The following changes to the MARC 21 format for bibliographic data have now been implemented in OLIS. This brings the OLIS MARC tables up to date with Update No. 2 of the MARC 21 format for bibliographic data. Note that obsolete data elements (fields, subfields, codes etc.) have not been removed from the MARC tables which lie behind GeoCat and Advance, but have been clearly marked as "OBSOLETE". This means that the GeoCat MARC Check will not identify such data as incorrect. This is to prevent the necessity of updating records which were correct at the time they were added to OLIS in order to save them back to OLIS with the addition of holdings only. Having said that, it is the responsibility of all cataloguers to check that any new records added to OLIS from now on contain only currently valid data elements, and obsolete data in older records should be corrected when identified, if at all possible. This will ensure that we export only good quality MARC records to CURL and OCLC. Any parts of the OLIS Cataloguing Updates (New Series) which are affected by these changes will be updated to reflect the changes in due course. Leader Leader/07 (Bibliographic level): code "i" (Integrating resource) Leader/08 (Type of control): code "a" (Archival control) Leader/09 (Character coding scheme): codes "#" (MARC-8) and "a" (UCS/Unicode) Leader/17 (Encoding level): code "3" (Abbreviated) has been defined. The above changes are those which you are most likely to come across in day-to-day cataloguing. More details can be found in the GeoCat MARC Help for the appropriate field, subfield, etc. or in the full MARC 21 format for bibliographic data on Cataloger's Desktop. In addition to these changes to the MARC 21 bibliographic format, a number of changes have been made to the list of language codes which lies behind 008/35-37 (Language) for all formats. Where codes have been made obsolete, these are identified by the flag "(OBSOLETE)" beside the description in the table behind 008/35-37. The valid code will be found immediately underneath the obsolete code in the table. The changes bring this table in line with the MARC Code list for languages (2000 ed.), which can be found on Cataloger's Desktop. Some notable changes are as follows: Bosnian = bos (previously scr) Irish = gle (previously iri) Irish, Middle (ca. 1100-1550) = mga (previously cel) Irish, Old (to 1100) = sga (previously cel) Esperanto = epo (previously esp) Scottish Gaelic = gla (previously gae) Sinhalese = sin (previously snh) A couple of additions and changes have also been made to the list of country codes which lies behind 008/15-17 (Place of publication, production, or execution) for all formats. Where codes have been deleted, these are identified by the flag "(OBSOLETE)" beside the description in the table behind 008/15-17. The changes bring this table in line with the MARC Code list for countries (2000 ed.): East Timor = em has been ADDED Nunavut = nuc has been ADDED Hong Kong = hk has been DELETED (use cc for China) Macao = mh has been DELETED (use cc for China) If you have any questions about any of these changes, please contact the GeoCat Helpline on (2)77138 or email Catalogue Support Services at css@ouls.ox.ac.uk.
