BT Connect Acceleration Accelerating business performance BT Connect Networks that think
BT Connect Acceleration can improve the performance of our customers business applications across global networks by up to 200 times whilst reducing network bandwidth demands by typically 30%-60%. The impact can be transformational, enabling our customers to move to consolidated IT models and cloud services. Connect Acceleration can improve application performance for customers who have already tried this and suffer from severe application delays. Return on investment in 7 months Connect Acceleration can help customers to achieve key strategic goals and can provide return on investment within 7 months. Connect Acceleration is a fully managed service from BT offering lower total cost of ownership, improved usage of bandwidth, and greater business efficiency due to improved performance of applications. The managed acceleration service from BT includes project management, which took care of everything from ordering and shipping the hardware to dealing with customs issues. BT also organised and supervised local engineering teams carrying out the installations. BT also provides managed reports. The latest BT optimisation reports show that a massive data reduction of 76 per cent has already been achieved. That figure is likely to be exceeded because, although we re focusing on file server and email traffic right now, we re planning to extend the solution to other applications Christoph Pscherer, IT Manager, Siemens Connect Acceleration enables companies to: Accelerate all TCP Applications for remote sites and mobile users Optimise bandwidth Centralise data and consolidate infrastructure. Case Studies BT has a number of customers using Connect Acceleration from different industry sectors including Siemens, Paperlinx, Manpower and Atradius. Business benefits Some of the benefits of Connect Acceleration are highlighted in the table below: Challenge Consolidation of IT Improve user productivity Maximise investments in network infrastructure Accelerate disaster recovery Boost productivity of mobile workers Business benefit Enable the moving of storage and servers from remote sites to central data centers without compromising end user performance. Reduce transaction times by 20 seconds and save 000k s a month in costs. Make better use of existing bandwidth and reduce by an average of 60% and save 000k s a month in costs. Speed up disaster recovery processes and reduce back up times by seven times. Accelerate application performance for mobile users so they can gain faster access to applications on the move. SharePoint data over the WAN was reduced by 85 percent and file download times were reduced from 30 seconds to less than five seconds. HTTP, email and SAP traffic reduced by over 65 percent. Bandwidth reduction also helped save WAN upgrade costs by 300k. BT managed service BT Connect Acceleration is a comprehensive managed service that is part of the award winning Connect Applications portfolio of services. Monthly Reports BT allows global customers to outsource the operations of WAN acceleration and receive monthly reports documenting global performance of critical applications. As part of the service every month the customer will receive a report from a BT analyst analysing the application performance trends and the levels of performance improvement. This provides ongoing insight and advice on the customer s environment to help them make better business and technical decisions. The monthly report will be a detailed graphical report broken down per appliance and application with a graphical summary page which will include appliance health, performance summary and helpdesk alert reports. All these details will be assessed by the analyst with a written analytical summary of the findings with observations and recommendations. BT benchmark database As well as receiving performance improvement reports customers can benefit from the BT benchmark database which is database of all the customers BT manages. This allows BT to assess typical improvement and optimisation rates for different types of applications and customer environements creating an industry benchmark. The below graph shows the range of bandwidth reduction improvements by application and is based on a selection of 21 common applications from a total of 95 measured. The green bar shows average reduction and the red bars show maximum reduction. BT benchmark database

We evaluated several partners and chose BT because of our established business relationship, and because they offered a fully managed service and had a proven track record in delivering Riverbed technology. Summary Connect Acceleration enables companies to: Accelerate all TCP Applications for remote sites and mobile users Optimise bandwidth Centralise data and consolidate infrastructure. BT s Connect Applications team managed the deployment of WAN acceleration into our five data centres and at nine larger offices at some difficult locations in Asia Pacific region and Africa. We have been able to scale the service quickly with BT deploying appliances in additional sites. We have aggressive expansion plans to improve application performance to an additional 500 offices over the coming months, and will shortly ask BT to evaluate Riverbed s Steelhead Mobile software solution for providing mobile workers LAN-like access to files and applications from their laptops.
