stp the trace and send this trace t Digi Supprt fr further assistance. What ptin n the Wi-SP shuld be used fr WPA vs. WPA2? The Digi Cnnect Wi- SP uses the wpa_psk ptins fr bth WPA and WPA2. What ptins are used fr AES Encryptin? When using AES encryptin, the wpa_psk ptin is used fr authenticatin, and CCMP and/r TKIP are used fr the encryptin methd. Nte that sme access pints will require bth CCMP and TKIP t be enabled n the Wi-SP fr cnnectivity. General Trubleshting Issues Has the latest firmware been installed? Ensure that the latest firmware has been installed n the Wi-SP. The latest firmware typically has fixes t the device that may crrect the issue being seen. The latest firmware can be dwnladed frm the http://www.digi.cm/. What d the LEDs mean n the Wi-SP? RED LED - indicates that the unit has pwer and will be slid red. GREEN LED - is the netwrk status. It is slid green when the unit is assciated with the wi-fi netwrk. If it is blinking quickly the device is scanning fr a netwrk. YELLOW LED - indicates netwrk activity. On slid the device did initialize. Off indicates device is ready. Blinking indicates netwrk activity. The serial prt is nt cnnecting t the end equipment. What next? Ensure that the serial prt has been switched back int a usable mde after the initial cnfiguratin thrugh the serial prt. The DIP switches will need t be set fr RS232, RS422 r RS485 mde fr prper peratin. Make sure t pwer cycle the Wi-SP after changing the DIP switch settings. Where is the Digi Device Discvery Tl lcated? The tl can be fund n the Digi Supprt website here. Page 7
