FishMeter User Manual version 1.6 Page 3 of 16 1. Introduction Scantrol FishMeter is an electronic fish measuring board for measurement of length, and recording weight, sex, and other fish sampling data. Scantrol FishMeter is developed in close contact with the users to satisfy their demanding requirements for functionality and flexibility. Scantrol Fishmeter can be used in fishlab, or in the harsh environment on a ships deck. With Scantrol FishMeter you can measure fish length from 1 mm to 2m. You can define 100 different species that can be selected from function keys on the measuring board. For each species you can measure length, and you can record up to 40 additional parameters. You can define these additional parameters in a palette in the FishMeter PC-software. Here you can also set up the sequence of the recordings, and the FishMeter will then instruct you to enter data in the correct sequence. You can have two electronic scales connected to the board simultaneously. You can have one scale for single fish and one for total or sample weights. The recordings of the weights can be done either by a function key or as a part of the measuring sequence defined in the palette. If you want to identify or split fish samples with a code, you can either enter a serial number or a lot number from the FishMeter s numeric keys. Scantrol FishMeter includes a display unit, which displays what you are recording when you are measuring fish. Here you can read the selected species and the length of the fish, together with serial and lot numbers. Scantrol FishMeter includes a PC-compatible software package. You can use this software to configure the FishMeter, to transfer data from the FishMeter to a PC, and to convert recorded data to a format that is suitable for your application (e.g. EXCEL format). Before you can start using the FishMeter, you must go in to the configuration menu and define what species you want to work on, and also define a measuring palette and a measuring sequence for each species. The measuring palette is a selection of user defined parameters which can be recorded for each species in a eligibility sequence. When you have set up the configuration you can transfer it to the FishMeter and start logging. You can now disconnect the PC and let the FishMeter store the recordings. If you keep the PC connected you can operate in real time mode. Data will then be transferred, displayed and stored on the PC as they are recorded and stored by the FishMeter. Scantrol FishMeter has a local memory with capacity to store 10,000 operations.

FishMeter User Manual version 1.6 Page 4 of 16 2. Principle of operation Scantrol FishMeter consists of a display unit and the measuring board. Both units are waterproof and made to operate in harsh environment. The display unit, which is connected to the board, read, store and display all recorded data. The electronics in the measuring board consist of an array of magnetic sensors that are mounted under the yellow line (magnetic line) in the center of the measuring board. All operations on the FishMeter are done by a small magnet that can either be attached to the finger or held in the hand (see Appendix ). When you place the magnet on the center line, the FishMeter will detect this signal and interpret it as a fish length if you are in LENGTH mode, or as a function or numeric key entry if you are in FUNCTION mode. To ensure stable and reliable operation, the magnet must be held in position for a certain duration of time before FishMeter detects a valid entry. This time can be adjusted from 0.1 to 0.9 seconds in a menu on the display unit. The FishMeter gives a short beep and a red flash when an entry has been accepted. When the FishMeter is measuring in a defined sequence and a parameter different from Length is entered, the FishMeter gives a double beep and only a short beep when a Length is entered. This is because the operator should know when a Length measurement should be taken. You can divide the type of entries into four groups: LENGTH RECORDING FUNCTIONS KEYS NUMERICAL VALUE WEIGHT INPUT

FishMeter User Manual version 1.6 Page 5 of 16 3. Operation There are two basic keys that are important for the operation of Scantrol FishMeter: Length selection key and the Function selection key. To do length measurement on the measuring board, the magnet should first be placed over the yellow spot on the Length selection key to set the FishMeter to LENGTH mode. The next is to place the magnet behind the fish tail until a peep and a flash is generated on the display unit. The fish length is then recorded and stored in the memory (see fig 2). The fish length is always rounded off to the nearest ½ cm for fish smaller than 50 cm and 1 cm for fish longer than 50 cm e.g. 45.6 cm is 45.5 and 60.9 cm is 60. Before any of the function keys can be operated, the magnet first has to be placed on the Function selection key to set FishMeter to FUNCTION mode. FishMeter will remain in FUNCTION mode until Length selection key is operated. How to select a specie? To select a specie first place the magnet on the function selection key and then select one of the species keys ( 1 to 20). The selected name and number of the specie is displayed in the window. If species between 20 and 100 should be selected, first enter the specie number by the numerical keyboard followed by one of the specie keys. To continue with length measurement for that specie place the magnet on the length selection key. How to change LOT number? To change a LOT number for the selected specie, place the magnet on the function selection key and than select LOT number key enter on of the numerical keys followed by enter key. To continue length measurement press length selection key.

