Warning To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the Power Director 3.5 to rain or moisture. To avoid electrical shock, do not open the enclosure. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only. To prevent electric shock, use only a 3 prong, grounded type power cable. Any change or modifications not expressly approved in the manual could void your warranty. Safety Instructions Read the operating instructions provided with the Power Director 3.5. Retain the operating instructions for later use and reference. Unplug the Power Director 3.5 from the wall outlet before changing the fuse or performing any cleaning or service. Do not operate the Power Director 3.5 near water. Avoid placement near a water reservoir or excessive moisture. When replacement parts are required, ensure they are specified by the manufacturer to have the same characteristics as the original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire, electric shock, or other hazards. Do not operate with faulty or frayed power cables. Overview The Power Director 3.5 is a power management device capable of delivering superb AC performance to your audio and video components. The PS Audio Power Director 3.5 is designed to operate as a stand-alone power management tool, or as a part of a larger power management system. In most cases, a single Power Director 3.5 will be all you will need to operate, protect and improve the performance of an entire home theater or home audio system. The Power Director 3.5 has 3 electrically isolated zones and 5 duplex receptacles, hence the suffix 3.5. Each zone is identical in power delivery capability. All zones are electrically isolated. All settings on the Power Director 3.5 can be made with the back panel slide switches. 3 High Current Ultimate Outlets deliver power to 5 Power Port Duplex receptacles 3 isolated power zones minimize electrical interference between connected components Independent switched, passive or delayed power-up settings for each zone Reduction of AC line noise up to 40dB Lowers AC impedance for better transients Non current limiting design Sophisticated surge and spike protection using high voltage MOV devices and tranzorb diodes Replaceable surge protection card AC and Coaxial line surge and spike protection PS Audio brushed aluminum FRAME chassis Fits Middle Atlantic rack shelf RSH4S/RSH4A- Power Director 2

Setup Guide 1. Place the Power Director 3.5 in a rack or on a shelf in an Audio/Video system. The Power Director 3.5 produces no heat, so placement of the Director is a simple matter of preference. It is safe to stack equipment up to a total of 20 pounds on top of the Director. 2. Plug in the equipment to be powered by the Director. There are three electrically isolated zones on the Power Director 3.5. Suggestions have been made on the rear panel as to how the equipment might be grouped together, but since each zone is identical (except for the number of outlets) components can be placed in the most convenient combination. For optimum performance, it is recommend that analog equipment (stereo preamps, tuner, tape deck, etc.) be grouped separately from digital equipment (AV preamps, CD/DVD players, D to A converters, etc.). Items with high power consumption (power amps, A/V receivers, projection T.V. s etc.) should each use a separate zone if possible. 3. Set the power mode for each of the three zones with the rear panel switches. On the far left side of the rear panel of the Power Director 3.5, there are three separate slide switches. Each switch represents one of the Director s three zones and each switch has three-positions. The available settings are: Always On [ON] - With the switch in the ON position, the zone will receive power as soon as the Power Director 3.5 is plugged into a power source. Power will continue to pass through this zone even if the Director is switched off (standby mode). Switched [SW] - In the SW position, the zone will receive power as soon as the Power Director is switched on (operate mode). No power will pass to this zone when the Director is in standby mode. Delayed [DL] - In the DL position, the zone will activate three seconds after the Power Director is in operate mode. No power will pass to this zone when the Director is in standby mode. 4. Use the coaxial pass through to protect and provide surge/spike protection to any CATV, Satellite, or external antenna lines. There is one coaxial pass through on the rear panel of the Power Director 3.5. The pass through will deliver the full bandwidth of HDTV signals. 5. Plug the Power Director 3.5 into a power source. Use the supplied AC power cable, or an aftermarket power cable. For optimum results we recommend the use of a PS Audio xstream Power cable. 7. Turn on the Power Director 3.5 by pressing the power button located on the left side of the front panel. The three zones of Power Director 3.5 will come on according to the settings of the rear panel slide switches. Note: surge protection will be provided at all times for all connected equipment regardless of power mode setting. Use with PS Audio Power Plants The Power Director 3.5 can be used in conjunction with any of the PS Audio Power Plants or other PS Audio power devices. The Power Plant can either be used at the output of one of the zones or to provide power to the Power Director 3.5. This can be helpful in large systems in order to extend the number of outlets and isolation benefits to more components. When used at the output of the Power Director the Power Plant will provide isolation and additional cleansing to any product powered by it. This will also allow the Power Plant to be switched on with the Director. When plugging the Power Director into the output of a Power Plant ensure that the rated capacity of the power plant is adequate to supply all of the components powered by the Power Director. 3

