LEED and The IMPACT on The RCDD BICSI 2007 Autumn Conference
What is LEED Today s Discussion Why Build Green Typical Projects BICSI Responds Summary
What is LEED? Launched in 1998 by the United States Green Building Council (2004 Canada GBC) is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System BICSI is the Internationally accepted benchmark for information and knowledge related to the design, integration, and installation of high performance Information Transport Systems.

In late 2006, SITQ announced work would begin on a new prestigious office building in the heart of downtown Montréal, the 900 De Maisonneuve West. A 750,000-squarefoot, 28-floor office building will soon occupy a vacant lot linking Metcalfe and Mansfield streets.

BICSI s Involvement with USGBC August 2007 - BICSI recognizes no Technology Credits available for LEED rated projects March 2008 - BICSI meets with USGBC USGBC recommends that t BICSI lead a group named BICSI LEED Consortium Original members were BICSI and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) June 2008 Consortium first meeting with USGBC
BICSI s Involvement with USGBC July 2008 Consortium adds InfoComm as a member November 2008 Consortium meets at the International ti lgreenbuild Conference in Boston, MA, to develop Innovation Technology Credits December 2008 Consortium name changed to Green Building Technology Alliance to be organization-neutral Alliance adds CABA as member
BICSI s Involvement with USGBC May 2009 Submitted first Innovation Technology Credit to USGBC
GBTA Members BICSI Brian Hansen Betty Bezos Dave Labuskes InfoComm Randal Lemke Scott Walker Tony Warner (Chair) TIA Andy Kurtzman (Secretary) Kevin Ressler CABA Ron Zimmer Roy Kolasa Randy Storch
GBTA Focus Develop Innovation Technology Credits for LEED that could apply within existing Innovation in Design sections Solicit suggestions from the participating GBTA member organizations for possible Technology Credits
GBTA Focus Work with USGBC to create a Best Practices Guide for Technology Get technology information added into their reference guides Possibly develop our own Green Technology Certification

ITS and LEED ITS requirements will not change significantly but how we implement them and coordinate them with Architects, Electrical, Mechanical and Structural Engineers will become increasingly important. In the future, today s LEED points will look insignificant i ifi as all new facilities reach Gold and Platinum. By necessity, the points program will become more stringent and ITS will play a greater role in monitoring new facility management systems Since IT equipment is now becoming the largest user of energy expect new LEED requirements for ITS design and implementation
SUMMARY ITS design and/or methodology is not spelled out in LEED However, ITS designers must be prepared to discuss, engage and support others in the design of LEED facilities New innovative LEED solutions not directly linked to ITS may impact future ITS products The ITS industry should adopt and promote LEED type initiatives internally Is our Cat 6 manufactured from recycled Cat 5? Where have all the ST connectors gone? Landfill?
