Opus 21 XS extra sources Owner's Manual r e s o l u t i o n

From all of us at Resolution Audio, thank you for choosing the Opus 21 XS. In conjuction with the Opus 21 compact disc player, the XS creates a complete 2-channel high performance audio system. Unpacking After unpacking your Opus 21 XS, inspect it for any shipping damage and contact us immediately if any is found. Do not connect to the Opus 21 system if you find any shipping damage. Please keep all packing materials for future transport. Shipping the Opus 21 in anything other than its original crate may result in damage that is not covered by warranty. If you require a replacement crate or packing materials, please contact Resolution Audio. Should you need to repack the unit, be certain to place it between the supplied foam sheets, with the accessory box on top. The accessory box contains the following items: Remote control (2) AAA batteries Digital cable for connection to Opus 21 cd player AM loop antenna To install the batteries in the remote control, open the cover on the back of the remote. Insert the batteries in the orientation shown in the compartment, and replace the cover. Installation The XS must be used in conjuction with your Opus 21 cd player and Power Centre. Your Power Centre may require a software update for use with the XS. Contact your dealer or Resolution Audio directly for assistance. Turn off the power to the Opus 21 at the rear of the Power Centre. Prior to installation, all equipment should be turned off using the main power switch. The XS must be located directly underneath your Opus 21 cd player. First, remove the dust cover from the connector located on the bottom of your Opus 21 cd player. Next, position the cd player directly on top of the XS, ensuring the connectors are aligned. Press the connectors firmly together to secure the connection.

Using the XS with an Opus 21 series amplifier The XS must be located directly above your amplifier. Remove the dust cover from the connector located on the bottom of your Opus 21 XS. Next, position the XS directly on top of the amplifier, and install it as the cd player was installed above. Using the XS with another preamplifer or amplifier Turn off all of your components prior to connecting the Opus 21. This minimizes the chance of momentary electrical surges disturbing your system. When using a preamp or integrated amplifier, use the fixed outputs. With all of your equipment turned off, connect the analog outputs labeled FIXED to any line-level input of your preamp or integrated amp. When using a power amplifer, use the variable outputs. With all of your equipment turned off, connect the analog outputs labeled VAR to the inputs of your amplifier. Turn on the main power switch of the Opus 21 Power Centre. The ON position is selected when the symbol on the switch is depressed. The Opus 21 will take a few seconds to initialize and read the disc if present. The Opus 21 initially sets the volume to a low level (50). Turn on the rest of your system. It is a good habit to turn the amplifier on last, and off first, to prevent surges and transients from reaching your loudspeakers. Insert a disc and press PLAY, or select any of the sources provided by the XS. Adjust the volume. When using the FIXED outputs, the volume is controlled by your preamp or integrated amp.

If the tuner was not the active source, Tune will also select the tuner. 6 7 STATION DOWN / UP In SEEK mode, the next station will be found. The tuner will automatically wrap around the ends of the band. To stop seeking the next station, press this button again. In PRESET mode, the next preset station will be selected. Holding one of the buttons will rapidly advance through the preset stations. 8 Store PRESET STORE This button is used to store stations in the preset memory. In the case of a multi-channel source, the digital output should be set to 2-channel PCM mode. Compressed audio such as Dolby Digital or DTS will not be decoded. 12 13 14 Digital Link to CD Connect to Opus 21 cd digital input using the supplied cable. Use the red plug at the XS and the black plug at the CD. AM Antenna Connect the included loop-antenna to the screw terminals. Adjust its position with respect to the direction of the transmitter to improve reception. FM Antenna For optimal FM radio reception a roof or loft mounted aerial is recommended. A 75 Ohm coaxial cable should be used to bring the radio signal to the tuner. Alternatively, an indoor dipole antenna may be used. Mount it as high on the wall as possible, and position the elements horizontally.

Remote Control The Opus 21 XS remote control contains most of the controls on the front panels, plus the following: Display Mute Tray Repeat System This button controls the intensity of the display. Upon power-up, the display begins in its brightest state. Subsequent presses of this button cycle through four levels: Bright Medium Dim Off In the Off mode, pressing any key will "wake-up" the display momentarily at medium intensity. If the disc is playing, pressing play on the remote will wake the display without affecting playback. Pressing this button engages the muting function without affecting the transport or volume setting. A second press restores the output to its current volume setting. When mute is on, the volume level indication flashes. CD Transport Pressing this button opens and closes the cd drawer. Pressing this button once enters disc repeat mode. A second press enters track repeat mode. A third press, or ejecting the disc, exits repeat mode. Repeat is indicated on the display by the following symbols: Disc repeat Track repeat 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 RDS Band Tune Mono 10101 Digital Analog Phono r e s o l u t i o n Mono RDS Tuner Pressing this button forces the current FM station into mono. When the tuned station is weak, background hiss can be reduced by selecting mono. Changing stations will revert automatically to stereo. Pressing this button changes the RDS display (FM only): PS (program service) RT (radiotext) Off If no PS or RT information is available for the current station, no action is taken. On power-up, the default RDS display is PS.

Prev Next Scan Multifunction When playing a cd, pressing these buttons selects the next/previous track. Holding the button will rapdily advance through the tracks. When the tuner is selected, these buttons act the same as the up/down buttons on the XS front panel. In SEEK mode, the next station will be found. In PRESET mode, the next preset will be selected. When playing a cd, pressing and holding these buttons will perform a fast forward or backward scan. The program will be audible at a reduced level in play mode, and silent in pause mode. When the tuner is selected, these buttons free tune and allow any frequency to be selected. This will also force the tuner into SEEK mode. 0, 1,.. 9 When the tuner is the selected source, these buttons provide direct access to preset stations available on the current band. If any other source is in use, they provide direct access to tracks on the cd. For example, to go directly to track 25, press 2 followed by 5. For track 2, either press 0 followed by 2, or press 2 and wait a moment. Setup Mode The Opus 21 offers customization features accessible in the SETUP mode. For example, the inital volume setting on power-up can be changed from the default of 50. To access this mode, place the Opus 21 in standby (via remote control or front panel) and then press the REPEAT button on the remote. Successive presses of the PLAY button will display the setup options as well as displaying the firmware revisions present in each product. The custom settings selected in setup will be remembered when power is disconnected. To exit setup mode, press the REPEAT button. The Opus 21 will re-enter standby mode. In setup mode, the tuner region can be changed. This will set the tuning steps and frequencies available for the selected region. Note that changing regions will also clear all stored preset stations. Presets may also be cleared by pressing the 5 button during the appropriate setup option as indicated on the display.
