W ORKSHEET M AKER Introduction With Worksheet Maker, you are able to: print a variety of creative worksheets create your own sentences and keywords import text fi les from word processors like Writing Assessment and Book Maker Worksheet Maker is easy to use. The Worksheet Maker Editor allows you to easily modify sentences and change keywords, giving you great fl exibility in creating your own materials. You may have more than one document open at a time, allowing you to edit fi les and move data from one fi le to another. You may also customize worksheet instructions to meet your personal requirements. Once you have entered your text, you can quickly create a series of 15 different worksheet styles: Alphabetizing Big Keywords Contractions Crossword Puzzle Fill in the Blank Mix and Match Multiple Choice Recognizing Sounds Review Sheet Scrambled Sentences Scrambled Words Secret Code Synonym/Antonym Using New Words Word Search 4

Place the Orchard Language Arts Installer CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. Double-click on the desktop CD icon labeled Orchard (if the title window for the CD does not automatically open). 3. Double-click the icon labeled Orchard Language Arts Installer. 4. Enter your school name and install code. (See your installation certifi cate.) 5. Click OK to continue. 6. Select an appropriate Install Location (either a hard drive or network drive) in the bottom left corner on the Orchard Installer screen. 7. Click Install to continue installing the selected list of Skill Trees. 8. Click OK when the installation is complete. System Requirements Installing From a CD All Skill Trees are copied to the Orchard folder. If the folder does not already exist, it is automatically created. Windows 95/98, Windows 3.1 1. Place the Orchard Language Arts Installer CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. Click the Start menu button on the taskbar and select Run (Windows 95/98), or select Run from the File menu in the Progam Manager (Windows 3.1). 3. Type D:\install.exe in the Open box, or use the Browse button to locate the install.exe fi le on Drive D. 4. Click OK to start the install program. 5. Click Next to continue to the Orchard Registration screen. 6. Enter your school name and install code, and click Next. (See your installation certifi cate.) 7. Click OK to install the selected Skill Trees. 8. Click Next to accept the default path C:\Orchard as the destination directory. 9. Click Next to begin the actual installation. 10.Click Close when the installation is complete. 5

W ORKSHEET M AKER Installing From Disks Macintosh Insert the Orchard Manager disk into your disk drive. Double-click the Manager Installer icon. Continue to follow the instructions on the screen to install the management system to an Orchard Folder on the drive you selected. After installing the manager, you must install each individual Skill Tree you purchased. Insert the fi rst program disk. Double-click the Installer icon to copy all the necessary Skill Tree fi les to the same Orchard folder. Repeat for each additional Skill Tree. Windows 95/98, Windows 3.1 Insert the Orchard Manager disk into your disk drive. Select Run from the File menu in the Program Manager (Windows 3.1x) or from the Start menu button on the taskbar (Windows 95/98). Type A:\SETUP in the Open box (Windows 95/98). Continue to follow the instructions on the screen to install the management system to the Orchard destination directory you selected. After installing the manager, you must install each individual Skill Tree you purchased in the same Orchard destination directory. Insert the fi rst program disk. Type A:\SETUP using the process used before for the manager. Repeat for each additional Skill Tree. Installing a Network Version 1. Login as the Network Administrator or Network Supervisor at either a workstation or on the fi le server. 2. Follow one of the installation procedures previously described and select the appropriate network drive as the destination location for the programs instead of the hard drive when prompted by the install program. 3. Set the properties or privileges on the Orchard program folder or directory path so the program fi les have Read, Write, Create, and Delete access rights. 4. If your server drive is not mapped on your workstations, map the drive, the Orchard folder, or the folder in which Orchard is residing. 5. Create a program icon or shortcut icon on each workstation. 6. CAUTION! Do not attempt to modify the database while students are using the Orchard Skill Trees. 6

Getting Started Double-click the Orchard icon. At the Orchard sign-on screen, enter as a teacher. The type teacher for the login name. The default password is teacher. Select Worksheet Maker in the Teacher Tools menu. 7

W ORKSHEET M AKER Using Worksheet Maker Open a New Worksheet To open a new worksheet, click the New button. Pull down the Worksheet Type menu, and select a worksheet type. Fifteen worksheet formats are available. Choose a worksheet format. Open a Saved Worksheet To open a previously saved worksheet, click the Open button. Set Worksheet Preferences To set Worksheet Preferences, follow these instructions: 1. Under the Options menu, select Worksheet Preferences... (Windows) or Printing Options... (Macintosh) to set your personal preferences for each worksheet format. 2. Click on the appropriate tabs to select a worksheet. Set your preferences. 3. Enter your worksheet instructions in the text entry box. 4. Close the Preferences window by clicking the OK button. The selections made will remain as default settings until they are changed. You may do this by clicking the Restore Defaults button. Keywords Enter the following sentence into the Editor: Computers are our friends. Follow these instructions: 1. Place the cursor in the word our. Pull down the Edit menu and choose Make Keyword. Notice that the keyword our is now red. 2. Change the keyword to Computers by highlighting it or by clicking the cursor in the word. Choose Make Keyword from the Edit menu. The new keyword appears in the Keyword window. 3. Press Enter/Return to enter the sentence. The Editor is now empty and you can enter a second sentence. To edit or delete a sentence and its keyword, bring a keyword and its related sentence into the Editor by clicking on the desired keyword in the Keyword List. 8

