What is SmartHalo? SmartHalo is a smart, connected, award-winning device for urban cyclists. It installs securely on your handlebar and pairs with your smartphone to provide navigation instructions, a night to light your path at night, an alarm system that keeps your bike safe against thieves, a fitness tracker, as well as a personal assistant feature to keep you connected. In this user manual, you ll learn how to set up SmartHalo on your bike and make the most of it! Happy cycling. The SmartHalo Team 3

Getting started

Installing the app on your smartphone The first step to use SmartHalo is to download the app on your phone. Go on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store from your phone and search for "SmartHalo - Bike smarter". Download and open the app. Then simply follow the instructions to create an account, install SmartHalo on your handlebar and pair it with your phone. Make sure you have the appropriate phone and that its operating system is up to date. Minimum requirements for ios and Android : ios 9 or above Android 4.4.4 or above. 5

Handlebar compatibility SmartHalo supports most standard handlebars with a diameter of 31.8, 25.4 or 22.2mm. Depending on your bike, you ll need to use one of the spacers provide. d. 6

Installing SmartHalo on the bike To install SmartHalo on your bike, simply follow the instructions inside the app. If this is the first time you're using it, you'll be shown how to install it when creating your user account. If you have already created your account but you skipped the installation instructions, you can always go back by clicking on the Profile Icon, which opens the left panel, and then on Install instructions. 7

A few tips If the rubber inserts marked with an (A) make the brackets too tight and the rubber inserts marked with a (B) make the brackets too loose, you can try using one (A) and one (B) to achieve a balanced fit. It is also possible that something on your handlebar is blocking. Depending on the width of your stem, SmartHalo needs 2-2.5mm of space on either side. So you can try move what is blocking (a basket, a bell, a light) to make enough space for your SmartHalo. Otherwise, you could also place SmartHalo on either side of the stem (although that would break the perfect symmetry...). This is rare, but if there seems to be any interference between SmartHalo and the stem of your bike that is preventing a good fit, you can use the spacers to elevate SmartHalo. Instructions to add the spacers can be accessed from the "Help" button at the end of the installation instructions. Did you try using all rubber inserts? If you have and that it still doesn't fit, get in touch with us by pressing the Submit a request button. Please provide all relevant information on your bike, including the diameter of your handlebar, as well as a picture. 8

HaloKey To lock and unlock your Smarthalo on the mounts you will need your HaloKey. HaloKey allows you to install and remove your Smarthalo easily for charging or transport, Having troubles using HaloKey to install or remove the device? It takes a bit of practice to use the HaloKey. Make sure to follow every steps list bellow. Also, if you ordered multiple devices, make sure you re using the right HaloKey with your SmartHalo, otherwise it will not work. 9

To lock your SmartHalo : 1 2 3 4 5 Make sure both sides of the mounting base are properly aligned and in the same angle. Position the HaloKey following the orientation of the lock shape engraved on the device. Enter the left side of SmartHalo in first (the side opposite to the lock shape). Enter the right side of SmartHalo while making sure there is enough space to properly fit the brackets. When SmartHalo is in, remove the HaloKey and then align properly the mounting base, if needed. 10

To unlock your SmartHalo : 1 2 3 4 5 Make sure the mounting base is well aligned with the main unit. Position the HaloKey following the orientation of the lock shape engraved on the device. Gently lift the device from the right side (the side with the logo shape). Remove the left side. Remove the HaloKey 11

Linking an account and connecting to a SmartHalo The first time that you want to connect to your SmartHalo, you'll be prompted to create an account. This account will link to your SmartHalo you'll be the only one to be able to connect to it. That way, even if your SmartHalo stays outside at night, nobody else will be able to connect to it. If you lose your phone, or simply change phone, you'll still be able to connect to your SmartHalo by simply downloading the app again and login in on the same account. That is because SmartHalo links to an account, not a phone. Also, SmartHalo is meant to be linked to your account from inside the app, not from the system's Bluetooth settings. Linking SmartHalo to a new account If you open the app for the first time: create a new account and follow the instructions one of the steps consists of linking your account with your SmartHalo device. 12

Linking a SmartHalo to an existing user account You can also link with SmatHalo if you already have an account. After login, tap on the upper right Device Icon. Then item at the bottom. This brings you to a list that shows SmartHalo devices within range. Connect to the one you want. 13

