A pie chart is used to showcase parts of a whole or proportions of a whole. Charts are visual representations of data that can summarize large data sets and are useful for engaging one s audience. As always, it is wise to first look at your data and then decide which chart will best visually represent and fit your specific data set. The general rule of thumb is that there should be about five pieces in a pie chart if there are too many slices, then it s best to use another type of chart or a pie of pie chart in order to better showcase the data. One can easily create a pie chart and add rich data labels, to one s pie chart in Excel. So, let s see how to effectively use a pie chart and add rich data labels to your chart, in order to present data, using a simple tennis related example. Table of Contents 1 Introduction 2 Creating and formatting the Pie Chart 3 Formatting the Data Labels of the Pie Chart 4 Conclusion 5 Useful Chart related Links from ExcelDemy 6 Useful links Introduction Tennis analysts and data strategists often review tennis games, in order to classify the types of errors made by the tennis players during the match. Errors are broadly first divided, into forced and unforced errors in most tennis data strategist s dashboards and reports. Forced errors are errors that players are forced into making due to their opponent s skill, tactics, and strategies. Basically, one player forces the other player to make an error and thus that player forcing the error gains points. Unforced errors have nothing do with one s opponent generally. Unforced errors can be attributed to mental pressure or lack of focus, injuries, other illnesses or errors due to the player s inability on a particular type of court surface. Some players make more errors on hard court surfaces than clay court surfaces and thus have a preferred surface type to play on. Error analysis helps explain in part, the tennis phenomenon of tennis players claiming they didn t play their best game/best tennis in a tournament or match and yet still managed to win. Since due to their opponents making unforced errors the other player won the match without being technically superior. top-seeded player. He wants to visually present the main types of errors the player made and post discussion with the player, label what the unforced errors were primarily due to. After discussion with the player, the coach determines that most of the unforced errors in this particular case were due to the player suffering from the effects of sinusitis. And there you have it, the tennis coach at hand now has an analysis of the match errors presented in a visual format and a way to hone in on what the unforced errors were due too. Let s say post-match he discusses the performance of the player at hand with the assistant coach, and they decide the unforced errors were actually due to lack of concentration they can update cell A12, and the reason for the unforced data point callout then updates automatically. Conclusion Pie charts are useful ways of presenting parts of a whole. They are some of the most used chart types in reports, dashboards, and infographics. Excel provides a way to not only create charts but also to format them extensively so that they can be utilized with ease in presentations, posters and infographics. One can add rich data labels to data points or one point solely of a chart. Adding a rich data label linked to a certain cell is useful when you want to highlight a certain point on a chart or convey more information about this particular point. This can be utilized for statistical outliers as well, and one can label the outliers on a chart for example only in order to shed more insight on these outliers.
