INTRODUCTION The tests contained in this document are organized in order to simplify the identification of information related to a test, and to facilitate in the actual testing process. Tests are separated into groups, primarily in order to reduce setup time in the lab environment, however the different groups typically also tend to focus on specific aspects of device functionality. The test definitions themselves are intended to provide a high-level description of the motivation, resources, procedures, and methodologies specific to each test. Formally, each test description contains the following sections: Purpose The purpose is a brief statement outlining what the test attempts to achieve. The test is written at the functional level. References This section specifies all reference material external to the test suite, including the specific subclauses references for the test in question, and any other references that might be helpful in understanding the test methodology and/or test results. External sources are always referenced by a bracketed number (e.g., [1]) when mentioned in the test description. Any other references in the test description that are not indicated in this manner refer to elements within the test suite document itself (e.g., Appendix 6.A, or Table 6.1.1-1 ) Resource Requirements The requirements section specifies the test hardware and/or software needed to perform the test. This is generally expressed in terms of minimum requirements, however in some cases specific equipment manufacturer/model information may be provided. Last Modification This specifies the date of the last modification to this test. Discussion The discussion covers the assumptions made in the design or implementation of the test, as well as known limitations. Other items specific to the test are covered here as well. Test Setup The setup section describes the initial configuration of the test environment. Small changes in the configuration should not be included here, and are generally covered in the test procedure section (next). Procedure The procedure section of the test description contains the systematic instructions for carrying out the test. It provides a cookbook approach to testing, and may be interspersed with observable results. Observable Results This section lists the specific observables that can be examined by the tester in order to verify that the PUT is operating properly. When multiple values for an observable are possible, this section provides a short discussion on how to interpret them. The determination of a pass or fail outcome for a particular test is generally based on the successful (or unsuccessful) detection of a specific observable. Possible Problems This section contains a description of known issues with the test procedure, which may affect test results in certain situations. It may also refer the reader to test suite appendices and/or other external sources that may provide more detail regarding these issues. Serial ATA Logo Group 5 SATA CabCon MOI

Test Title:MCI-02: Insertion Force (Latching and Non-Latching) MCI-03: Retention Force (Non-Latching) Purpose: This test verifies that the Latching and Non-Latching cable do not exceed the maximum allowable insertion force and the Non-Latching cable meets the minimum required removal force. References: See main reference section Resource Requirements: Insertion/Removal force tester (Instron In-Spec 2200 Portable Benchtop Tester and In-Spec 2200 software, version 4.0 or last ) Cable Clamp Adaptor Reference Figure 1, SV-200LD-2 or equivalent Gage Clamp - Reference Figure 2, SV-200LD-1 or equivalent SATA nominal host plug Reference Figure 3, H3SATA0125010, Rev. X1 or equivalent SD memory card for storing files Computer with SD memory card reader, Instron In-Spec 2200 File Converter Microsoft Excel or similar software. Last Modification: November 15, 2006 Discussion: Reference [2] specifies the number of cycles to be tested when performing the tests specified in reference [1]. Test Setup: The Cable Clamp Adaptor shall be attached to the end of the upper arm of the Insertion/Removal force tester. It is not necessary to tighten firmly. A small amount of side movement will not affect the measurements and will help the PUT to self align. Attach Gage Clamp to base of the Insertion/removal force tester. It is not necessary to tighten firmly. A small amount of side movement will not affect the measurements and will help the PUT to self align. Test Procedure: Use this picture with the instructions below To configure the Instron In-Spec 2200 Portable Benchtop Tester, perform the following steps: Power on the tester, and wait for it to finish initialization. Go to the home screen of the controller (Sony Clie). Select "All" to view all the programs. Double click on the Instron program to start the program. Configure the software with the following settings: o PREFERENCES menu (click on the In-Spec in the upper left of the screen, then choose the Options menu, and choose Preferences to see this menu ) Time= minutes Extension = mm Load = Newtons Memory Stick Archive = ON Click on the Done button o Press the Control button (lower left of the screen) to configure the following settings: 12.5 mm/minute Preload = off Chan: = Ext Value = 5 mm Action = Reverse Set the number of cycles as specified for this test. AutoSave = on FileName = use the PUT s ID number, along with the run number (i.e. if the same PUT is retested later the run number would be incremented). An example is 00C_001_01. Click the Apply button to save the settings and then click the OK button. Serial ATA Logo Group 8 SATA CabCon MOI