If you don t see your SmartHalo in the device list There are couple reasons why you would not see your device in the device list : Your Bluetooth is off. Make sure Bluetooth is activated on your phone. The SmartHalo has run out of battery. Make sure the battery is full by plugging it to a power source via USB. Once connected to a power source, you can tap once on the device to check the current battery level. The device is in a deep sleep state. If this is the first time you re using SmartHalo (or if SmartHalo is not currently associated with an account), you might need to wake it up from a deep sleep state. To do that, simply plug SmartHalo in a computer using the provided USB cable. You will see a green light in the center of the device for a few seconds. You can then pair it with your phone from inside the SmartHalo app, by clicking the «Not connected» button at the bottom of the right side drawer. The device is currently linked to another user account. You must log into the app with that account (or ask the current user to do so) and follow the instructions to unlink a device. 14

How do I turn SmartHalo on and off? A lot of what makes SmartHalo «smart» depend on two things SmartHalo is a new type of device and as such, there is no «on/ off» button. It will turn on automatically as you approach it and turn off by itself when you leave. To do that, it needs to recognize your phone that means the SmartHalo app must be on, even though it can stay in the background. Whether or not SmartHalo is currently connected to your phone. Whether or not SmartHalo is moving. For instance : The light will turn off if SmartHalo is not moving, regardless that are you connected or not (to prevent battery drain for those who leave their bikes inside their home). Good to know If you need to travel by plane with your SmartHalo, we recommend turning the alarm off to prevent it from being triggered when you disconnect from it. The alarm will trigger if you are not connected AND SmartHalo is moving, to protect your bike from theft. Fitness tracking will start when you are connected AND SmartHalo is moving, and will stop when SmartHalo stops moving. 15

Charging SmartHalo SmartHalo is meant to stay on your bike as long as possible, so that you do not have to actively think about charging it every day. This is why we made sure the battery life would last as long as possible. Under normal usage, the battery should last 3 weeks between charges. To charge SmartHalo, take it off from the mounting base using your HaloKey, open the rubber flap and use the provided USB cable to charge it from a computer or a wall charger. Some users have reported trouble with some chargers (notably from Apple), so we recommend trying to plug the USB cable in a computer port for consistent results. When SmartHalo is charging, you can tap on the surface to see charging progress. When the circle is full, the charge is complete this should take about 4 hours. Some computers output less power when they are in standby. It might take longer in that case. 16

The Features

Navigation

Bike to the Future One of the cornerstones of SmartHalo, the Navigation feature makes sure you get to your destination the safest way possible: not only will it make you take bike paths when available, but it s minimalist interface makes sure you can keep your focus on the road. 19

Before the trip: in the app The first step in setting up a trip is to set your destination in the Navigation tab of the app. Anyone who s ever used a mapping app will feel right at home. You can use the search engine to search for addresses or places (a restaurant s name for example) or you can long press anywhere on the map. Once you ve selected a destination, the app will automatically show you the best path to destination (FYI, we re currently working on offering more than one path and the possibility of adding waypoints!). You can also view the distance to your destination. And the estimated time to arrival. As with other mapping apps, you can add places to your favorites, or define them as your home or work. Once you re set, you can press that seducing play button to get going! You can then tuck your phone safely in your pocket: SmartHalo will take it from there. 20

During a trip: on SmartHalo There are two navigation modes included with SmartHalo. The default mode is turn-by-turn: this will show you each turn to take to reach your destination the best way possible. For the more adventurous: there is compass mode. With this mode active, SmartHalo will always point towards your destination, how you get there is up to you. 21

Turn-by-turn Turn distance SmartHalo s interface is as intuitive as it gets. When you re a few meters from your turn, SmartHalo will emit a sound, letting you know you have a turn coming up. A segment of the circular ring will light up in white pointing towards your turn. Then, as you get closer to the turn, you ll see it fade to green. Once you re at the turn, it blinks, letting you know you should be turning. Turn angle SmartHalo s turn signals are pretty easy to understand: they basically mimic the angle of the upcoming turn, right on your handlebar. Once you complete the turn, they disappear. 22

Rerouting Some construction work is blocking a suggested path? Or you just don t feel like taking a turn SmartHalo is suggesting? No worries, once you skip a turn, it ll reroute you in real time and compute a new path automatically. Use caution Some paths sometimes need to be taken with caution. These might include opposite one way streets you have to take for a few meters or pedestrian paths. We recommend you step off your bike for these segments. 23

Compass mode In compass mode, just let the pointer guide you to your destination. The closer you get, the greener it becomes. Compass mode will be activated in upcoming releases of the app. 24

Arrival Once you ve arrived at your destination, SmartHalo will blink in green. Why is SmartHalo suggesting this route? Smarthalo uses third party mapping services for navigation. Sometimes, these services might suggest taking strange routes if it considers it to be the best way to reach your destination. This being said, if you do not feel confortable using the suggested route, you can always ignore it SmartHalo will automatically reroute you during your ride and offer you another path to your destination. 25

