With XDCAM family decks, ingest is as easy as drag & drop. Native support for XDCAM and XDCAM EX codecs means that nothing is lost to decompression or recompression during ingest. The system also provides logging for tape-based HDV and DVCAM assets via the i.link * 1 interface. You can ingest either manually or via scheduled batch upload. Once the material is in, you can sit at an affordable PC and browse the clips via metadata and low-resolution proxy. It s fast, easy and incredibly efficient. *1: i.link is a Sony trademark used only to designate that a product is equipped with an IEEE 1394 connector. Not all products with an i.link connector may communicate with each other. Please refer to the documentation that comes with any device having an i.link connector for information on compatibility, operating conditions, and proper connection. 4
Generic file support: still pictures, audio and NLE project files Editing projects don t live by video clips alone. That s why the system can ingest just about any computer file, including still pictures and audio files. You get smarter, easier content management when importing NLE project files or other data types, together with related video clips. File Import Editing Simple Storyboarding You can build a simple, offline storyboard using the system s proxy audio and video. The system can even combine clips from multiple codecs* 1 on a single storyboard, for example XDCAM HD and XDCAM EX material. When you re done, save your storyboard as an XML file. Now your NLEs can access the storyboard directly without time-consuming transcoding or importing. *1: It is not possible to mix clips of different frame-rates on a single timeline. Storyboarding NLE Support For online editing, the system supports major nonlinear editing systems including Sony Vegas Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro 7, Grass Valley Edius and Adobe Premiere PRO. Not wedded to a single NLE platform, you re free to build an editing environment that perfectly suits your needs. Sony Vegas Pro Software Networked workgroup collaboration Forget about isolated islands. The Media Backbone HDXchange system empowers you to create a truly collaborative editing environment over an IT network. At the core of the system is a NAS-based network server equipped with a standard Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) or 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) interface, which connects to both Windowsbased and Mac OS NLEs. Your editors don t even need to download high-resolution clips to their local terminals. This saves time, saves disk space and enables editors to work on several projects in parallel. Multi-purpose platform integration Another advantage of file-based content production is that it allows smooth integration with third-party platforms, such as playout systems, Blu-ray Disc /DVD authoring systems, web content production systems and a MOS Gateway for newsroom integration. Not only is it easy to send file-based content to and from other systems via Gigabit Ethernet, but automatic registration via metadata eliminates the time usually needed for bridging platforms. 5
Easy archiving The Media Backbone HDXchange system interfaces beautifully with a range of disk- and tape-based archives. Chief among these is the Sony's PetaSite library system, which takes full advantage of the fact that magnetic tape is the most costeffective medium for high-capacity data storage. Working side by side, the PetaSite and Media Backbone HDXchange systems enable sophisticated search-and-retrieve workflows. You can search the high-resolution archived content using keywords, titles, and other metadata. Then you can browse, log and storyboard the proxy A/V online even before you retrieve the full-resolution asset! Up to 4.5 PB* 1 with Eight Consoles *1: Native capacity with LTO-5 tape cartridges.
