Online classroom etiquette We want all students to have an opportunity to listen, learn, and participate in class. To make this happen, we ask our students to follow these guidelines for behavior in ODUOnline web conferencing classes: 1. Don t talk on the phone or carry on conversations with people at your location while class is in session. 2. Mute your mic when you are not speaking. If your mic is always on, it can pick up background noises which will distract other students and your professor. 3. Dress appropriately, as if you were going to class in person. 4. Try to sit where you have good lighting so that your classmates and professor can see you. Remember that they can also see the wall or room behind you. Try to avoid mirrors and reflections. Aim your webcam so that you sit in the center of the frame. You can always test your set up using the Web Conference Test Link on the class access page. 5. Always connect to class on time. (You may want to log in a couple of minutes early, just in case you have any technical difficulties.) 6. Speak clearly, and pause occasionally to allow others to ask questions. 7. Never attempt to drive and attend class at the same time. Page 2

Log in to your WebEx class To log in to your class, follow these steps: 1. Go to online.odu.edu and click Student Access in the upper right corner. 2. Click Class access from the drop-down menu. 3. Click on the current semester s Web Conference Class Launch Pages link. 4. Select your course from the list. Quick tip: While you are viewing an online class, don t run any other network-intensive applications on your computer, such as streaming video it can cause your web conference connection to lag or freeze. Page 3

Log in to your WebEx class 5. Click to Login you will be prompted to use your MIDAS ID and password. 6. Click to join class. Please sign in with your full name and ODU email address, as it may be used for taking attendance. Page 4

Change views, go full screen When you first log in to WebEx: The large area to the right will show slides if the presenter is sharing their screen. The video on the right will show the person who is currently speaking. Your webcam video will be in the lower right corner. Below the video is a list of attendees. You can change the view by hovering your mouse above the video box and clicking one of the buttons which appears in the top left corner. You can enlarge the presentation window by clicking on the icon with the arrows here. Click the first icon to see all particpant names in a list. Click the second icon to see the webcam video of all participants. Click the third icon with the arrows to enlarge the presenter s video. This is useful when the presenter is lecturing without slides, or showing a physical object to the class. In full screen mode, you can still access the participant list and chat window from the WebEx toolbar at the top of the screen. To exit full-screen mode, click the blue Return button. Page 5

Chat Some instructors use the Chat feature during class. To open the Chat box, click on the Chat bubble above the presenter s video. Chat messages appear here. You can choose who will receive your message a single person or Everyone. Type your message here and click Send. Page 6

Presentations You can make presentations in WebEx, and some instructors may assign class presentations. To do this, the instructor will make you a Presenter. Then you can display a file or your computer desktop to the rest of the class. 1. Take control of the class screen by clicking on Make Me Presenter. Page 7

Presentations 2. WebEx will ask you to confirm that you want to change your role in the class. Click Yes. 3. You are now the Presenter. Click Share Desktop. Page 8

Presentations 4. Your screen will change so that you can see your desktop. The rest of the students and the instructor can now see your desktop, too. A WebEx toolbar will stay at the top of your screen, so you have access to audio controls and the chat window. Don t forget to unmute your microphone. 5. Open a program or file to show it to the rest of the class. You can even draw on your screen using the Annotate tool. When your presentation is complete, click on the orange button in the toolbar, Stop Sharing. Page 9

At the end of class To leave a WebEx session: 1. From the File menu at the top of the meeting window, click on Leave Meeting. 2. A confirmation message will ask you to verify that you want to leave the meeting. 3. Click Yes. 4. The meeting window will now close. You can also leave by going to the Quick Start tab and clicking the Leave Meeting button on the left side. Remember, support is always available! Call 1-877-348-6503 or email itshelp@odu.edu. ODU s technical support team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Page 10