FishMeter User Manual version 1.6 Page 6 of 16 How to work with a measure palette? When the measuring board is configured to record parameter in palette sequence e.g. LENGTH, WEIGHT, AGE, SEX. The operator must first place the magnet on the length selection key. The operation window will then display LENGTH, that means that the operator must place the magnet behind the fish to record the length. The window will than display WEIGHT, which means that the fish must to be placed on an electronic scale connected to the measuring board for automatically recording, or the value can be entered from the numerical keys followed by the enter key. Then the window will display AGE and the operator must enter a code from the numerical keys followed by the enter key. Finally the window is displaying SEX, the operator can press male key or female key, the code will be 1 or 2. The operator can instead of the male key or female key enter a numerical value from the numerical keys. If the operator have configured the FishMeter in the sequence configuration to measure the parameters WEIGHT, AGE AND SEX only for 2 fish in each length group and the groups is filled up. It is possible to continue the measurement, by going to the MENU and sub menu MEASURMENT MODES an set the FULL SEQUENCE to 1. Then the FishMeter will start asking for WEIGHT, AGE AND SEX again. The mode will be turned off by selecting the specie again. In the other way if the parameters WEIGHT, AGE AND SEX is defined to be measured for every fish, then the operator can turn off the parameters one by one with only pressing the enter key without any input. The mode will be turned off by selecting the specie key again. How to record weight of a sample of fish? If the operator want to register the weight as a sample weight first place the magnet on the function selection key, then select sample weight key. If an electronic scale is connected to the FishMeter, fish weights will automatically be recorded on the FishMeter as a sample weight. The operator can also enter the value from the numerical keys. The measuring board is recording sample weight until function selection key is pressed again or if Total weight key is pressed. How to record a weight of the total quantity of fish? If the operator want to register the weight as a total weight, first place the magnet on the function selection key, then select total weight key. If an electronic scale is connected to the FishMeter, the quantity of fish will automatically be recorded on the FishMeter as a total weight. The operator can also enter the value from the numerical keys.the measuring board is recording total weight until function selection key is pressed again or if sample weight key is pressed.