Rear Panel 1. Power mode switches The Power mode switches correspond to each of the Power Zones. These switches are used to control how the power zones respond to the front panel power button. They can be set in the following ways: Always On [ON] - With the switch in the ON position, the zone will receive power as soon as the Power Director 3.5 is plugged into a power source. 2. Circuit Breaker In the event that the connected gear draws more than 15 amps of current the circuit breaker will trip and no power will pass through any of the outlets. To reset the circuit breaker press the toggle switch. 3. IEC Power Input 15 Amp male IEC inlet. 4. DC Trigger (input) The Director is equipped with a DC input trigger. The DC trigger will control the power status of the Director. See the DC Trigger section for more information. 5. Coaxial Pass Through The coaxial pass through will provide surge protection from abnormal voltage situations on CATV or satellite lines. The coaxial pass through will pass the full bandwidth of HDTV signals. 6. Power Zone: Analog The Analog Power Zone can be used to connect any type of equipment. For best results products such as preamplifiers, phono equipment, tuner or tape equipment should be grouped on the same Power Zone. 7. Power Zone: Digital/Video The Digital/Video Power Zone can be used to connect any type of equipment. For best results the Digital/Video Power Zone should be used to connect any digital equipment and display devices. Products such as DVD/CD players, PVRs, Satellite or CATV tuners, Television sets or front/rear projectors should be grouped on the same Power Zone. 8. Power Zone: Amplifier The Amplifier Power Zone can be used to connect any type of equipment. For best results the Amplifier Power Zone should be used to connect any amplifiers or subwoofers. Note: The names regarding the Power Zones are simply suggestions. Each zone is identical (except the number of outlets). To provide the most effective isolation follow the guidelines listed above. For optimum performance, it is recommend that analog equipment be grouped separately from digital equipment. Items with very high power consumption should use separate zones. 4

Front Panel Power On/Off Pressing the Power button will toggle the unit from standby mode to operate mode. When in operation mode the Director will output AC power to any of the three zones that are set to the delayed (DL) or switched (SW) position on the rear panel. The front panel logo will illuminate when the Director is on. The Power Director 3.5 will indicate protection circuitry failure. In this condition the front panel logo will blink and no power will be provided from the rear panel outlets regardless of the position of the power mode switches. If this situation persists contact service at PS Audio. Note: any zone whose corresponding rear panel switch is in the ON position will continue to pass power and provide surge protection even if the director is in standby mode. DC Trigger The DC input trigger mini-jack (3.5 mm) will control the power status of the Director. Connect the Director to the product which will control the power status of the Director with a mini-jack cable (male-male). The Director will switch on and off with the power status of the connected product. The trigger will respond to DC voltage over the range of 6-18 Volts. The Director will be on when voltage is present and will switch off when the voltage is removed. Logo trim tool The Logo trim tool is used to adjust the potentiometer which controls the illumination intensity of the PS logo. Locate the hole in the bottom of the Director. It is directly below the PS logo. Insert the Logo trim tool. Twist clockwise to increase the illumination of the PS logo. Twist counter-clock wise to decrease the illumination. The logo can be dimmed entirely. 5

Troubleshooting Guide In the event you experience difficulties with the operation of your Power Director 3.5, we offer the following suggestions: Unit will not turn on. 1. Check the obvious. Is it plugged in, and is the AC wall outlet live? If the PS logo still does not illuminate when in operate mode, use the included Logo trim tool to adjust the intensity of the logo. See the Logo trim tool section on page 5 for more information. 2. Check the circuit breaker on the Power Director 3.5. Check to make sure the breaker has not tripped. If it has been tripped, push it in to reset it. The circuit breaker may require a few minutes before it can be reset. 3. Check the internal fuse. The chances of the Power Director 3.5 s internal fuse being blown are very remote. This fuse is there to protect the control circuitry. Unplug the Power Director 3.5 from the wall outlet before removing the top cover. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a 3- amp fast blow (5x20mm) fuse. 4. There is an un-powered jack plugged into the DC trigger input. If there is a connector plugged into the DC trigger input located on the rear of the Power Director 3.5, the unit will not turn on unless that connector has at least 6 volts DC on it. Remove the connector if necessary. Specific Power Zones will not turn off. If any power mode switch on the rear panel is set to ON then that specific zone will continue to pass power even if the director is switched off. Move the switch for the specific zone to switched [SW] power mode. The director will now only provide power when it is on. The front panel logo is flashing. The Power Director 3.5 will indicate protection circuitry failure by flashing the front panel logo. Under this condition no power will be provided from the rear panel outlets regardless of the position of the power mode switches. If this situation persists contact service at PS Audio. The PS logo does not illuminate. If all power mode switches are set to ON then the Power Director 3.5 will still continue to pass power to connected products when in standby mode. The PS logo will not illuminate. Ensure the Power Director 3.5 is in operate mode. 6
