Practising excellence. Guaranteeing quality.

European Technical Centre Sony Lifetime Guarantee Preserving your data is essential We all need to make sure our data is secure, that it's being used efficiently and that we have effective plans in place to recover information should the unthinkable happen. Sony s dedicated Technical Centre based in Belgium provides support to our European customers for all Sony generations.* Thanks to its high tech lab the team can run media health checks. Health checks that include analysis of the cartridge memory (CM) data, which can provide key information in determining the root cause of data queries. We also use test data to run a full backup of each cartridge to ensure that the maximum capacity of the cartridge remains accessible and fully usable. Complete peace of mind Sony s commitment is to ensure all customers are fully satisfied with the quality and performance of Sony Storage Media products. This is why we offer a lifetime guarantee* Sony s lifetime guarantee protects users from both manufacturing and material defects for the life of the product. The Sony lifetime guarantee ensures total confidence and peace of mind in all media decision making. Lifetime Guarantee Following testing a comprehensive diagnostic report is provided detailing the findings from the CM data and the results of the back up test with conclusions and recommendations where necessary. Sony s CM scanner, enables you to run your own media health-checks on site. By assessing the performance of your tapes and drives it is ideal for a complete system health-check.** Sony estimates a total archival life of 30 years on its cartridges. * The lifetime guarantee is valid on products purchased from 2005. Terms and conditions apply. * All major European languages are supported. **Contact your local Sony representative for more information pro.sony.eu/storage-media Storage media solutions guide 07

Sony Library Packs Sustainability Save time, save space, save money Save time, space and money with Sony library packs designed for higher volume users looking for a convenient and efficient way of accessing their tapes, each pack contains 20 cartridges. And with less packaging, Sony contributes to waste reduction and limits energy consumption. Save time fast to unpack & load Less packaging less plastic Reducing the impact on the environment Our overall eco ambition is very simple: to reduce the impact of our products and their business operations on the environment. The Sony approach to achieving this is even simpler and is broadly divided into 3 areas: Product When we produce new magnetic tapes we do not always have to use new materials at source; for example we use recycled raw materials to produce packaging and the cartridge shells. Save money better cost per unit Labelling Store more data 20 cartridges per pack Process Sony closely monitors and manages chemical substances used in its products at all stages of the manufacturing cycle. Our manufacturing plant in Japan does this from the raw material and component stages right through to final shipment. Planet By recovering and reusing materials, cutting waste and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Sony is committed to minimising the impact of our business on the planet. easy identification A library pack typically uses 65% less plastic compared to a single cartridge Tape vs Disk Tape has a lifespan of around 30 years, a very low cost per GB and almost zero energy consumption when offline thus offering exceptional environmental credentials, making it the clear preferred choice for archiving data & long-term back-up! pro.sony.eu/storage-media Storage media solutions guide 09

A pursuit of innovation for outstanding performance and efficiency

Sony Labelling Service Customised labelling for complete automated efficiency Complimentary and fully customisable to your needs, Sony labels enable easy identification of tape cartridges by libraries using automated systems that ensure increased efficiency, security and peace of mind. cartridges are increasingly dedicated to automated systems. With a single label on a Sony cartridge, these systems can identify the media to avoid mix-ups and limit unintended over-writing of key data. Labelling assists in error checking and provides easy, fast and accurate access to files. Without Sony labelling, such features would need to be handled manually: proving both time consuming and error-prone. This is why Sony offers a complimentary labelling service within its own inhouse clean room facility, with fully trained staff and Tri-optic approved printer and label stock. With Sony's pre-labelled cartridges you can gain time, gain automated features and secure your data. With Sony's complimentary labelling service: You can fully customize your sequences (alpha and/or numeric) Labels can be printed vertically or horizontally depending on your requirements All labels are printed and applied in a clean room environment All Sony labels are checked pre and post application. RFID labels are also available upon request* * RFID available for 5, 6 and 7. A charge applies for RFID labels. pro.sony.eu/storage-media Storage media solutions guide 11

Licensing Fully licenced The Technology Provider Companies (TPCs) confirm that Sony meets all technical requirements to manufacture 7. Silicon Valley, California (November 18, 2015) The Program TPCs, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM Corporation and Quantum Corporation announce that Sony Corporation has completed interchange testing for LTº Ultrium generation 7 format. The successful completion of this testing now permits Sony to use the Ultrium generation 7 formats on technology products. The industry leading magnetic tape manufacturers have once again demonstrated their commitment to the Program, said Calline Sanchez, Vice President Enterprise System Storage, IBM. The 7 technology is the biggest announcement in capacity and performance that the program has made in four generations. technology continues to provide enterprises with a way to contain the massive growth of critical data at the lowest possible cost. The Program requires that all licensees pass a series of verification testing involving rigorous data interchangeability requirements prior to using the Ultrium trademarks. Testing of a manufacturer s products is performed annually to confirm (based on the test samples) that it is adhering to the Ultrium format specifications. Buyers seeking Ultrium format products look for the Ultrium format trademark logo on both tape drives and data cartridges when reviewing backup and archiving solutions. Research & Development Storage capacity like never before Sony creates a new tape technology able to store up to 185 terabytes (TB) of data on a single cartridge. Created in conjunction with IBM, Sony s new tape technology has been developed using sputter deposition, which is able to form extremely fine crystal particles with the aim of creating a practical, next generation tape storage media solution. The new technology enables Sony to achieve the world s highest* areal recording density for tape storage media of 148 gigabits per square inch (Gb/in²). This is equivalent to approximately 74 times the capacity of current mainstream coated magnetic tape making it possible to record more than 185TB** of data per cartridge. the capacity of current mainstream storage tape 74X 148 gigabits per square inch (Gb/in²) 185TB** of data per cartridge Recent analysis by a leading IT research company finds that tape is the most cost-effective, reliable and energy-efficient method for long term data storage. Sony will continue to work towards commercialising this next generation tape media, with the aim of increasing recording densities even further. * As of April 30, 2014 ** When compared to a -6 high-end Ultrium format data cartridge utilizing a linear recording system (uncompressed). Sony 7 Storage Media Ideal for archiving at data centres Thanks to its low media cost per TB, 7 is economically the perfect solution to store large amounts of archival data in the long term. With its high capacity, the cartridge is designed to retain its archival quality for up to 30 years supported by Sony s proven technology in magnetic tape production. Enhanced coating technology for higher recording density Enhanced coating technology features a smoother film tape surface and enables narrower tracks (7 @ 3584 tracks vs 2176 tracks for 6) to be written and read accurately, resulting in higher recording density (7 @ 485kbits/inch vs 385kbits/ inch for 6). Improved reel structure to enhance tape to head interface Reel design was enhanced to realise the same level of stability at high speed tape running as for 6. Tape design for high durability and high reliability Sony s technology expertise and extensive history in developing media and professional tape formats contribute to high durability and high reliability of 7 media. LTFS (Linear Tape File System) The Linear Tape File System (LTFS) makes viewing and accessing tape files easier than ever before. LTFS works in conjunction with tape technology for ease of use and portability for open systems tape storage. With LTFS, one partition holds the content and the other holds the content s index, so the tape can be self-describing to improve archive management. With the operating system s graphical file manager and directory tree, utilising data on an Ultrium tape cartridge is as easy as dragging and dropping the file. 100% compatibility with all hardware brands!
