Lastname 1 Firstname Lastname Doctor Professor ENG 111 D-14 27 April 2016 How to Format an MLA-Style Document Formatting a Modern Language Association (MLA)-style document is often required for academic writing in many college courses. Typically, courses in the humanities utilize this particular format due to its emphasis on authorship and authority. Courses in English, art, film, foreign language, music, religion, and philosophy customarily require this format because it is the standard format of scholarly work in those disciplines. There are several elements of an MLA-style document that are required for proper formatting. Essays written in MLA do not typically require a cover page, but some instructors may require one. Follow instructors directions regarding this requirement. MLA papers do not have an abstract or subheadings. Some basic characteristics of an MLA document include double-spaced lines (not paragraphs) throughout the essay, size 12 Times New Roman font, and a double-spaced Works Cited page with a hanging indent. Other elements include the use of a header on the first page of the essay, not the cover page, and on each subsequent page that displays the writer s last name and a page number. The attached handout provides click-by-click instruction on setting up an MLA-style essay using Microsoft Word 2010. One suggestion to consider is saving a document as an MLA template once you have created the settings on the computer you most frequently use so that you can simply open it and modify it for each MLA-style essay you write. This can save time in creating the settings and ensure accurate formatting each time you begin to compose an essay in

Lastname 2 this style. If you need assistance, come by the Gaston College Writing Center. We are located on the Dallas Campus in RCB 236 and on the Lincoln Campus in LC 202. Any of our coaches can assist you with this task and will be happy to do so! Open the Microsoft Word program on your computer, and follow the instructions on the next pages to design the document in which you will type your essay. You will create the cover page in its own separate document. 1. To create the header, click on the Insert tab in the toolbar. 2. Next, click Page Number in the Header and Footer box. Choose Top of Page in the drop-down menu, and then select Plain Number 3. 3. Click inside the header and type your last name in front of the page number and hit the spacebar one time. Highlight all the text inside the header and change the font to Times New Roman size 12. Click Close Header and Footer.

Lastname 3 4. You may now navigate inside the document to begin typing the first page of the essay. Make sure to set the font to Times New Roman, size 12 before you begin typing. You have already set it for the header, but the program treats the body of the document separately and needs this setting to be applied a second time. Follow the next instruction to set spacing before typing. 5. Set the document s double spacing prior to typing the essay itself. Click the tiny arrow to the right of the word Paragraph in the toolbar. 6. The screen below will appear. Set the Line Spacing to Double using the drop-down menu. 7. Make sure to check Do not add space between paragraphs of the same style. Select OK. The document will now have proper spacing throughout.

Lastname 4 8. Click the Left Align icon in the toolbar. 9. Next, type your first and last name. Hit Enter one time. Type your instructor s name and hit Enter one time. Type the class name and section (ex: ENG 111 D14) and hit Enter. Next, type the date using the format date, month, and year with no commas separating them. Hit Enter one time (ex: 4 April 2016). 10. Click the Center Alignment icon in the toolbar.

Lastname 5 11. Type the title of your essay. Hit Enter one time. 12. Then, click the Left Alignment icon in the toolbar again. 13. Hit Tab one time to indent the first paragraph of your essay (.5-inch indention). Begin typing your paper. Repeat this process of using Tab every time you begin a new paragraph.

Lastname 6 Tips for the Works Cited You can use the Ctrl + Enter shortcut to create a page break for the Works Cited page, which should be the last page of the document following the essay s conclusion. The spacing will already be correct; all you need to do is set a Hanging Indent to indent the second and subsequent lines of the Works Cited page entries. After typing the phrase Works Cited at the top of the final page, click on the tiny arrow to the right of the word Paragraph in the toolbar. Using the screen below, under Indentation, select the drop-down box under Special and click Hanging. Click OK. Hit Enter.
