Interoute, from the ground to the cloud
1. Interoute is the ONLY European Provider in the Gartner MQ for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service, Worldwide Recognised by Industry Analysts 2. Interoute is the visionary leader in the Gartner MQ for Cloud Enabled Managed Hosting, Europe 3. Rated Excellent for Product Viability - Gartner Pan- European Network Service providers report Interoute pursues unified approach to ICT delivery with deep platform integration 25/03/14 Interoute certainly has a strong set of capabilities and products to work with as it brings forth the notion of unified ICT delivery on a global scale 1. Gartner MQ for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service, Worldwide, May 2015 2. Gartner MQ Cloud Enabled Managed Hosting Europe, June 2015 GSCB Workshop, ESA/ESRIN (Frascati) 3. Expertise and activities relevant for future EO Ground Segments and Services UNLIMITED NETWORK CONNECTIVITY Interoute can provide a secure, scalable and high capacity network Since 2010 Interoute has been providing WAN services to 11 ESA GS sites (from 1 Gbts to over 10 Gbts) in Italy, Sweden, UK, Spain, Germany, Norway and France. Interoute is currently delivering connectivity to 18 ESA Corporate sites (2 Gbts) PRIVATE CLOUD CONFIDENCE - PUBLIC CLOUD FLEXIBILTY Interoute has more Cloud Zones in Europe than any other provider (+ Zones in USA and ASIA). Interoute s cloud DC are integrated into Interoute s private network that can also be public. ESA has been using Interoute s Cloud and storage services since 2012 for ICT development projects (new data processing). Together we have managed peak demands with 200 servers and 40TB storage DATA DISSEMINATION AND PROCESSING Interoute provides scalable, powerful and secure storage and processing platforms Developers and ESA users can build their environments and tests applications in ESA dedicated platforms exploiting virtualization benefits (2,5 PB storage and 45 servers for Disharm and Elvis projects)
Reflection on Ground Segment Evolution Reference Paper (1) ESA GS is aware that the emergence of new system architectures and changes in consumption habits as well as the explosion of data sources and user communities represents a new challenge to its current data management procedures. ESA GS aims at operating as a System Architect for a pan-european dedicated platform for the dissemination, storage and processing of EO data. Intelligent dissemination of data needs a high performance, high capacity, secure and resilent network. Data should be placed in the most appropriate locations to reduce latency, but also to help adhere to European and national regulatory requirements (EU data to stay in EU) Standardization and rationalization of interfaces and data sources need a flexible, scalable platform that enables responsive allocation of resources in real time.
Reflection on Ground Segment Evolution Reference Paper (2) The ability to access diverse space data archives, of large volumes of data, the use of standardised forms of data query, retrieval, formats and data exchange methods will be central to these tasks. Attention should be given to platforms offering novel methods able to cope with the big data challenge (Earth Observation-2015- LEIT SPACE Programme) ESA GS should aim at developing a Large Virtual Infrastructure Platform spanning across projects, programs and platforms that can be harmonized and streamlined to reduce duplication of infrastructures and archives while improving efficiency and synergies The Large Virtual Infrastructure Platform should allow ESA GS to scale almost in real time, to maintain control over the data while assuring easy accessible interfaces to user communities The success of the GS evolution process should start from capitalizing on assets and capabilities already available to ESA, some of which are provided by Interoute.

Conclusions Scale Interoute s high capacity low latency networked cloud enables data to be held or distributed to the locations where it makes most sense for users to access it. Performance - The ability to keep data, resources and analytics tools within a secure, wide area private cloud environment and move essential elements within the distributed cloud environment to be closer to users is key to ensuring high performance. Data Compliance - Network and data centre ownership and control ensures that data that needs to stays in Europe. Flexibility - Interoute s IaaS approach to cloud ensures flexible scalability to meet user demand and manage peaks in demand for resources and capacity. Teamwork - Interoute applies the ITIL Process of Demand Management and is ready to work on a daily basis with ESA to analyse any type of current and future resource demands, and to deploy any requests on the existing platforms. ESA GS has the complete vision on Europe s EO new programs and the opportunity to become the System Architect of a innovative Large Virtual Infrastructure Platform. Interoute has both the physical and virtual technological infrastructures as well as the expertise and skills to support ESA GS in the transition towards a service oriented approach.