o Press the Scale button to configure the following plot settings:: Horizontal scale = Extension 6 mm -1 mm Divs = 1 Vertical scale = Load +25 N -25 N Divs = 1 Select OK. o Align the PUT with the SATA nominal host plug. Mount the SATA Nominal Host Plug into the Gage Clamp centered below the Insertion/Removal force tester. Tighten the clamp to secure gage. Fully mate the PUT onto the SATA Nominal Host Plug. Use the up and down arrows at the top of the Instron In-Spec 2200 Portable Benchtop Tester to manually lower the Cable Clamp Adaptor into clamping position with the PUT and tighten the clamp. Use the up and down arrows at the top of the Instron In-Spec 2200 Portable Benchtop Tester to manually raise the PUT up 5 mm Reset the compression to zero for start point of the compression cycle. Balance the load cell configuration as follows: Press the bal button, to make the Load=0 N to balance the load cell (the bal button near the upper right of the screen) o In the upper right of the screen check it is set to Compression, so it will insert the connector when it starts. Then, press the button at the top of the Instron In-Spec 2200 Portable Benchtop Tester to begin the measurement. Wait for the measurement to finish (~40 seconds per cycle). Wait for the measurement to finish writing to the memory stick, and doing calculations. Then, to view the results: o Remove the SD memory card from the Instron tester and move the data file to a PC (Note: the card can simply be removed from the Instron while it is running (as long as it has finished writing to the file), it does not need to be shut off). o Use the Instron In-Spec 2200 File Converter (which may be called Handheld.exe ) to convert the *.pdb file into a.csv (text) file. Use the Time, Extension, Load option Use the Save As button to save the file with the same name, but a.csv file extension. o Open the file in Excel by double clicking on it (assuming Excel is configured to open *.csv files). o o Select all of the Extension and Load data with the following method: Select cells B3 and C3 Press Ctrl-Shift-Down_Arrow to select all the data below these cells. o Create a plot Click on the Chart Wizard button Select XY (Scatter) and the lower right Chart sub-type (data points connected by lines without markers). Select Finish to create the plot. Serial ATA Logo Group 9 SATA CabCon MOI

o Inspect the plot to locate the maximum insertion force, and minimum removal force and note it on the results form. NOTE: by holding the cursor over the plot Excel will display the force value associated with that point. For better accuracy it is recommended to zoom in on the chart to find the exact value. NOTE: the curve data between maximum insertion and minimum removal force can be ignored (this data is a result of sliding friction between the PUT and SATA nominal host plug ) Pass/Fail Criteria MCI-02 : Insertion Force (Latching and Non-Latching):45N max. MCI-03 : Removal Force (Non-Latching):10N min. through 20 cycles Typical Insertion/Removal Plot Newtons 25 15 5-6 -5-4 -3-2 -1-5 0 1-15 millimeters -25 Minimum removal force (NOTE: this is the max point of the INNERMOST curve. Maximum insertion force Possible Problems o Due to issues with the current SATA Nominal Host Plug, it is very difficult to align the PUT and set up the test travel without starting the test in the fully mated condition. This alignment method means that the 1 st insertion force is not captured. o The 1 st insertion force for the signal cable receptacle has not been seen as critical and the 2 nd insertion forces recorded have been well below the maximum. Serial ATA Logo Group 10 SATA CabCon MOI

Test Title: MCI-04 : Retention Force (Latching) Purpose: This test verifies that the latching cable meets the minimum retention force of the specification. References: See main reference section Resource Requirements: Cable Clamp Adaptor Reference Figure 1, SV-200LD-02 or equivalent Vendor supplied Latching plug connector Mass weight, 25N metal block Last Modification: November 15, 2006 Test Setup: o Place the Vendor supplied Latching plug connector into the Cable Clamp Adaptor o Mate PUT from MCI 02 to Vendor supplied Latching plug connector o Attach Mass Weight, 25N Metal Block onto cable (Note, cable should not be subjected to any bends below 25mm radius and care shall be used to avoid any kinks in the cable due to the test weight attachment) Test Procedure: o Suspend Mass Weight, 25N Metal Block freely in air from PUT for one minute minimum. Observable Results: o PUT is expected to support the Mass Weight. o PUT can be easily removed (un-latched) after test. Pass/Fail Criteria o No damage and no unintentional disconnect Possible problems o In the event of a test failure, it is difficult to determine which component is at fault. Replace the Vendor supplied Latching plug connector with an unused part and repeat the test procedure. Appendix A Areas for future improvement PUT Alignment o Improve alignment to capture 1 st insertion o Improvement of the Nominal Host Plug Gage Remove sharp edges on lead in chamfers to reduce wear Minimize insertion depth to reduce cycle time Guarantee there is full engagement of bump and recess without hard interference to gage Add latching wall to capture maximum insertion force of latching connector Latching test gage o Need Nominal Plug Gage for MCI-04 (Latching) Serial ATA Logo Group 11 SATA CabCon MOI
