ProtoNode Configuring ProtoNode to Communicate with multiple RAYCHEM C910 controllers Application Design Note The ProtoNode multi-protocol device servers (ProtoNode-RER and ProtoNode- LER) are designed to interface the C910 and ACS-30 control systems with BACnet, Metasys or LonWorks hosts. One ProtoNode gateway can interface with one ACS- 30 system, or up to eight C910 controllers. When communicating to multiple C910 controllers they must be connected in series through the RS-485 terminals. Once connected, use the following procedure to configure the ProtoNode to communicate with up to eight C910 controllers. The steps below can apply to either the PROTONODE-LER or PROTONODE-RER. The max number of C910 controllers is 8 per ProtoNode. Setting the Modbus Address for each of the C910 controllers The first step before configurating the ProtoNode is to set each C910 to its unique address. The following steps will guide you to the correct menu within the C910 controller. Step 1 Apply power to the C910 controller. Ignore any alarms that may be indicated by the C910 controller. Step 2 Press the SHIFT button once followed by the ENTER key. The RED LED above the ENTER key should be ON. Step 3 Press the DOWN ARROW key until the Communication Setup is shown across the screen. Press the ENTER key to select the Communication Setup menu. Step 4 The first setup parameter is the PROTOCOL. The default protocol is HTCBUS. This needs to be changed to MODBUS RTU. 4a Press the ENTER key followed by the DOWN ARROW key until MODBUS RTU is shown in the display. Press the ENTER key to select MODBUS RTU.. Step 5 Press the DOWN ARROW key. MODBUS ADDR will be shown in the display. This is the menu used to enter the unique address for each C910 controller. The default address is 1. 5a Press the ENTER key. The display will stop scrolling. Use the UP ARROW key to select the Modbus address. Press the ENTER key to select the unique address. Step 6 Verify that the RS-485 module is recognized by the C910 controller. Press the DOWN ARROW key until HARDWARE = RS-485 is shown in the display. If you see this message then the C910 is working properly, if not then either the RS-485 card is missing or the card is defective. Step 7 Press the BACK key until the RED LED above the ENTER key is OFF. Remove power to the C910 and proceed to the next C910 for configuring the Modbus address. These steps must be repeated for each C910 controller. 1 / 6
Configuring the ProtoNode 1. Connect the C910 RS-485 terminals (terminal 16 RS-485+ and 17 RS-485- ) from each controller to the ProtoNode terminals as shown in the diagram below. Do not apply power at this point to either the ProtoNode or C910. 2. Connect the ProtoNode to a 9 to 30 VDC / VAC power source. Do not apply power at this point to either the ProtoNode or C910. 3. Connect a CAT 5 LAN cable from ProtoNode to the computer. The computer will be used to configure the number of C910 controllers per ProtoNode. 4. Turn power to the ProtoNode and C910 controller ON. 5. Start the computer and activate your web browser. 6. Enter the IP address 192.168.1.24 7. The following screen should appear. The node_offset and network_nr should be changed to the desired settings on the BACnet network. 2 / 6 EN-RaychemProtoNodeApplication-AR-H58901 04/15 Thermal Building SOLUTIONS
8. Select the ADD button to enter the first C910 controller. The following screen should appear. a. Enter the Modbus address into the Node ID box. b. Pull down the Current profile menu and select the BACnet IP C910. 9. Select the Submit button to enter the selection. The following screen should appear. 3 / 6
10. Press the ADD button to enter the next C910 and the Modbus address of the next controller. In this example only two C910s are connected to the ProtoNode. The following screen should appear showing both C910 with Modbus address 1 and 2 under the Node ID. 11. Select the Submit button to add the next C910 controller. The following screen should appear showing both C910s with Modbus address 1 and 2 under the Node ID. 12. To verify that the C910s are communicating with the ProtoNode select the Diagnostic and Debugging button in the lower right hand corner. The following screen should appear. 4 / 6 EN-RaychemProtoNodeApplication-AR-H58901 04/15 Thermal Building SOLUTIONS
13. Double click on the View file under the Navigation Tree and then double click on the Node file. The Navigation Tree should appear as shown below. 14. The screen next to the Navigation Tree will show the transmit and receives for each device (Dev_1 and Dev_2). 15. Verify that each device (C910 controllers) are updating by observing the Tx Msg/Rx Msg/Tx Char/Rx Char. 5 / 6
