Introduction Chapter 1 Introduction The ROBO-N201G and ROBO-N201G2 single port and dual 10BASE-T / 100BASE-TX / 1000BASE-T Ethernet Daughter Board are designed to enhance the capability of any existing computer board that has external 68-pin PCI connector. As an auxiliary PCI device, this daughter board is to increase system integration potential, while still keeps a minimum physical system size. The design of this daughter board is completely based on Intel 82540EM 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet chipset that caches up to 64 packet descriptors in a single burst for efficient PCI bandwidth use. In addition, using hardware acceleration, the controller offloads tasks from the CPU, such as TCP/UDP/IP checksum calculations and TCP segmentation. The Intel 82540EM integrates Intel s fourth generation Gigabit MAC design with fully integrated, physical layer circuitry to provide a standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet interface for 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 10BASE-T applications (802.3, 802.3u, and 802.3ab). The controller designed with a pipeline DMA Unit and 128-bit-wide buses for the fast performance. It handles Gigabit Ethernet traffic with low network latency and minimal internal processing overhead. 1.1 Features of Intel 82540EM The ROBO-N201G/G2 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T Ethernet Daughter Board adopts Intel 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller. Features of this Ethernet controller includes: 32-bit PCI bus master interface Efficient PCI-bandwidth usage with caches up to 64 packet descriptors in a single burst Compliant with Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and PCI Power Management specification Hardware offload of TCP/UDP/IP to increased throughput and lower CPU utilization Optimized fetching and write-back mechanisms for efficient system memory and PCI bandwidth usage Moderation interrupt controls enable IT staff to easily create multiple virtual LAN segments ROBO-N201G/G2 User s Manual 1-1
