Non-linear Editing Systems A non-linear editing system is a program that accesses and manipulates video/audio data through random access memory. 14
This was previously known as real time editing, virtual, and electronic film editing back in the 1970s and 1980 s until the term nonlinear editing system was coined in 1991. 15
Nonlinear video editing permits users to skip to frames at will without physically needing to move a video tape, typically performed in the program s timeline 16
Non-linear editing systems provide a sharp contrast to older forms of video editing that required physically cutting, attaching, and layering actual film tape. Because no actual physical film is used while editing, non-linear editing is known as a nondestructive process. 17
Downsides exist: video quality is limited to the computer s hard drive and often has to be compressed, losing resolution, color quality, audio quality, long rendering times, and is susceptible to hard drive crashes. Video codecs:.avi (audio video interleave early Microsoft).wmv (windows media video modern Microsoft) MPEG-4 (ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group ) DivX Pro (DivX) QuickTime (Apple) 18
30 seconds of FRAPS recorded.avi video/audio in Minecraft: 639 MB 19
As computers continue to grow in processing power and hard drive space, some of these downsides become null. On the other hand, increased network connectivity might pose new risks. Old computer from 1999: 14 gigs hard drive space Current computer: 913 gigabytes hard drive space 700 megabytes/14 gigs = ~ %5 of hard drive space 700 megabytes/913 gigs = ~ %.07 of hard drive space 20
The CMX 600, generally considered the first nonlinear editing system, was introduced in 1971 (costing $250,000) using mostly hardware but has moved almost completely toward software as computers became more powerful. Now a nonlinear video editing system comes free on most operating systems. EditDroid by Droid Works (early 1980s) CMX 600 21
Most (if not all) modern video editing software is non-linear: Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas Apple Final Cut Pro Microsoft Movie Maker Adobe Premier Avid Pro Tools 22
Several more nonlinear video editing systems: Sony Vegas Lightworks imovie OpenShot Video Editor Roxio Montage Extreme 23
Sound Background music Foley body sound Sound effect Importing sound files Recording from microphone 24
Background Music Background music creates a story-telling atmosphere of a movie. It can be a song e.g. music video, or Surround sound effect e.g. sound of ocean or heavy traffic. When using background music mixed with other sounds, make sure that the listener focused on the right one. http://s3.artbeats.com/assets/written_tutorials/pdfs/ clearly_mixed.pdf 25
Foley body sound Creating sound effect which you want to exaggerate in the scene, say, heart beat, gasp, foot step. Foley sound can be disassociated from the scene. You can create sounds that not exist in real world. Star war sound effects http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmfzc2iyx8g 26
Sound Effect Use the combination of different sounds to create the sound effect. Here are two examples I made. Example #1 : Background music: Jon Schmidt Love Story meet Viva La Vida Sound Effect: Heavy Traffic 27
Example #2: Sound Effect Foley Sound: heat beat, high heel walking; Sound Effect: electric buzz with water dripping, creaking metal 28
How to do it? Create a suitable format of your movie considering your material. Import sound and video clip that you want to edit into the project file. 29
How to do it? Drag the video clip and sound track into different channel. Set the timeline. 30
How to do it? To add key frame while combining the sound effect together, use the effect panel. 31
How to do it? Tips: When there are only 5 different channel of sounds, if you want to add more sound tracks in the different channels, you should use other software to mix them first. When export to video files, make sure that the timeline is correct. 32
Example 2: How to do it? Same steps importing sounds and drag them into right channels. 33
How to do it? Add preprocessed special effect into your sound track. Audio effects contains Bandpass, Denoiser, Highpass, Lowpass. Not very user friendly.. 34
How to do it? Use the audio mixer to emphasis on the sound effects and you can adjust the left/ right channel to create a more like 3D sound effect. 35
How to do it? 36
Importing Sound Files Use the Media Browser tab Drag audio files to working project frame Similar to adding video files Add file to an audio track on timeline Mix audio tracks, add audio effects, etc. 37

Compositing Compositing is a commonly-used technique in movies, TV shows, etc. Used well before modern greenscreening Allows complex scenes to be broken down to more manageable elements http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/file:keaton_playhouse_1921.jpg 43
Render Layers Feature of Maya to imitate digital matting Windows -> General Editors -> Display Layer Editor Allows rendering of individual layers instead of everything in the scene No compositing feature in Premiere Must be done in After Effects or similar 44