FishMeter User Manual version 1.6 Page 7 of 16 How to record weight of a single fish? If the operator want to register the weight as a single weight first place the magnet on the function selection key, then select weight key. If an electronic scale is connected to the FishMeter, the fish weight will automatically be recorded on the FishMeter as a weight. The operator can also enter the value from the numerical keys. The measuring board is recording sample weight until function selection key is pressed again. A better way to record single weights, is to choose single weight as part of the palette the operator will save operations see How to work with a measure palette. How to measure in cm? First place the magnet on the function selection key, then press the cm key. The measuring board will automatically go to the length mode and all fish lengths will be measured with ½ cm resolution from 1 to 50 cm and 1 cm resolution from 50 to 100 cm. How to measure in mm? First place the magnet on the function selection key, then press the mm key. The measuring board will automatically go to the length mode. The operator should measure manually the length of the fish on the mm scale and record the length of the fish with the magnet on the main scale. E.g. To measure a 70 mm long fish place the magnet on the 70 cm mark. How to measure fish longer than 1m? Place the magnet on the function selection key, then press +100 key. The measuring board will automatically go to the length mode. Mark the fish at the 100 cm line, move the fish and use the line from 100 cm and below to see the actual length of the fish. To record the length of e.g. 135 cm, place the magnet on the 35 cm mark. To go out of this mode, choose the function selection key and press +100 key again. How to delete an operation? To delete last operation place the magnet on the delete key and the last entry is deleted. It is also possible to edit and change values for earlier measurements: Select the function selection key and use the arrow keys to choose the operation you want to change, then enter a new value. The display will show EDIT VALUE.To get out, press function selection key. How to go into the menu? Place the magnet on the function selection key, than select menu key. FishMeter Software Manual version 1.6 Page 3 of 14 1. Introduction Scantrol FishMeter includes the PC compatible software package FMS01. This software is used for setting up Scantrol FishMeter, and for retrieval of recorded information from Scantrol FishMeter. You can set up Scantrol FishMeter to suit your sampling application by using the Configuration Menu. Here you can define what species you are going to work with, what measurements and recordings that are to be taken for each specie, and the sequence of these recordings. This information is transferred to Scantrol FishMeter via the PC s RS232 interface. When the operator is ready to do the sampling, Scantrol FishMeter will instruct the operator to do the recordings in the specified sequence. If you for example want to measure length and weight, and to record sex and age for all species, you must first go into the Configuration Menu to select the recordings and the recording sequence. When the configuration has been transferred to Scantrol FishMeter, the operator will be asked to first enter the length, then the weight, the sex, and the age. This is repeated for all individual species. You will also need the FMS01 software when you are retrieving recorded information from Scantrol FishMeter, and if you want to convert the recorded data to either an EXCEL- compatible file or to a formatted ASCII file. When Scantrol FishMeter has received configuration information, it will operate independent of the PC. The RS232 line can be disconnected, and recordings can be made in the field independent of the PC. All recordings will be stored in the Scantrol FishMeter s memory until they are transferred to a PC and stored in a file. The Scantrol FishMeter s memory contents will be retained even when power is disconnected. 2. Software Installation Scantrol FishMeter software FMS01 can be installed on any PC running WINDOWS operating system (95, 98, NT, 2000) with minimum 16Mb ram, and one RS232 port (COM1). Install DISK 1 in the floppy drive and run the installation program: SETUP.EXE (Select Run on the Start Menu, and run a:\setup.exe ). After the installation procedure is finished, make sure that the two files DEFAULT.CFG and FISHMETR.INI are included in the FishMeter directory. If the files are missing, they must be copied from one of the installation disks. The Default.cfg contains a default configuration which will be copied to the program when started. The Fishmetr.ini contains the species which shows in the combo boxes in species configuration. This file can be edit in a standard editor and the operator can add their own species.

FishMeter Software Manual version 1.6 Page 4 of 14 3. Scantrol FishMeter Window After the Scantrol FishMeter software has been successfully installed, you can start the program by selecting the FishMeter symbol in your PROGRAMS menu. You can run the program without connecting Scantrol FishMeter to the PC. When you start the program, the Scantrol FishMeter Window will be opened: In the Scantrol FishMeter Window you will find a menu and a toolbar that you can use for configuration and communication with Scantrol FishMeter. You can Add, Clear or Edit a line to the Palette in this window. Each line in the Palette consists of four parameters: Text. A description of the measurement. This text is displayed on the local FishMeter display, and will also appear in the output data files. Datatype. A definition of how the data is to be entered into the FishMeter. There are four possible datatypes: Length. Data is entered as a length oh the FishMeter length scale. Weight 1. Weight data is received on FishMeters weight input no. 1. This is a serial RS232 line where an external scale can be connected. Weight 2. Weight data is received on FishMeters weight input no. 2. This is a serial RS232 line where an external scale can be connected. Manual. Data is entered as a numeric value on the FishMeter numeric keys.

