1 INTRODUCTION The electronic weight indicator model δ.5 is a compact microprocessor based unit, specifically designed for use on systems utilizing strain gauge load cells. The standard configuration includes: 1. High accuracy analog to digital converter (max 65.000 internal counts). 2. Front panel with 6 digit LΕD display, 5 key membrane keyboard, and two annunciator LED s. 3. Non volatile memory for system parameters and calibration data. 4. A serial RS232C port for connection to printer or computer. 5. The microprocessor technology allow the instrument to perform in software all measuring functions, operator input-output, automatic controls and sequences necessary for the operation of weighing systems. 6. The setting of the unit is performed through a guided keyboard operation, enabling the adaptation to operating environment and system requirements. Use U to turn POWER ON/OFF. 2 SPECIFICATIONS 2.1 ENVIRONMENTAL AND ELECTRICAL CONSIDERATIONS AMBIENT TEMPERATURE Storage - 10 o C to + 70 o C Operating - 10 o C to + 40 o C Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. HUMIDITY AIR VIBRATION PROTECTION ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS POWER SUPPLY INCOMING AND OUTGOING SIGNALS 40% to 90% RH (non condensing) The surrounding air should be dust free and not contain any corrosive gases or materials which could adversely affect the equipment. Severe vibration may affect the accuracy of weighing and damage electric / electronic components. IP 40 for front panel. IP 55 and IP 65 upon request. Heavy electrical equipment should not be installed close to the weighing equipment. LED MODEL * 7.5-10 V AC or 8 12 VDC/5VA * Consumption 3W max. (300mA / 6 LOAD CELLS) LCD MODEL * 9.5VAC / 7.2VA (35mA / 1 LOAD CELL) Relays and contactors connected to weighing equipment must have reliable and effective interference suppression. This also applies to other equipment located within a distance of 3m from weighing equipment. Cabling must be performed according to normal practice. NOTES WELDING on or in the vicinity of weighing equipment is strictly prohibited. STATIC loads, caused by thunderstorms, must be prevented from developing by use of reliable lightning conductors. 2.2 INSTALLATION MOUNTING The mounting location must be such that the instrument is not subject to excessive vibrations, heat or humidity. Avoid direct sunlight on the front of the instrument. The unit must be installed at the right height, allowing an easy reading of the display and keyboard operation. WIRING All connections to the instrument are made through the rear panel connectors. AC POWER As the instrument is computer controlled it requires clean power for reliable operation. AC power supplied should come from a source that is isolated from other process equipment. LEON ENGINEERING recommends the use of a power conditioner for noise attenuation and voltage regulation with a capacity of approximately 10VA. 3 FRONT PANEL SURVEY DISPLAY 6 digit LED for the display of measured weight (gross or net), operator and error messages. Digit height approx. 14mm. Over-range is indicated by vvvvvv on the weight display. Under-range is indicated by uuuuuu on the weight display. Center of zero is indicated by a small zero on the leftmost digit. The weight display is also used for error messages and operator prompts. NET INDICATOR It lights up when the scale has been tared and the display is in NET mode. MOTION INDICATOR It lights up when the scale is in motion. The battery model is equipped with an LCD display with a character height of 16mm and the additional DELTA 5 ELECTRONIC WEIGHT INDICATOR REFERENCE MANUAL 05.11.02 δ.5rm_3 3 6 of 21

annunciator for the battery which blinks when the battery charge falls below 20% of capacity. U POWER ON/OFF KEY (TOGGLE) Turns the unit on and off. O ZERO / CLEAR ERROR KEY - It is used to reset the weight display to zero. Zeroing will be effective only if the scale is stable, in gross mode and the weight is within + 10% of max weighing capacity. - If an error is present on the display press this key to acknowledge. T NET / GROSS KEY (TOGGLE)/ FUNCTION MENU - It is used to tare the scale. Taring will be effective only if the scale is stable and within the weighing capacity. - If the scale has already been tared depression of the key will cause the tare to be cancelled and the weight display return to Gross mode. - If the key is kept depressed for more than 3 sec the function menu is entered. When the display shows Fn 00, press P to return to weight display. The function menu is used by service personnel for maintenance purposes. Refer to SET UP & CALIBRATION chapter for details. Y TOTAL / BATTERY CHARGE - It is used to display the current accumulated total. Press Y again to display the number of weighings. Press Y again to end the total display or Press P to print/delete the total. - For the battery powered LCD models if the key is pressed for more than 3 sec, the remaining capacity of the internal battery is displayed as a percentage of the maximum (i.e. full capacity = 100% ). When the battery is being charged an indication of 150-250% may be displayed. P PRINT - ACCUMULATE It is used to transmit weight data to peripheral devices via the serial port. The transmitted weight will also be accumulated. The weight will be printed only if it is stable and within the weighing range of the indicator. Printing and / or accumulation will take place only if enabled in set up. The weight data printed is selectable in SET UP. Refer to SET UP & CALIBRATION for details. 4 POWER-UP & RUNNING When the δ.5 is powered up, a self test routine is initiated during which the following data is displayed. 1. Program Number The software identification code is displayed momentarily e.g. P 051 2. Program Date The date of issue of the software version is displayed momentarily e.g. 26.09.00 (day - month - year) 3. Display segment test. All display segments are turned on then off for 2 sec. 4. The display shows the weight on the platform, then ZERO. If this weight is within + 10% of scale capacity it will be zeroed automatically. If the scale can not be zeroed Err 15 is displayed. Unload the scale and press O key momentarily to zero the scale. 