To import text, you must select text that was saved as Text Only. A period, question mark, or exclamation point is used to determine the end of a sentence. Import Text 1. Under the File menu, select Import (Windows)/Open (Macintosh). 2. You will be asked if you want to save your current worksheet. Click Yes to save the fi le and proceed. 3. Select Text File (Windows only). 4. Select the fi le to import from the Open window and click the Open button. Your text fi le appears in the Worksheet Maker window. The longest word in each sentence has been selected as the keyword. Keywords may be changed. To import a picture, follow these instructions: Import a Picture 1. Under the Options (Windows)/Worksheet (Macintosh) menu, select Worksheet Picture (Windows)/Select Picture (Macintosh). 2. Select the picture location: left, center or right. 3. Click the Load (Windows)/Import (Macintosh) button. 4. Select the picture fi le from the Open window and click on the picture you wish to select. For Windows, this must be a Bitmap fi le, which is identifi ed by a.bmp extension. For Macintosh, this must be a PICT fi le. Click Open. 5. When the picture appears, click OK. 6. Press the Preview button to see the location. If you want to change it, click Close to close the preview window, and select Worksheet Picture (Windows)/Select Picture (Macintosh) again. 7. Close the Preview window. Click the Print button and the print dialog box appears. Specify your printer, the print range, and the number of copies you wish to print. Click the OK button. Print a Worksheet To save your worksheet, click the Save button. Name the fi le and click Save. Save a Worksheet Make sure you have saved your worksheet, then select Exit/Quit from the File menu. Quit the Program 9

W ORKSHEET M AKER Worksheet Formats and Printing Preferences The following pages provide samples of fi fteen worksheet formats and the various printing options available for each format. Within these printing options you may select the answer keys for the following worksheets: Alphabetizing Mix and Match Scrambled Words Big Keywords Multiple Choice Secret Code Contractions Recognizing Sounds Synonym/Antonym Crossword Puzzle Review Sheet Using New Words Fill in the Blank Scrambled Sentences Word Search The instruction box for customized information is available for all worksheets. Select Printing Options from the Worksheet menu, then type any customized directions in the instruction box. Alphabetizing Alphabetizing formats a list of keywords in random alphabetical order. with a Writing Area causes keywords to randomly appear in a cluster on the left side of the page with a writing area for alphabetizing on the right. Number of words to alphabetize: allows you to choose if all of the words must be alphabetized as a group, or if several groups of the selected size must be alphabetized....in groups of keywords per question (Macintosh only): allows you to select the number of items in an alphabetical cluster that students are asked to alphabetize. 10...having students mark one correct answer (Macintosh only): causes words to be printed next to a selection box. In this case, students may darken the circle beside the item in each cluster that comes fi rst alphabetically. If you choose order the items by correctness, an area is printed so that students can rewrite each cluster of items in alphabetical order.

Big Keywords formats a list of keywords in your choice of three sizes. The exact size of the letters will vary depending on the size you choose in Printing Preferences. Big Keywords in Random Order prints keywords in a random sequence. Big Keywords Size: sizes keywords. Select from 1/16," 1/3," 1/3," and 1" tall. Contractions presents a set of words at the top that prompts students to supply an alternative word form, such as a contraction. In the case of contractions, a prompt word such as "cannot" will be different from a keyword such as "can't," which represents the correct answer. You can use your prompt words in order to test for knowledge of contractions or other specifi c features of writing. Contractions in Random Order prints keywords in a random sequence. include Answer Selection Box displays associated words at the top of the worksheet with a direction that says Select your answers from the following words. 11

W ORKSHEET M AKER Crossword Puzzle Crossword Puzzle prints out a crossword puzzle using sentences with missing keywords as clues. with Keywords provides a list of keywords. Students may choose answers from the list. with an Answer Key prints a separate answer sheet when the worksheet is printed. Minimized (Windows only) will generate the smallest puzzle possible. Please note: using this option will greatly increase the time that it takes to create the puzzle. with Clues Starting on First Page, if possible (Windows only) will begin printing the Clues on the fi rst page provided that there is enough room. If this option is used in conjunction with a small printer font and/or the Minimized option, it is possible to fi t the Puzzle and Clues on the same page....in random order (Macintosh only) prints keywords in a random sequence. Be sure the Random Order and the With Keywords options are both checked. Note: Worksheet Maker may take a while to create a puzzle depending on the number of words you are using, the font size you have chosen, and your computer s processing speed. Worksheet Maker may not be able to create a puzzle if the printer font is too large, there are too many words in the puzzle, or there is a word that does not share a common letter with other words. Note: For Macintosh users, be sure to save your file as a PICT in order to preserve a particular puzzle layout. 12

