Ability to edit (nudge) audio on a subframe level Posted by mauricesteenbergen - 24 Aug 2011 09:02 EDITED THE SUBJECT TO BETTER REFLECT THE FEATURE REQUESTED Dear Lightworkers, I would really like to see the ability to input negative values in the Audio Chequerboarding panel, to be able to shift audio backwards in time instead of just forward. Audio is not always too fast, it can be behind on sync too. Must be a very simple feature to implement, and would be very much appreciated Keep up the good work, Maurice. Posted by SMPse - 24 Aug 2011 23:23 The value you enter in the Audio Chequerboard panel is the audio clips overlap value (in frames/seconds) between the tracks, so a negative value would only create shorter audio clips with audio gaps as a result. Not sure how you'll find this useful. Posted by mauricesteenbergen - 25 Aug 2011 06:41 I misunderstood the function then, when trying it out i figured it was to shift audio on a subframe level. That's something i would really find useful when syncing audio and video. A nudge function (-/+) on a subframe level. Posted by frandesouza - 25 Aug 2011 07:25 1 / 5
Hi, by "backwards" you mean to play in reverse speed? If so, you only have to click in the dropdown menu by the 100% value and select "reverse". for faster speeds, type "-150%", "-200%" and so Posted by mauricesteenbergen - 25 Aug 2011 07:37 Hi, no i really mean nudging audio backwards, for sync purposes Posted by frandesouza - 25 Aug 2011 07:56 you can unjoin both edges of your audio tracks and nudge them backwards or forwards using the left/right keys on your keyboard until they are in sync. or unjoin the audio tracks, type a value and press enter. Posted by mauricesteenbergen - 25 Aug 2011 07:57 Does that also work on a subframe level? Posted by frandesouza - 25 Aug 2011 08:06 Oh, sorry, I think in this case is not so. In spite of the audio nodes can be created in a subframe level, the function we are dealing now only takes place in increments of one frame, at least to my knowledge. Posted by mauricesteenbergen - 25 Aug 2011 08:09 i think it would be an important step forward in using lightworks for a complete production solution if it 2 / 5
was able to edit audio on a subframe level, a lot of times 1/24th, 1/25th or 1/30th of a second resolution just isn't enough. Posted by frandesouza - 25 Aug 2011 08:18 yes, especially when your audio source comes from a different device you used to record the video, like a music video clip for example. Posted by SMPse - 25 Aug 2011 08:53 Dealing with audio on a subframe level for video can throw things out of sync quickly if you don't have a proper setup, like here. Posted by sakki - 04 Mar 2015 20:06 Hi I know this is an old post, but I ll reply to it anyway, as this is still an issue. I have been looking for a solution for the problem, and I think I have found a workaround. This is what I did: 1. Import the audio from your video clip into Audacity 2. Import your external audio source onto a second track 3. Align the second track to the first one. It is important that the timing is not altered. 4. Silence the audio from the first track 5. Mix and render the two tracks together. 6. Do anything else you need to do with the audio: Noise removal, Compression, etc. 7. Export the rendered audio 3 / 5
8. Import audio and video into Lightworks 9. All you have to do now is to place both the video and the audio at the beginning of the timeline, and that should be it. No further syncing necessary. With longer clips you may need to add a step between 3 and 4 in order to correct the pace as well. I have never done this though, and evidently I do not even know the correct term for it Best regards, Sakarias Ingolfsson Posted by Guitar Bill - 08 May 2015 04:09 Thank you Sakki! I'm using Lightworks specifically for music related stuff, mainly guitar gear demos and reviews for YouTube. One of the main things I need is perfectly synced audio and Lightworks is infuriating because you can't actually sync the audio close enough to matter! There's always a delay unless you get lucky and the audio happens to line up with a frame. Who is this program for anyway if it can't properly sync audio? -Bill Curran Posted by Guitar Bill - 08 May 2015 04:32 Ugh, I give up. Audacity won't import the audio from my videos, Lightworks won't allow moving the seperate external audio track on a sub frame level (why?). So my conclusion is that Lightworks is absolutely useless for this application. Know of any other free video editing software that can ACTUALLY sync audio? The sub frame editing would be more for matching audio on separate tracks, you don't need it for syncing the audio to the pictures which only have a temporal resolution of one frame. So, you can use Lightworks for cutting a music video, but not as an multi track audio editor for creating the music. 5 / 5
