Installing the SPM: 1. Connect the power cord from the SPM to a wall outlet or power strip. 2. Connect the USB cable from the SPM to a printer. 3. Optional. Connect a USB cable from the SPM to a PC. *The LED on the SPM should be solid green. Installing the SPM Wizard If purchased, the SPM Programming Wizard is shipped on the Secure Print Key. Insert the Secure Print Key in any Windows PC and run Setup.exe from the SPM Wizard folder. The Wizard and a Help file will be installed to the location you specify. The Help file provides instructions on using the Wizard to create your own files for the Print Key. The Print Key may be used to store files other than those necessary for printing with the SPM. The SPM will only read files that have been programmed on the Key by the SPM Wizard. All other files are ignored by the SPM. Files can be copied from one Secure Print Key to another but the SPM files (*. SPIMG extension) will only work on the original programmed Secure Print Key.
Interpreting LED states Secure Print Module LED Print Key LED Meaning Notes Normal states, in sequential order Solid Green N/A Ready Solid Green Blinking Ready from Print Key, copying to on-board flash Blinking Green Off Printing Solid Green Off Ready to disocnnect Print Key Abnormal/Error States Blinking Red Off Unable to Print Check Printer Status and connection Red/Green Flicker Solid Updating SPM Firmware Do not unplug the device during this time. The update should complete in 30 seconds or less Solid Red Solid Error reading Print Key Reprogram the Key with the Wizard if aviable Rapid Blinking Red Solid Error writing to on-board flash Disconnect the SPM poer cable and reconnect it to format the on-board flash Firmware Updates If necessary, the firmware on the Secure Print Module can be upgraded. Source Technologies will supply a file named FIRMWARE.HEX which should be copied to the Print Key. The SPM will read this file, temporarily copy it to the on-board data flash, then store it in permanent program flash. It is very important that the unit is not unplugged during this process. Accidental power loss would likely result in the corruption of the program flash. The SPM would then need to be reprogrammed at Source Technologies. Using the SPM and Secure Print Key Once the SPM has been connected to the printer, insert the Secure Print Key into the data drive of the SPM. Once inserted, the SPM will have a blinking green light, which signifies that data on the Secure Print Key is being transferred to the printer s RAM memory. Once the blinking light has stopped, the printer has the secure print resources in memory and is ready for an application to call the resources from the printer. To confirm the resources were downloaded successfully, check the printer s font list or send a test print job. Checking the Firmware Version To check the current firmware version loaded on the SPM: 1. Attach the Print Key to a Windows PC. 2. Create a file on the root drive of the Print Key named VERSION.REQ. The file name must be in all capital letters. The contents of the file are unimportant an empty text file is acceptable. The SPM Programming Wizard can create this file from the final Programming page. 3. Safely remove the Print Key from the PC. 4. Attach the Print Key to the SPM. The firmware version will be sent to the printer as a text file. 5. Using the Windows PC again, delete the VERSION.REQ file from the Print Key.
