Name Hr Length Lab Using a metric ruler or meter stick, find the length of all the items in both centimeters, and millimeters. Make sure to include the UNITS on all your answers or they will be wrong! Item Length in Centimeters (cm) To the nearest tenth #.# Length in Millimeters (mm) To the nearest whole number ##. Your Height - Stand against the wall and have a friend point to your height. Your Pinky Finger Width of Classroom Width of a Coin The skinny side! Distance a paper plane travels - Quietly in the hall, fly the airplane once. Height of any Textbook Here is Instructions on reading your METRIC ruler! REMEMBER! In science around the world, we NEVER use inches, feet, yards, or miles EVER!
1. The basic unit of length in the metric system is the and is represented by a lowercase. 2. How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? 3. Use a ruler and line below to answer the questions. What is the length of the line in centimeters? cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? cm (HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter no decimals.) 4. Write out what each unit represents in words? mm = cm = 5. How much does each one equal? 1 m = cm 1 cm = mm 1 km = m 6. refers to the amount of matter in an object. While refers to gravity s pull on that object. These values are the same on earth but would be different on the moon. 7. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the and is represented by. 8. What instrument will we use to find the mass of objects? 9. Write out what each unit represent in words? mg = cg = dag = mg =
Mass Lab - Part 1 Today you will compare the sugar content of several brands of gum. Each groups will chew one brand of gum. Then we will compare class data/brands in Part 2. Done by Calculation! Write how here: Done by Calculation! Write how here: 1. What is the total mass of sugar (whole group) dissolved by chewing? 2. What is the average mass of sugar dissolved by chewing in each piece of gum? (hint: total mass of sugar/number of people in the group=) Extra Credit Question: What is the percentage of sugar in a piece of gum?
Mass Lab Part2 Now we will collect class data and make some comparisons among brands of gum. Brand Mass of Sugar in One Piece of Gum 1. Which gum would your dentist recommend chewing this gum? Why? 2. What assumption is made about the change in mass of the gum before and after chewing? Explain whether you think this is a valid assumption. 3. How would the results be affected if there was a lot of saliva on the chewed pieces of gum?
Volume of Liquids Volume Lab - Part 1 Finding the volume of liquids, regular shaped solids, and irregular shaped solids. We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder pictured here? ml What causes the meniscus? Answer: A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides. **Not all graduated cylinders have marks for each 1mL. Some are for every 5mL, some 2mL, and even some 0.5mL or 0.2mL!! A quick way to determine what each line on the cylinder is to: 1. Find how many ml are in the gap between labeled lines. 2. Then, divide by the number of lines shown. Here s an example: 60 Step 1) 60mL - 40mL = 20mL Step 2) 20mL / 10lines = 2mL/line For this example, each line is worth 2mL Go around the room to the various graduated cylinders of colored water. Fill in the data table below. (Make sure to pay attention to the scale/marks being used on each graduated cylinder) Color Volume
Volume Lab - Part 2 Finding the volume of liquids, regular shaped solids, and irregular shaped solids. Volume of Rectangular Solids We can measure the volume of 3D rectangular objects using the formula: length x width x height = volume Practice on these three pictures: 6cm 20cm 8cm 6cm 6cm 7cm 3cm 35cm But Wait! I thought volume was measured in Liters... It is!! A cubic centimeter is equal to one ml. 3 Practice measuring the objects provided. Fill in the table below. 3 Object Show Your Work Here Volume in cm Volume in ml
Volume Lab - Part 3 Finding the volume of liquids, regular shaped solids, and irregular shaped solids. Volume of Irregular Shaped Solids We can measure the volume of irregulars objects using water displacement. Practice: 2) Amount of H2O with object = 1) Amount of H2O without object = -- 3) Difference is the Volume = When doing the math, always subtract the amount of water without the object from the amount with the object. This is opposite of the order you collect the data. Practice using the objects provided. Fill in the table below. Object H 2 O without object H 2 O with object Volume of Object (ml)
Volume - Practice Problems 1. is the amount of space an object takes up. 2. The base unit of volume in the metric system is the and is represented by. 3. 1 milliliter is equal to one cubic 4. Complete the statement. 3 ml = cm3 5. What instrument will we use to find liquid volume? 6. What is the name of the curve you see at the top of a liquid in a cylinder? 7. What formula do we use to find the volume of a cube? X X = 8. In your own words, explain how to find the volume of an irregular object using a graduated cylinder? 9. What is the volume of liquid in each cylinder? (Pay attention to the scales for each cylinder). A. B. C. s
