Setting Up the IDEXX CardioPet* ECG Device and Software Setting Up the CardioPet ECG Device 1. Insert two AA batteries (included). CAUTION: Never use rechargeable batteries, which may cause a fire hazard. Always use nonrechargeable alkaline batteries. 2. Attach a clip to each of the four cables. 3. Plug the other (single) end of the cable into the ECG device. Downloading and Installing the CardioPet Software Instructions for downloading and installing the CardioPet software were included in an email you received from IDEXX. If you need help, please contact IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants at 1-800-726-1212. Connecting the Bluetooth* Adapter if Needed Follow the instructions below to determine whether you need to use the Bluetooth* adapter and driver sent to you by IDEXX. Newer computers usually do not need the adapter (Bluetooth technology is already installed). To determine whether you need to use the Bluetooth adapter: 1. In the taskbar at the bottom of your computer screen, look for the Bluetooth icon. You may need to click a small arrow on the task bar to see all available icons. 2. If the icon is present, then Bluetooth technology is installed, you do not need the Bluetooth adapter; continue with the next section. 3. If the Bluetooth icon is not present, follow instructions in the Bluetooth package (sent by IDEXX) to install the Bluetooth driver and adapter before continuing with the next section. IMPORTANT: If you need the Bluetooth adapter, make sure the adapter is connected to your computer whenever you use the ECG device. CardioPet ECG Device Setup Guide 2
Pairing the CardioPet Software with Your Computer IMPORTANT: If your computer is running the Windows* XP operating system, contact IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants at 1-800-726-1212 before following the steps below. To enable a connection to a Bluetooth device: 1. Open the Windows Start menu, and type Bluetooth in the Search box. 2. Click Change Bluetooth settings. 3. In the Bluetooth Settings box, select the Options tab, and then select the check boxes to allow Bluetooth devices both to find the computer and to connect to the computer. 4. Click OK. To pair the ECG device with your computer: 1. On the back of the ECG device, note the 4-digit paircode ; you will need it in Step 6. 2. Turn on the ECG device. Note: The device turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity. 3. From the Windows Start menu, select Devices and Printers. (Depending on your operating system, you may need to select Control Panel > Devices and Printers.) 4. Click Add a device. The software detects the ECG device, and displays its name, which starts with CP. 5. Click the ECG device name, and then click Next. In a few moments your computer connects to the device. You are asked to enter a pairing code. 6. Enter the pairing code from Step 1, click Next, and then click OK. Note: If you see an error message, you may have waited too long to enter the pairing code. Try repeating Steps 5 and 6. If you still see an error message, contact IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants at 1-800-726-1212. A message tells you when the device has been added. This can take several minutes. 7. Click Close to close the message box. 8. In the Devices and Printers window, right-click the ECG device name, and select Properties. 9. Select the Hardware tab, and note the Port number; you will need it in Step 13. 10. Click OK to close the window. 11. Double-click the CardioPet icon on your desktop to start the software. 12. From the Settings menu, select ECG Options 13. Next to Serial Communication, use the up/down arrows to select the port number you noted above. 14. In the VetMedStat Account area, enter your IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants account number in the Username box and your account password in the Password box. Note: Your account number is three letters followed by four digits. If you need help, contact IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants at 1-800-726-1212. 15. Click OK You can now view and record ECGs. Tip: To test the system, in the CardioPet software click Start ECG. Even though clips are not attached to a patient, you should see six leads displayed as either straight or curved lines. Click Start ECG again to stop the ECG stream. Pairing the CardioPet Software with an Android* Tablet or Android* Phone By using an Android* tablet or smart phone, you can use the ECG device in any location. To pair the ECG device with the Android CardioPet app: IMPORTANT: Make sure you have closed the CardioPet software on the Windows computer; you can pair only one device at a time. 1. On the back of the ECG device, note the 4-digit paircode ; you will need it in Step 8 below. 2. Turn on the ECG device when you are ready to begin the pairing. Note: The device turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity. 3. Turn on the Android device, and make sure you have a Bluetooth connection (check the settings option on your device). 