5. Power up the printer if one is connected to the δ.5. The unit is ready for operation. 5 ERRORS If an error occurs during the operation, it will be displayed in the form Err xx, where xx is the Error code. Program is halted. Press O momentarily to acknowledge the error and proceed as indicated in the error operator response. ERROR DISPLAY POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION TO BE TAKEN Err 01 MCU ROM : Faulty FLASH ROM Contact manufacturer. Err 02 MCU RAM : Faulty RAM Contact manufacturer. Err 04 CALIBRATION DATA : Faulty EEPROM Contact manufacturer. Err 05 Scale weight out of range. Check loadcell, cables, connectors, A/D converter. Err 15 System has been initialised due to power failure or soft reset. Zero scale. Err 20 Err 69 PRINTER IS NOT ON-LINE. Either not connected or out of paper or failed. TOTALISER OVERFLOW. Because totalisers have not been cleared for long time. Check printer, cables. Print / clear totalisers. Overflow is not critical, but remember that 1 total capacity must be added to the indication, each time an overflow occurs. 6 SERIAL OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS This port is used to connect to serial printers or personal computers. Data output and handshake requirements are defined by SETUP. Wait until the animal is on the scale and the weight is stable. Press P. The display shows Alt and after a short time (depends on xx) the average weight of the animal. Press P again to print / totalise the displayed weight or press O to abort. If no key is pressed after 4 sec the weight will be printed totalised automatically. 6.2 CONTINUOUS WEIGHT OUTPUT ( 2400 baud) The indicated weight and status information is transmitted continuously. No handshake is required. 7 MAINTENANCE The unit does not require any routine maintenance. It may be necessary to perform periodic checks of the scale calibration due to mechanical reasons. The frequency of the calibration checks depends on the operating condition and on the required measuring accuracy. It may occur, in exceptional conditions, that the unit locks on a wrong memory location and it is not possible to restart because the keyboard is not operative. To restart it is necessary to switch the power OFF then ON again. 7.1 SERVICE - There are no serviceable parts. The unit must be serviced by trained personnel only. The user may check loadcell connection and power supply. - LOAD CELLS Load cells are reliable and very rarely present errors. Check input and output resistance, and resistance between any terminal and shield. Check loadcell connection and cable. - POWER SUPPLY. Check adapter or AC/DC power supply. Check PCB mounted resettable fuse on main board. LEON ENGINEERING maintains a fully trained staff of field service engineers who provide: - Technical assistance by telephone. - Application assistance on-site or by telephone. - Trouble shooting on-site. - Warranty (replacement) or spare parts assistance. - Training on-site or at out service centre. - Equipment updates to our latest configuration. 8 SET UP AND CALIBRATION To prevent unauthorised calibration a calibration lock facility is provided. This is a jumper placed inside the unit on PCB (JP 1). With this jumper inserted the user may only change the SETUP 2. Parameter and Calibration menus can not be accessed. δ.5 units are shipped with CAL LOCK jumper not inserted. To calibrate the unit follow the instructions below. - Connect power to the instrument and press U to start. - Allow 10 min for warm up. - Press the button U twice to turn the indicator OFF and then ON again. - When all display segments light up (8.8.8.8.8.8.) press the P key momentarily followed by T key also momentarily. - Display shows SETUP2. Proceed with set up and calibration as described in the following pages. - After storage of calibration data open the unit and insert the CAL LOCK jumper. - Seal the unit. During SET UP, the four keys underneath the weight display are redefined as follows : O =BREAK T =NEXT Y =SCROLL P =ENTER Use Y to step through SETUP 2 Par CAL STORE INIT While displayed, each dialogue can be accessed with P. Dialogues PAR, CAL, INIT may be accessed only if calibration lock jumper on PCB 702 is not inserted. Two entry procedures are used. 1. SINGLE DIGIT ENTRY (0 or 1). Press Y to change value of digit and press P to accept entry and proceed to next parameter. 2. MULTI DIGIT ENTRY Press Y to increment flashing digit. 9 DIALOGUE Par (Scale Parameters) While in the Par menu use Y key to change value, T to change digit, P to accept entry and proceed to next step. 10 DIALOGUE CAL (Scale Calibration) Display shows Zero Press P to measure the dead load. Press Y to go to SPAN or press O to exit to CAL Display shows E Scl a reminder to empty the scale. Wait about 10 sec (depending on digital filter). Press P. Display counts down for about 10 sec (averages 64 samples) then it displays zero. Repeat the procedure if the zero point is not accurate. Press P to proceed. Display shows SPAn Press Y to go to dead Id. or press O to exit to CAL. Press P for SPAN calibration. Display shows C xxxxx where xxxxx = Maximum capacity of scale. Enter calibration weight, to be used. To enter use following keys : Y to increment flashing digit. T P to move 1 digit to the right. to accept value. Display shows Add Id a reminder to load the calibration weight on the platform. After loading, wait about 10 sec (depending on the digital filter). Press P. Display counts down for about 10 sec. Then it shows the calibration weight. Repeat the SPAN procedure if the calibration is not accurate. Calibration is complete but factors obtained are not protected in case of a mains failure.