Fill in the Blank formats the original sentences with blank spaces in place of the missing keywords. Students place keywords in the blanks. Fill in the Blank in Random Order prints the sentences in a varying sequence. with Keywords provides a list of keywords at the bottom of the worksheet. with an Answer Key provides a correction key. with Keyword (Windows only) selects how the missing keyword will appear within the sample sentence. You can choose either a solid line, or letter dashes. Mix & Match formats sentences with a blank space in place of a missing keyword. A list of keywords is provided. Students select the keyword that best completes a sentence and fi ll in the blank with the letter that corresponds to the word. Mix and Match in Random Order prints the sentences in a random sequence. with Answer Key provides a correction key. 13

W ORKSHEET M AKER Multiple Choice Multiple Choice formats sentences with a blank space in place of a missing keyword. Choices for the missing word are given. Students select the word that best completes the sentence and fi ll in the blank with the letter that corresponds to the word. in Random Order prints the sentences in a random sequence. with Answer Key provides a correction key. Number of Distractors for each item (Windows only) allows you to select the number of distractors in each multiple choice item....in groups of keywords per question (Macintosh only) allows you to select the number of distractors in each multiple choice item. Recognizing Sounds Recognizing Sounds provides a fl exible worksheet format that is well suited to sound-based tests and activities. For example, a teacher may want to use sound for testing students' ability to follow directions, interpret a sound, or identify and produce words with long vowel sounds. You must provide the sounds and create or import your sentences and keywords in Worksheet Maker. in Random Order scrambles the order of the items. 14 with a Writing area adds lines for student responses.

Review Sheet formats the keywords and includes lines for students to write their own sentences. Review Sheet in Random Order prints the words in a varying sequence. with Sample Sentences (Windows)/...with sentences (Macintosh) prints the original sentences with keywords printed in boldface type. Scrambled Sentences prints sentences in which the words are scrambled in a random order. Students write the correct word sequence on the lines provided. Scrambled Sentences in Random Order prints the sentences in a random order. with all Lowercase Letters (Windows only) prints all letters in the scrambled sentence in lower case so that the fi rst word in the sentence is not obvious. with no Punctuation Marks (Windows only) removes all punctuation from the scrambled sentence sot that the last word in the sentence is not obvious. with Answer Key option prints a separate answer sheet when the worksheet is printed. 15

W ORKSHEET M AKER Scrambled Words Scrambled Words formats each sentence with blank spaces in place of the missing keyword letters. The scrambled keyword appears below the sentence. in Random Order prints the sentences in a varying sequence. with Keywords prints a list of unscrambled keywords at the bottom of the worksheet. with an Answer Key provides a correction key. Secret Code Secret Code formats each original sentence with blank spaces in place of the missing keyword letters. The keyword appears in code below the sentence. in Random Order prints sentences in a varying sequence. with Keywords provides a list of keywords at the bottom of the worksheet. 16 with an Answer Key provides a key of decoding keywords. Students match each letter of a coded word with the letters in the bottom row of the code key. The corresponding letters on the top row of the key will decode the word. The Secret Code key at the bottom of the page will always be printed in a standard size, regardless of the font size that you choose.

Synonym/Antonym presents a set of words at the top of the worksheet and prompts students to supply a synonym or antonym. Note that the prompt words are different from the keywords that represent the correct answers. You can use your prompt words as an exercise to test for knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, or other concepts. Synonym/ Antonym in Random Order prints keywords in a random sequence. with Answer Selection Box at the Top displays associated words at the top of the worksheet with directions that say Select your answers from the following words. Using New Words formats keywords at the top of the worksheet. The sentences appear below with blanks where students are to select and write the appropriate keyword. Using New Words in Random Order scrambles the order of the keywords at the top of the page as well as the order of the sentences beneath. with an Answer Key provides a correction key. with Keyword as (Windows only) allows you to print the missing keywords as one solid line, or letter dashes that indicate the number of letters in the missing word. 17

W ORKSHEET M AKER Word Search Word Search prints keywords hidden in a grid of letters. Words are placed horizontally, vertically, and diagonally (if selected). using all Uppercase prints capital letters in the grid. Leaving this option unchecked will create a grid of all lower case letters. with an Answer Key prints a separate answer sheet when the worksheet is printed. using Diagonal Words (Windows only) allows words to be placed in the grid diagonally. Otherwise, only horizontal and vertical orientations are used. with Keywords on first page, if possible (Windows only) prints the keywords on the same page as the puzzle if there is suffi cient room. Size (Windows only) selects the grid size of the puzzle: 1. Minimize: Builds the smallest puzzle possible. However, it will require more time to build the puzzle. 2. Page Width: Automatically adjusts the puzzle size to the width of the page. 3. Custom: Allows a user-selectable puzzle size....in random order (Macintosh only) prints keywords in a random sequence. 18

Help and Resources Online Help Each Skill Tree, as well as the management system, includes online help fi les that describe program navigation, specifi c options, and other program parameters. Accessing the Desktop and Other Programs (Windows) The entire desktop area is blocked from view when running the Orchard Manager or any other Skill Tree. If you need to access other programs or something on the desktop, either use the taskbar in Windows 95/98 or hold down the Ctrl key and press the Esc key (Ctrl+Esc).
