Digitizing a Logo Created by Debbi Lashbrook Use the tools of BERNINA Embroidery Software 7 to create a logo from a converted vector image; then feature your logo on Bella Nonna s Zippety Wine Bag. Right click on Show Hoop and select BERNINA Medium Hoop, 130 x 100, #26. Make sure Show Hoop is checked, click OK. In the Digitize toolbox, select the Rectangle tool. Select the single outline stitch from the Stitch Toolbar.
Click and drag a rectangle on the design screen within the hoop. Press Esc or select the Select Object Tool. Select the rectangle. In the Transform Toolbar, make sure Proportional Scaling is in the unlocked position and change the dimensions of the rectangle to 4 in width and 3.5 in height. Press Enter. Don t be concerned that it is outside the hoop. Right click on the rectangle to open Object Properties. Change the stitch length to 5mm; click Apply. Select the Tie-In/Off tab and select Off for both the Tie-In & Tie-Off. Press OK. Right click on Show Grid. Change the values of both the Horizontal & Vertical Grid Spacing to 1mm (.04 ). Make sure Show Grid is checked and press OK. The grids with serve as a guideline for the lettering. You want to make sure the lettering columns are at least 1mm wide. Create the Lettering: Switch to Artwork Canvas. Select the Vector Lettering icon. Click on the screen within the rectangle. From the drop down font choices, select Lucida Calligraphy as your font. Type Lollipops. While the Vector Lettering icon selected, click and drag over the lettering to highlight the lettering. Hint: Click within the selection boxes that surround the letter. Make sure Lock Ratio is in the locked position and change the Height of the letters to.5. Press Enter. Deselect the lettering; then reselect the Vector Lettering icon. Click on the screen below the word Lollipops. Select Arial for the font type from the drop-down choices. Activate Caps Lock and type PARTY PLANNING. With Lock Ratio still locked, change the Height of the letters to.25. Press Enter. Select the Select Artwork Object icon; draw a bounding box around the two words. In the Arrange menu, select Align and Distribute; then Arrange Centers Vertically. While the letters are selected, click on a color chip from the Color Palette. Select Convert Artwork to Embroidery. Press 0 on your keyboard to show the design in full screen. While the words are selected, move them into the lower part of the rectangle. Select Zoom and zoom in close to the lettering to check that the satin column width is at least 1 grid space (1mm). If not, select the lettering and right click on the lettering to open Object Properties and change the Width percentage to 110%; then press Apply and recheck the width. Deselect; the words; then select Lollipops and move the word so it is about 4 grids from Party Planning. Use the up and down arrows of the keyboard to keep the words centered with one another. Click on Show Grid to hide the grid.
Create the Logo Switch back to Artwork Canvas. Click on Load Artwork. Navigate to the location of lollipop.png. Select the file and click on Import. Press Enter. While the artwork is selected, click on Quick Trace. Open Object Manager. Select the Lollipop.png and press delete. Select the vector artwork and use the resizing handles to decrease the size so that the lollipops are about 2 tall. Check the Property Bar for the dimensions. Place the lollipops above the lettering. With the lollipops selected, click on Convert Artwork to Embroidery. Editing the Logo While the lollipop embroidery is selected, press Ctrl G to group them. Select Ctrl A or Edit> Select All and in the Arrange Toolbox, select Align Vertical Centers. Press 0 on the keyboard to zoom into the design. Select Slow Redraw to watch the design stitch. Make note of any changes that need to be made. There are changes in sequence that must be done. The design is much too dense for its size some changes in type of stitch and density would improve the design. There are long satin floats in two of the lollipops that need to be changed. There are some single stitches that must be deleted from the lollipop sticks. Close Slow Redraw. Select the lollipops and select Ctrl + U to ungroup them. If Color Film is not open, click on the Color Film icon. Select the colors of the lollipop sticks in Color Film while holding the Ctrl key and select Move to Start. Select the rectangle in Color Film and click on Move To Start. Select View> View by Color. In the dialog box, select the colors of the large circles of the lollipops use Color Film sequence as a guide. Check the Color Code number in the dialog box with the Color Code number in Color Film. Select OK. Select the purple swirl, the darker green swirl, and the coral swirl in Color Film while holding the Ctrl key and press Delete. Select Ctrl A to select all the remaining circles. Right click on Ripple Fill. Change the Stitch Spacing to 1mm. Click OK. Select View> View By Color. Select the color chips for the satin centers, again using Color Film as a guide and holding down the Ctrl key to select multiples. Press OK. Select the blue inner satin swirl; then select Add Stitch Angles in the Edit Toolbox. Set four angles around the swirl using two left clicks and placing the angles at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00. Press Enter to activate the angles.
While the design is in Reshape mode, make the satin stitch more narrow by clicking on the blue nodes and dragging them to make a more narrow satin stitch. You may add reshape points by right clicking on the edge of the satin swirl; then move as needed. You can change any yellow nodes to a blue (curved) node by selecting it and pressing the space bar. You can also select a node and press Delete to eliminate a node. If the angles need to be readjusted, click on the peach square and drag the angle to adjust as needed. Press Esc when finished. Select the center satin and dot and press Delete. For the remaining lollipops, select the satin swirls and the center satin dots while holding the Ctrl key; press Delete. Select the two blue swirls while holding the Ctrl key and select Copy. Select Paste and move the copied set of swirls to the green lollipop. Select Paste again and move this set of swirls to the peach lollipop. To change the color of the swirls, select the Color Picker icon and select the peach satin outline. Move your cursor to each of the satin swirls of the peach lollipop and apply the peach color by clicking on each of the swirls. Repeat the steps for the green lollipop. Press Esc. Select Edit> Select All and right click to open Object Properties. Click in front of Satin Spacing> Manual. Change the value to.45mm. Press OK. Select View> View All Colors. Select the white color chip in Color Film and press Move to End. There are a couple of stray stitches that must be deleted as well. Zoom into the yellow lollipop stick. There is a yellow stitch that shows on top of the green. Select the stitch and press Delete. Repeat this for the stray stitch on the blue stick. Other Editing Possibilities For stitching the design on a fabric other than a Woven Medium Weight Fabric, you may wish to change the fabric settings. If you wish to change the settings, Select Design> Fabric. Select the Fabric Type from the drop-down choices. The software automatically updates the settings for your selected fabric. If you are stitching the design on a woven medium weight fabric and you wish to make the letters bolder, you may adjust the pull compensation. This is also a good thing to do for the automatically generated embroidery.
Select Edit> Select All. Select the Effects icon. In the Others Tab, check Pull Compensation (you will need to check the box twice) and change the Pull setting to.4mm. Press OK. To change the density of the lettering, select the lettering by holding the Ctrl key and right click to open Object Properties. Select the Fill Stitch Tab, place a dot in front of Manual Satin Spacing and change the spacing to.45. Press OK. Opening up Lettering If any of the inner areas of your lettering need to be opened up, you can select the lettering you need to edit and in the Edit Toolbox, select Break Apart. The first time you select Break Apart, the phrase is broken into words; then the word, into letters, and finally the letter, into stitches. You will need to re-select the word; then select Break Apart. Then reselect the letter and select Break Apart. The illustrations below show how to open up the letter A in PARTY PLANNING. After the letter is broken into stitches, select the bar of the letter A and move to open up the inner space. Finalizing the Design Select Slow Redraw once again to watch the design stitch out. In Color Film, select the green satin swirls color chip and drag to stitch after the green satin ring. Drop the color chip in the space between the color chips. Select Hoop Canvas, select the hoop, and Rotate Left two times. Return to Embroidery Canvas and save your design. Write the design to the machine of your choice.
