Scalable Resource Management With traditional server connectivity, you manage specific resources consisting of cards, cables, and switches. This complexity limits flexibility and complicates growth. Oracle Fabric Manager adds powerful abstraction tools that make it just as easy to manage dozens or thousands of resources as it is to manage just one. You can modify network configurations across server groups via a single drag-and-drop operation. And you can manage connectivity as scalable channels rather than specific links, so infrastructure can grow seamlessly to meet expanding demand. Elements of Oracle Fabric Manager Two elements serve as the foundation for Oracle Fabric Manager: Resource clouds. In Oracle Fabric Manager, a cloud defines a storage or network destination, such as a production network or a storage area network (SAN) device. Connectivity templates. Templates allow you to characterize the connectivity required by specific server types. You define both the destinations (the network and storage clouds) and the functional aspects of the connections, such as required bandwidth and availability. You can apply templates to a server or group of servers to provision access to needed resources. Figure 3. Role-Based Access Control Oracle Fabric Manager is designed to preserve functional management roles within the data center, allowing server, network, and storage managers to maintain full control over their specific domains. Each sees and administers familiar assets while gaining the power and flexibility afforded by resource virtualization. Visualization With traditional server connectivity, performance problems can be hard to detect and even harder to fix. With the Oracle Fabric Monitor plug-in, Oracle Fabric Manager remedies this problem by letting you monitor live performance on specific ports and on virtual resources. From a single console, you can view resources, connectivity, and configuration settings within a server or across the data center. You can instantly spot exactly where bandwidth is needed. And when bottlenecks arise, you have options to resolve issues nondisruptively in seconds. Figure 4. Performance Management When you need to ensure a great user experience or deliver bandwidth to meet a service-level agreement, Oracle Fabric Manager s quality of service (QoS) settings provide the granular, positive control you need. Configure committed and peak information rate settings on both servers and storage to meet application requirements. 3

Feature Set The core and enterprise versions of Oracle Fabric Manager include a rich set of features. Core Version Topology view. Visualize the environment s physical and logical topology. Server grouping. Group servers and manage them as a single entity. I/O templates. Configure connectivity templates and rapidly deploy repeatable configurations across multiple servers. Network and storage clouds. Storage and network administrators define specific storage and network resources and standard policies such as QoS and virtual local area networks (VLANs) and even specific logical unit numbers (LUNs) as part of a resource cloud. Clouds can then be provisioned as part of I/O templates to simplify end-to-end I/O provisioning. QoS per virtual resource. Assign specific bandwidth per virtual network interface card (vnic) or virtual host bus adapter (vhba) to guarantee performance. Role-based access control. Assign user roles to manage specific sets of storage, network, and compute resources based on permissions, including integration with Microsoft s Active Director or the RADIUS networking protocol for remote authentication. Oracle Fabric Interconnect management. Manage and configure Oracle Fabric Interconnect hardware and software, including firmware upgrades, chassis management, and I/O module configuration. Enterprise Version QoS per virtual machine. Assign committed information rate (CIR) and peak information rate (PIR) values directly to virtual machines by assigning QoS to a specific media access control (MAC) address. Resource domains. Segregate ownership of resources by creating resource domains that include specific server, storage, and networking resources as a subset of a larger environment. Each resource domain can then be administered independently based on roles and domain assignments. Discovery subnets. Manage resources in multiple locations and across data centers by discovering and managing Oracle Fabric Interconnects across multiple independent subnets. 4
