Introduction SpanDisc User s Guide SpanDisc is a complete disc archival and backup solution. SpanDisc uses the automation features or Rimage Corporation s Digital Publishing Systems to archive entire hard disks or parent folders to DVD or CD with a minimum of user intervention. Requirements Windows 2000 or XP 5MB free disk space for program files Working drive capable of holding at least as much data as is on the hard disk to be imaged Rimage Producer II, III, DL, and all N series running Rimage software version 7.0 and above Package Contents SpanDisc installation CD This Manual Licensing SpanDisc is intended for use on a single computer and is licensed perseat See the End-User license agreement at the end of this document 2

Installing SpanDisc SpanDisc User s Guide Run the installer executable (setup.exe) from the installation CD and follow the on-screen instructions. At the Choose Components dialog, the version of Rimage software suite must be selected. Choose the version (7 or 8) that matches the first number in the Rimage software version running on the system SpanDisc will be interfacing with. To verify the Rimage software version, open Rimage System Manager and select Help>About. SpanDisc requires product registration after installation. It may be used for up to 30 days in full-function trial mode. After 30 days SpanDisc will cease to function if it is not registered. To register SpanDisc: Every time SpanDisc runs you will be prompted to register. Click on Yes to continue Click on Generate Click on Copy to Clipboard Paste the XML Request Code block into an email with your contact information and serial number provided to you when you purchased the software and send to activation@discretetech.com. Put SpanDisc Registration in the Subject line An Activation Code will be e-mailed back to you Paste the activation code from the e-mail into the lower block Click on Activate 3

SpanDisc User s Guide The SpanDisc Interface SpanDisc uses a drag-and-drop interface. Simply drag the drive or folder to be processed into the SpanDisc window. SpanDisc cannot archive active system disks or Rimage cache drives! Preferred Media The media type the archive material from the hard drive will be output to. 80-minute CD-R is the default. Available options include CD, DVD, Dual-layer DVD, and BD-R. DVD to CD Runoff Only available when DVD-R is set as the preferred media type, and only compatible with 80- minute CDs. This option will record the last disc of an archive set on a CD instead of a DVD if the data to be recorded is less than 700MB. This prevents using a DVD to record a small amount of data. The Rimage publishing system must be set up to handle both media types at the same time see Rimage s Production Server User s Guide. Job Options Opens the default job options configuration window (see next section). Title Title for this set of discs. Passed through to the merge file in field 2. Description Description for this set of discs. Passed through to the merge file in field 3. Enable encryption Enables encryption for this disc set. Password may be up to 64 characters. Password is passed through merge field 1; SecureDisc must be set up to accept passwords from merge field 1 for proper operation. Encryption is only available if SecureDisc for Rimage is installed and has enough available encrypted images. SecureDisc for Rimage is sold separately. Use common files from folder - Allows a set of files to be placed and repeated on each disc in the set. When checked, specify a parent folder that contains the files and folders you wish to repeat. Files and folders inside the parent folder specified will be placed in the root directory of each disc. For example, if C:\CommonParent\ is specified, the entire contents of that folder will be placed in the root folder on each disc created. For best results, the contents of the specified folder should not overlap with the objects dragged into the main SpanDisc job window. 4

Job Options SpanDisc User s Guide All options displayed are stored in the registry under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Discrete Technologies\SpanDisc\Settings All options displayed are the defaults and will work on most systems. Imaging Options: Microsoft Joliet Extensions Allows long file names (up to 64 characters) using the Unicode character set. Compatible with Windows 95 and higher. Not compatible with most UNIXes or Macintosh without extra software. Rock Ridge Extensions Implements long file names (up to 255 characters) using 8-bit ASCII. Not compatible with MS-DOS and most Windows releases. Relax ISO directory restrictions Turn this option on if the data to be archived has 32+ nested directories. Relax ISO name restrictions Turn this option on to allow most printable characters in file names, as well as long filenames. Enabling Joliet extensions instead of this option is a better choice if the archive data contains foreign characters. Skip over files with bad names Skips over file names that are determined to be un-recordable during SpanDisc s initial file scan. Bad file examples include Windows page files and temporary files. Use separate disc for file index Places the text file of each produced disc s contents on a separate disc, rather than the last disc of the set. Use PowerImage Uses Rimage s compressed ISO image format to reduce imaging space requirements. Keep top level directories intact When a top level folder is dropped in for processing, each folder under the parent folder will be output on its own disc. This option keeps all subdirectories and files under the first subfolder intact and on the same output disc. 5