4. 6. Tap Device. The software detects the ECG device and displays the device name (it starts with CP ). 7. Tap the ECG device name. You are prompted to enter the device s PIN, which is the pairing code. 8. Enter the pairing code from Step 1, and tap Done. 9. Enter your IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants account number in the Username box, and click OK. (Your account number is three letters followed by four digits.) If you need help, contact IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants at 1-800-726-1212. 10. Enter your account password in the Password box, and click OK. The Settings box should now look similar to this: 11. Tap the back arrow to display the previous window. You can now view and record ECGs. Tip: To test the system, tap and then tap Start. Using the ECG Device to View, Capture, and Transmit ECGs Recording an ECG Using Your PC IMPORTANT: Make sure that the CardioPet software and the CardioPet app are not running at the same time in the same vicinity. The ECG device can communicate with only one computer or tablet at a time. To record an ECG using your PC: 1. Turn on the ECG device. Note: The device turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity. 2. Double-click the CardioPet icon on your desktop to start the software. 3. Click Patient, and then click New. 4. Enter the patient and client information. 5. Click Save, and then click OK. 6. Prepare the animal, and attach the leads. 7. Click Start ECG to see the live ECG stream. 8. Correct any of the following ECG problems: QRS waves that are crowded or overlapping between leads. The gain may be too high or the paper feed too slow. Recommended values are 10 mm/mv gain and 50 mm/s feed. Flat lines. Make sure all leads are attached; try adding more alcohol to the clip locations. Blurry lines. One or more clips may be missing. 9. When you are satisfied with the ECG quality, click record. The software displays six leads for 30 seconds and then saves the recording. 10. Click Start ECG again to stop the ECG stream. 11. When ready to upload the ECG to IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants, click one of these buttons: a. Upload and Finish Now The VetMedStat* web site opens so you can complete and submit the case. b. Upload and Finish Later The ECG is uploaded to the VetMedStat web site, but you must log in later to finish submitting the case. c. Upload to IDEXX-PACS software From the IDEXX-PACS software you can submit the ECG to IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants along with associated radiographs. You must have a DICOM license from IDEXX. Contact IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants at 1-800-726-1212 for information. Recording an ECG Using Your Android Mobile Device To record an ECG using the Android mobile device: 1. Turn on the ECG device. Note: The device turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity. 2. Tap to start the CardioPet app. 3. Tap, and then tap New Patient. 4. (Required) In the Patient box, enter the patient name and the owner last name. 5. (Recommended) In the other boxes, enter a patient ID, an owner first name, and an owner last name; you may need to swipe up to see all the boxes. The Patient ID is used to match x-rays and ECGs with patient records in both VetMedStat and IDEXX-PACS software. 6. Tap OK. 7. Prepare the animal, and attach the leads. 8. Tap, and then tap Start to see the live ECG stream. 9. Review the quality of the ECG. See Step 8 in the previous procedure for tips. 10. When ready to record, tap Record. The software displays three leads for 30 seconds and then saves the recording. 11. Tap, and then tap Stop. 12. When ready to upload the ECG to IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants, tap one of these buttons: a. Upload and Finish Now The VetMedStat website opens so you can complete and submit the case. b. ECG Controls in Your CardioPet PC Software and App Where to find PC controls: ECG viewing and recording Toolbar buttons. Hover the mouse pointer over each button to learn what the button does. Where to find app controls: Completing the Case in the VetMedStat* Software If you clicked the Upload and Finish Later button, you must complete the case. To complete the case in the VetMedStat software: 1. Log on to vetmedstat.com. 2. Under Attention: Cases for You to Complete, select the patient name. 3. Verify the patient information and update it as needed. 4. Select Services, and then enter the patient history. 5. If this is a comparison study, on the Attachments page, be sure to attach any relevant documents older than one year. 6. Click Submit to send the case to a cardiologist. The resulting frequency range depends on the specific filters implemented in the software. Cleaning and Maintaining the ECG Device Clean the exterior of the device using a paper towel moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Remove the batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period of time.