FishMeter Software Manual version 1.6 Page 10 of 14 Format. The number of digits that are required when data is entered manually. You must specify the number of digits left and right of the decimal point. Enter. Specifies if the ENTER key has to be operated to record the measurement. If ENTER is off, the FishMeter will record the measurement when the correct number of digits has been entered. If you for example are recording FAT as a value between 0 and 9, you can either just push the correct numeric key (ENTER= off), or push the numeric key followed by enter (ENTER=on). The two bottoms Add STUV Palette and Del STUV Palette, is used to add and delete a palette with unique names used by the Regfish program. When this bottoms are used you are not allowed to change the text name in the palette line. The STUV palette is only used when logged data should be converted to a Regfish file. The Palette can contain maximum 40 different measurements.

FishMeter Software Manual version 1.6 Page 11 of 14 Sequence In the Sequence Window you can define what measurements you will take for each specie, and the sequence of these measurement. First you select a species in the Species field. Then you can define the measurement sequence by selecting measurements from the Palette Window. You can choose if you want to do the measurement on all samples, or on a limited number of samples. In the Measurement Criteria Fields you can specify the number of measurements you will take. If you are working with length groups, you can specify a number of measurements in each length group. In the example above you can see the measurement sequence for cod: The first measurement is Ind. Length that will be entered on Scantrol FishMeter s length scale. The second measurement is Ind. Weight. The weight will be transferred from a scale connected to Scantrol FishMeter s weight input no. 1. The third measurement is Sex. Sex will be entered by pressing either the female button or male button on Scantrol FishMeter. Sex will be recorded only for the 10 first samples with length > 25 cm. You can also define a Standard Sequence (in the Species Field). You can then copy the standard sequence to individual species, or use the standard sequence for all species.

FishMeter Software Manual version 1.6 Page 12 of 14 Measurement Series Measurement Series is a reference number that identifies the recorded information. The Series number can also be change each time the configuration is downloaded. The Measurement Series can also be set directly on Scantrol FishMeter, and will be used as reference in all output files.

FishMeter Software Manual version 1.6 Page 13 of 14 Measurement Board Scantrol FishMeter has two inputs that is intended for receiving weight information from fish scales. You can setup Scantrol FishMeter to interface to most standard scales by setting communication parameters (baudrate, parity, and databits) and dataformat. Information on this should be found in the scale s manual. The data string from the scale can contain 80 characters. To select the weight information in the string, you can set Data field number, Data field delimiter and Decimal point character. Save Configuration When you have finished setting up the measuring sequence, you must press the OK button to return to the Scantrol FishMeter Window. You should then the save the new configuration in a file. Operate the Save Configuration to File button, and select the name of the configuration file. The standard extension for a FishMeter configuration file is.fmc.

FishMeter Software Manual version 1.6 Page 14 of 14 Send Configuration To FishMeter Before you transfer any new configuration information to Scantrol FishMeter, you must clear the contents of Scantrol FishMeter s memory. Operate Clear FishMeter Memory button to clear both configuration information and recorded data. Note: Before you operate the Clear FishMeter Memory button, you must make sure that you have retrieved all data stored in Scantrol FishMeter s memory. You can now send the new configuration to Scantrol FishMeter by operating the Transfer Configuration to FishMeter button. As soon as the configuration data has been transmitted, Scantrol FishMeter is ready to work with the new settings. 4. Recording Of Data There are two ways of reading information from Scantrol FishMeter. You can instruct Scantrol FishMeter to transmit data to the PC as data is entered by the operator. Real time data is displayed in the List Of Operations in the FishMeter Window. This mode is called Real Time Logging. Alternatively you can read the complete memory contents from Scantrol FishMeter. This mode is called Load Data from FishMeter or Load and Convert to When selecting both modes, you must first specify a file name for the datafile. The standard extension for a FishMeter data file is.fmd. 5. Data Files All data recorded by Scantrol FishMeter is stored in a FishMeter datafile with a filename specified by the operator. This is an ASCII text file that can be opened in a standard editor like Notepad. To make the recorded FishMeter data more easily available for the user, we have included several conversion routines. The conversion routines included in this version are for converting to Excel file format and to a formatted ASCII text files. You will find these conversion routines in the Convert Data to Formatted Output File.
