Technical Features Q. What are the benefits of Power over Ethernet? A. Power over Ethernet (PoE) can provide a lower total cost of ownership for deployments that incorporate IP phones, wireless LAN access points, and IP video surveillance cameras, as well as any IEEE 802.3af-compliant end devices. PoE eliminates the need for wall power to each PoE-enabled device by powering devices directly over the Ethernet connection, reducing rewiring costs when deploying IP phones and wireless LANs. PoE switches also eliminate the need for power injectors and PoE midspans for powering IP devices. Q. How many powered devices (PD) can the Cisco 200 Series PoE switches power? A. These switches support the IEEE 802.3af standard, and so a maximum of 15.4W of PoE power can be supplied to any PoE 10/100 or Gigabit Ethernet base port. The total power available for PoE per switch is shown in Table 4. Table 4. Maximum PoE Power Available per Switch Product Ordering Number Model Name Total Power Dedicated to PoE Number of Ports That Support PoE SLM224PT-xx SF200-24P 100W 12 SLM248PT-xx SF200-48P 180W 24 SLM2008PT-xx SG200-08P 32W 4 SLM2024PT-xx SG200-24P 100W 12 SLM2048PT-xx SG200-50P 180W 24 The number of PoE devices that can be connected simultaneously at full power (15.4W) depends on the power budget required by each device. Add up the power budgets of the individual end devices and subtract the total from the switch s total PoE budget as shown in Table 4. Q. Do the Cisco 200 Series PoE switches support Cisco pre-standard PoE? A. No. For Cisco pre-standard PoE, we recommend the Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches, which support both 802.3af and Cisco pre-standard PoE. Q. Does the Cisco 200 Series support IPv6? A. These switches support numerous capabilities, making them ideal for voice deployments. First, the switches support QoS mechanisms to prioritize voice traffic. The switches have four hardware queues that can be configured for servicing through strict priority and weighted round robin mechanisms. The switches recognize 802.1p, differentiated services code point (DSCP)/type of service (ToS), and IPv6 QoS set by the phone endpoints and prioritize them automatically. In addition, the switches support Link Layer Discovery Protocol Media Endpoint Discovery (LLDP-MED), which allows the switch to instruct the phone as to which VLAN and QoS parameters to set and also to automatically learn the capabilities of the phones. In a future firmware release (Q3CY11) Cisco Discovery Protocol and SmartPorts will also be supported. The switches also support an Auto Voice VLAN capability that can automatically detect phones, add them to a voice VLAN, and prioritize them accordingly. Lastly, numerous models support PoE, which allows the switch to power the phones connected to it. 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Q. When do I sell the Cisco 200 Series versus the Cisco 300 Series switches? A. The Cisco 200 Series is ideal for small business customers that need more features than an unmanaged switch can provide, such as security and management, but are not quite ready for the cost and all the advanced features of a managed switch. A smart switch is not the same as a managed switch in that it provides only basic switch management and security features. The Cisco 200 Series is targeted for small businesses that require basic managed switches, but for whom value is a critical purchase factor. These products deliver the basic performance, features, and management that small businesses require, at an affordable price. Q. Why spend more money on a managed switch when the customer can buy a smart switch? A. Smart switches provide basic QoS, security, and management features. In an environment where the customer needs more intelligence from the network (such as the ability to closely control users, applications, and access), managed switches are highly recommended. Managed switches also deliver better scalability and more security, QoS, and management options. Additional Product Information Q.