SpanDisc User s Guide Rimage Options: Messaging server host Computer name of the Rimage control center. Path to shared Rimage files Path to the Rimage working folder on the Rimage Control Center. UNC path names may be used. Job base name Identification prefix of jobs sent by this client to Rimage s messaging server. Default is spanner and does not need to be changed. Client ID Identification of this client when talking to Rimage s messaging server. Default is localhost_spandisc and does not need to be changed. Use custom label file Specifies the label file to use for archive jobs. The label file should be created in Rimage s CD Designer program and specified here before running a job. Production priority - This sets the priority given to submitted jobs. Default priority is 5; 0 is the highest priority, 9 is the lowest priority. When set to 0, SpanDisc jobs will pre-empt all other jobs of lower priority on the Rimage system. Setting a higher priority will not interrupt a job that is already in progress. Use local Imaging Server Targets a Rimage Imaging Server if installed on the local PC. Used in situations where the Rimage control center does not have access to certain network resources due to security restrictions. Image processing time may be negatively impacted by network traffic in this configuration. PowerImage must be disabled. Disc Labeling SpanDisc outputs three variable merge fields for label printing: Field 1 Password for SecureDisc Integration Field 2 Disc Set Title Field 3 Disc Set Description Field 4 - Disc number Disc 1 of 22 Field 5 - Beginning file/path name \\server\fileabcdef.000 Field 6 - Ending file/path name \\server\fileabxxxx.xyz SpanDisc prints the above merge fields on a label template. The label can be customized - the template is created with Rimage s CD Designer. Template labels are included, and placed in C:\Program Files\Disc gies\spandisc\ during installation. For more information about label creation, see Rimage s CD Designer documentation. Labels should be kept locally on the Rimage control center, typically in the E:\Rimage\Labels folder. 6

SpanDisc User s Guide The included label file may be modified, or a new label can be created from scratch. The steps below describe how to set up a new label file: 1. Create a standard label then place a text object. 2. Double-click on the object and select Database from the Source dropdown. 3. Click on Database Setup. 4. Click on Next. 5. Select Text File and click on Next. 6. Enter C:\Program Files\\Disc gies \SpanDisc\default.txt as the text file then click on Next. 7. Select Mixed Quote and Comma from the drop-down and click on Next. 8. Select No and click on Finish. 9. Click on OK. 10. Select Field 1 from the Use Field drop-down. 11. Click on OK and place the object in its desired position. 12. Save the modified label where it can easily be found. Be sure to select this label in the Job Options window before running a SpanDisc job. Using SpanDisc 1. Drop the drives or folders to be archived into the SpanDisc window. 2. Select the media type from the Preferred media picklist. The media type must match the type of media loaded in the Rimage system. 3. Review applicable job options by clicking on the Job Options button. All job options are described in the Job Options section. 4. Click on the Go! button. A status window (right) will appear, showing the total number of discs that will be created. 5. When job processing has finished, retrieve the created discs from the Rimage system and click on OK. 7

SpanDisc User s Guide Using SpanDisc in Unattended Mode SpanDisc can be used in a command-line driven mode. This allows for integration into scripts, as well as enabling the ability to schedule when SpanDisc run through the task scheduler built into Windows. SpanDisc [ /UM {/650 /DVD /DVD-DL /BD} {/TITLE:< set title > /DESCRIPTION: < set description > /SECURITY: < set password >} <sourcedrive> ] [/?] /UM /DVD Turns on unattended mode. Requires a source drive parameter <sourcedrive>; this should be a fixed drive letter, such as C: Sets the preferred media size: /650 = 74-minute CD-R /DVD = 4.7 GB DVD /DVD-DL = 8.5 GB DVD /BD = 25 GB BD-R Unattended mode defaults to 80-minute CD-R media if no size is set. /650 and /DVD cannot be used together. /TITLE: Sets the disc set title. Passed to merge field 2. /DESCRIPTION: Sets the disc set description. Passed to merge field 3. /SECURITY: Enabled encryption and sets the disc set password. SecureDisc for Rimage is required. /? Pops up a dialog with help text in it, then exits. In unattended mode, SpanDisc will skip directly to the status box and start processing files immediately. If the generated images record successfully, SpanDisc will exit automatically. If any errors are detected, the SpanDisc status window will stay open. Before using unattended mode for the first time, SpanDisc should be run in interactive (GUI) mode so the desired job options can be reviewed. SpanDisc uses the saved job options settings in the registry for unattended mode, and will fall back to the defaults if no saved settings are found. 8

Tips and Tricks SpanDisc User s Guide In unattended mode, to specify a single parent folder instead of an entire volume, map the folder to be archived as a local drive letter. When using SpanDisc in a network environment, be sure to change the messaging server setting under job options to the computer name of the Rimage control center. Also be sure to specify all folder and file names, such as the label file, in UNC. (\\rimage\labels\example.btw) SpanDisc relies on the Rimage Imaging Server service running on the Rimage control center. To properly image files over a network, the RimageServices account on the control center must have mutual read access to the content you are processing through SpanDisc. 9
