These notes cover configuration with GFI/Brooktrout software. The following switches are not supported by T.38. For these and older switches, G711/L16 clear channel is used for fax purposes. Please note that Brooktrout FaxMaker driver version 14 has been tested on Windows 2003. The old way and the new T.38 way Set up with GFI Fax server Prior to ShoreTel 10, the GFI fax server had to be configured with a trunk card and had to be co-located with a ShoreTel Voice Switch, as depicted below: With native T.38, the trunk card is replaced by software from Brooktrout, called Brooktrout SR 140. The GFI server and the ShoreTel Voice Switch no longer need to be sitting next to each other. They can be located in different sites, as T.38 provides an increased resiliency to packet losses. ShoreTel Director Configuration Please note that no additional license is required to enable this integration. 1. Add the GFI server as SIP Server in ShoreTel Director using protocol UDP. 2. Configuration with GFI/Brooktrout SR140 1. From GFI sever PC, click start/programs/gfi FAXmaker Brooktrout TR1034 Driver/Brooktrout Configuration Tool 2. Follow the instructions onto the configuration page, select SIP in IP Call Control Modules 3. Set IP Parameters: Primary Proxy Server is ShoreTel Voice Switch Proxy, Contact Address is GFI server IP address 4. Adjust the T.38 Parameters: UDPTL Redundancy Depth Image is adjustable up to 2. Important considerations for ShoreTel native T.38 support In order to have fax calls re-directed to the target user, T.38 needs to be set up to use SIP Trunks. Having T.38 setup as a SIPUM server will place all faxes into one folder. The fax machine/fax server behind ShoreTel PBX should disable V34 feature to avoid using the G711/Linear clear channel. V.34 faxes are not supported. Customers who have upgraded to ShoreTel 10 and higher builds and utilizing V.34 modem/super Group3 fax at the higher rate will continue to work through T.38, however, the performance will be reduced to the lower rate. Changing the setting to non-t38 data terminal/fax server will not guarantee the higher rate automatically. The negotiation is based on the network condition and signal noise ratio over the link A speed of up to 9600 bps is supported with V.29. ShoreTel only supports T.38 in udptl form. T.38 calls in RTP or TCP form are not supported. ShoreTel does not support either IP media or RFC2833-based fax tone detection (in RFC2833, ShoreTel only supports DTMF, no named telephony events), therefore ShoreTel cannot detect fax tone coming from an SIP end-point with the exception of a SIP connection that is established with a physical port on the ShoreTel Voice Switch. In this case, the ShoreTel Voice Switch can detect a fax tone from the SIP endpoint and either switch to fax mode or redirect the call. ShoreTel depends on fax CNG tone detection or T.38 invite to redirect an incoming fax call. If the fax connection is established with one SIP-based endpoint (such as SIP extension or SIP trunk), ShoreTel depends on the SIP invite to either establish a fax connection or redirect the call to a preconfigured fax device. T.38 support is not supported on SIP-BRI. Capacity: Each ShoreTel Voice Switch supports up to 8 concurrent faxes over T.38. GFI supports up to 120 concurrent faxes per physical server. The maximum simultaneous faxes per switch can only be achieved in T1 switches. Record of Change This application note is subject to change.