Find your bike Having one of those days when you seem to forget everything, including where you parked your bike? Luckily, SmartHalo s app will always remind you of your bike s last known location. Remember: it cannot track your bike in realtime, only remind you where you phone last saw it. 26

Light

See and be Seen at Night The automatic night light is meant to turn on automatically at night as soon as you hop on your bike. To turn on this feature, simply press the switch at the bottom. 28

Light activation The light will turn on when SmartHalo is connected to your phone AND there is movement on the device. It will not turn on during the day, only at night. And it turns off by itself when you re done riding. It will turn off automatically either if you disconnect OR if the device doesn t move for a while. (Or if you bike all night and you re still up when the sun rises...) You can always turn on the light manually by making two short taps on the surface of SmartHalo (except when SmartHalo is charging, where tapping will show you progress). After entering two short taps the center LED will light in yellow to show that the front light will either turn ON (one flash) or turn OFF (two flashs). 29

Alarm

Keep Your Bike Safe SmartHalo's alarm system works by detecting vibration and movement on the device, using its internal sensors. You can activate the alarm by pressing on the button at the bottom of the alarm tab in the app. When activating the alarm for the first time, you will need to choose a tapcode in the app. Your tapcode is a Morse-like password consisting of short and long taps on the device that you use to manually arm and disarm the alarm, in case your phone runs out of battery. Once your choose your tapcode in the app, we recommend that you write it down on the tapcode reminder card and leave it in your wallet. Try setting up a tapcode, turning off Bluetooth and moving the device, to see what happens. You can then disarm the alarm by either turning on Bluetooth again or by entering your tapcode on your device. 31

The alarm does not have to be manually armed and disarmed. When the alarm is active in the app, it will arm automatically as soon as you leave the device behind (when Bluetooth disconnects) and will disarm automatically when you get to your bike (when Bluetooth connects). If the device moves while it is not connected to your phone, it will start by showing a visual warning. If movement/vibration is persistent, SmartHalo will continue to display orange warnings on the device and emit some sounds, until the alarm triggers. The alarm will then go on for about 30 seconds to a minute. Do I get a notification on my smartphone if the alarm is triggered? SmartHalo is connected to your phone by Bluetooth, a low-energy, low-range communication protocol. When you're near your device (in Bluetooth range), the alarm will disarm automatically. There is no point of sending the user a notification, because the person moving the device is most likely the user himself/herself. When you're out of range, the device cannot send you a notification on your phone it will trigger the alarm on the device. What if my battery phone dies while riding? If your phone runs out of battery while the alarm is active in the app and you are still riding, the alarm will show a warning and then trigger. In that case, you need to manually disarm the alarm by entering your tapcode on your device. 32

Fitness

Get Fit! SmartHalo can keep track of your cycling metrics automatically as soon as you hop on your bike, and stop by itself when you're done riding. To activate this feature, press on the button at the bottom of the fitness tab. When activated, SmartHalo will track automatically your metrics such as time, distance, average speed, calories and CO2 spared. Data is available for today s ride, as well as all past rides. It s also possible to view aggregated lifetime stats. 34

Visualizing speed in real-time Go in the Fitness tab and click on Set in the Goal Tracking section. Then choose Set Speedometer. Choose a maximum speed (for instance, 30 km/h). SmartHalo will then display your current speed as a percentage of that maximum speed using its circular interface. 35

Assistant

Never Miss a Call SmartHalo can notify you of incoming calls and SMS while your biking. To activate this feature, press the button at the bottom of the assistant tab in the app. On Android, you can activate both Calls and Text Messages. On ios, you can only activate Calls. You can also choose to enable sound notifications and choose the volume for them. With the slider, you can adjust the volume of notifications. 37

Touch SmartHalo s top surface is equipped with a capacitive touch button that can take short and long taps as input. Taps will trigger different visual feedbacks depending on the context. 38

When connected to SmartHalo When connected to SmartHalo, you can manually turn on/off the front light with two short taps. SmartHalo will visually confirm the state change in the front light with a short yellow blip in the center (turn ON) or two short yellow blip in the center (turn OFF). A short tap will turn on the center DEL in white, while a long tap will light the entire Halo in white. The touch button is also used to manually arm and disarm the alarm system without your phone. This comes handy in the case you do not have your smartphone with you, or if it ran out of battery. To use this feature, you first need to define a tapcode in the alarm tab of the app. Tapcodes are 5 taps long. A short tap is represented by a dot (one LED) and a long tap by a line (two LEDs). When tapping to deactivate SmartHalo, each tap is separated by a space. 39
