4 Product description 4.1 Device overview The devices have a metal housing with an M18 or M30 male thread. The sonic transducer surface can be mounted flush to the surrounding area. All devices are connected to the sensor cable via an M12 male connector in metal. To detect the object, it is possible to configure a switching distance that is less than or equal to the maximum sensing rage and that must be greater than the minimum switching distance. The devices can be configured via buttons, a teach adapter, manual bridging or an IO-Link interface. The devices have two outputs that can be adjusted independently of one another. Output 1 is designed as a switching output, while output 2 can be used as a switching output, current output or voltage output. A switching distance and other functions can be configured for both outputs. Product description 4.3 Functional principle Ultrasonic sensors are designed for the non-contact and wear-free detection of a variety of objects by means of sound waves. It does not matter whether the object is transparent or opaque, metallic or non-metallic, firm, liquid or powdery. Environmental conditions such as spray, dust or rain also hardly affect the functioning of the sensors. Ultrasonic sensors emit one or several ultrasonic pulses that are propagated in the air at the speed of sound. A part of the ultrasonic wave is reflected back to the sensor by the object. The sensor measures the total time of flight from the sensor to the object and back to the sensor. The distance to the object is then calculated with the following formula: D = c t / 2 D = Distance from the sensor to the object c = Speed of sound in air t = Time of flight for the ultrasonic pulse To improve accuracy, the ultrasonic sensor forms the mean value from the measurement of several sound pulses before outputting a new value. The ultrasound velocity depends on the composition and the temperature of the gas in which the sound is propagated. In most ultrasound applications, the composition of the gas is stable whereas the temperature may often fluctuate. The speed of sound in air varies with the temperature according to the following approximation formula: C m/s = 20 273 + T C C m/s = Speed of sound in meters per second T C = Temperature in C Fluctuations in air temperature therefore affect the speed of sound, which in turn has an effect on the total time for the echo measured by the sensor. An increase in air temperature shifts both measuring range limits closer to the sensor. Conversely, both measuring range limits are shifted further away from the sensor by a drop in air temperature. This shift is approximately 3.5% of the limit distance with a temperature change of 20 C. Good ultrasonic reflectors are metals, glass, stone, wood with smooth and hard surfaces, as well as liquids that are aligned appropriately to the sensor. Cloth, sand or grains absorb some of the sonic energy. Foams and skins are particularly poor reflectors. 4.4 Functions and operating modes The ultrasonic sensors have two outputs that can be adjusted independently of one another. Output 1 can be used as a switching output, while output 2 can be used as a switching output, current output (4 20 ma/0 20 ma) or voltage output (0 10 V/0 5 V/1 6 V). The start and end point of the measuring range can be set for the outputs. The measuring range must be within the sensing range. The sensors can be operated as diffuse mode sensors or retro-reflective sensors during normal operation. Users can set a single switching point or a window or hysteresis function. Additional operating modes (throughbeam, multiplex, synchronous or release mode) can be parameterized via IO-Link. 10 Hans Turck GmbH & Co. 4.4.1 Setting options 4.4.2 Diffuse mode sensors The devices have three setting options: Setting via manual bridging (short-circuit) Setting via connected teach adapter (accessories to be ordered separately) Setting via buttons When using diffuse mode sensors, either a switching point or a switching window is defined. The switching window is used for window or hysteresis functions. Diffuse mode sensors with NC function When diffuse mode sensors with NC function are used, a switching point is taught in for a switching output. The output behaves as follows: 1 blind zone detection range 0 SP1 Fig. 4: Diffuse mode sensors with NC function behavior of the switching output Diffuse mode sensors with NO function When diffuse mode sensors with NO function are used, a switching point is taught in for a switching output. The output behaves as follows: 1 blind zone detection range 0 SP1 Fig. 5: Diffuse mode sensors with NO function behavior of the switching output V01.01 2016/10 11

Product description Window function The start and end point of the switching window can be set for the outputs. The switching window must be within the sensing range. 1 blind zone detection range out 0 SP1 SP2 max Fig. 6: Window function behavior of the switching output Hysteresis function When using the hysteresis function, a switching window is taught in that is defined by two switching points. The switching outputs have the following behavior as outputs: If an object is moved away from the sensor, the switching output is switched on for as long as the object is located between the beginning of the sensing range and the 2nd switching point. If the object passes the 2nd switching point, the switching output is switched off. If an object is moved towards the sensor, the switching output is switched on for as long as the object is located between the end of the sensing range and the 1st switching point. If the object passes the 1st switching point, the switching output is switched on. 1 blind zone detection range out out 0 switch-on switch-off Fig. 7: Hysteresis function behavior of the switching output 12 Hans Turck GmbH & Co. A narrow switching window is taught in within range of the reflector. The behavior of switching output 1 is inverted in relation to switching output 2. 1 blind zone out2 detection range 0 out1 target 4.4.4 IO-Link mode Multiplex mode Fig. 10: Retro-reflective mode sensors behavior of the switching output In IO-Link mode, the device can be parameterized from a PC via IO-Link. In addition to the manually adjustable functions, additional operating modes can be set via IO-Link. In multiplex mode, up to 10 ultrasonic sensors of the same type may be operated at fixed intervals one after the other without mutual feedback. A sensor is specified via IO-link as a master sensor. The other connected sensors are set as slaves. Communication via IO-Link is not possible during operation. V01.01 2016/10 13

Product description NOTE Multiplex mode is possible only with devices of the same type In multiplex mode, all connected sensors must have the same power and range. Only sensors with the same type code may be connected. The type code is printed on every device. In multiplex mode, the addresses must be assigned via IO-Link (e.g. via PACTware ). The master sensor must always retain the highest address of all the sensors working together. Example: When using a master sensor with three slaves, the master retains the address 3 and the connected slaves use the addresses 0 2. Synchronization mode Release mode In synchronization mode, any number of ultrasonic sensors of the same type can be operated at the same time without mutual feedback. The sensors do not need to be addressed; the master controls all sensors in a fixed time cycle with a trigger signal via pin 4. NOTE Synchronization mode is only possible with devices of the same type In synchronization mode, all connected sensors must have the same power and range. In synchronization mode, connect only sensors with the same type code. The type code is printed on every device. In release mode, ultrasonic sensors of different types can be individually activated and deactivated without mutual feedback via the higher-level controller. The sensor is only active if a signal to U B is issued at pin 5. Inactive sensors relay the most recent measured and valid values to the controller. Throughbeam mode In throughbeam mode, the range of an ultrasound application can be increased. To do this, sensors of the same type are used in pairs and function as emitters and receivers. NOTE Throughbeam mode is only possible with devices of the same type In throughbeam mode, all connected sensors must have the same power and range. In throughbeam mode, connect only sensors with the same type code. The type code is printed on every device. 14 Hans Turck GmbH & Co.
