Prerequisites This technical paper assumes familiarity with the following prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Symantec Enterprise Vault software. Basic knowledge of the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified storage system Basic knowledge of the IBM SONAS storage system Solution components This section briefly describes the essential components used for a file system archival solution. Symantec File System Archiving is used in this document to illustrate how IBM Storwize V7000 Unified and IBM SONAS storage systems can be configured as a storage target for any type of Symantec Enterprise Vault implementation. Symantec Enterprise Vault File System Archiving Symantec Enterprise Vault is the industry-leading solution for content archiving. Developed as an extension to the Enterprise Vault archiving framework, Enterprise Vault File System Archiving lets you maintain business records from multiple file servers with a single solution. Symantec Enterprise Vault File System Archiving lets you block unwanted or inappropriate content, free up space on your primary storage system, reduce overall storage requirements, keep all content fully searchable and instantly accessible to the end user by archiving this content and storing it on IBM Storwize V7000 Unified and IBM SONAS storage systems. Enterprise Vault provides an option to retain multiple versions of the same file or document and user-driven recovery of the specific content can help significantly reduce administration overhead. With Enterprise Vault File System Archiving, enterprises will benefit from the following features: Reporting and decision analysis Analysis of active archived content on your primary storage system. including duplicate, stale and inactive files. Content control Blocking of files with formats outside of corporate policy (such as MP3, PST, and JPEG) from being saved or achieved Classification Deployment of the granular folder hierarchy, allowing user classification of files to archive Archiving Flexible, policy-controlled archiving to secondary storage based on file type, age, size, and other criteria Retention management Automatic expiration of file after the retention period has expired, enabling true file lifecycle management Symantec Enterprise Vault goes beyond traditional HSM applications by indexing and classifying data, making it available for discovery for legal purposes and to comply with external regulations. File archiving, the next logical step, is complementary to any storage resource management, tired storage, or file life cycle management initiative. 2

IBM Storwize V7000 Unified overview The IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system is a virtualizing RAID storage system that supports both block protocols and file protocols. This unified system includes the IBM Storwize V7000 file module and the Storwize V7000 storage system. The file module is a clustered system consisting of two units that provide file systems for use by networkattached storage. The file module uses the Storwize V7000 Unified storage system to provide the file module with volumes. Other volumes, which are block volumes, are provided on the storage area network (SAN) to be presented to hosts. The Storwize V7000 storage system consists of a drive enclosure called the control enclosure. Both regular and solid-state drives (SSDs) are supported. The control enclosure contains disk drives and two node canisters that are managed as a single clustered system. Expansion enclosures contain drives and are attached to the control enclosure. Expansion canisters include the serial-attached SCSI (SAS) interface hardware that enables the node hardware to use the drives of the expansion enclosures. Figure 1: IBM Storwize V7000 Unified configuration IBM SONAS overview IBM SONAS is an enterprise-class, modular, scalable, NAS solution designed to meet rapidly growing storage needs. Delivering seamless scalability for the high performance and massive capacity that 3

healthcare providers require, it builds on a distributed architecture to reduce management complexity and eliminate any single point of failure that might impede data availability. SONAS scales to capacities over 21 PB to store large and small files generated by businesses today and to meet the storage needs anticipated for the future. To keep these huge volumes of data safe and to remove interruptions from business operations, SONAS provides built-in high availability and fault tolerance for dependability, resiliency, and flexibility. IBM SONAS provides a globally clustered NAS file system built upon IBM General Parallel File System (IBM GPFS ). The global namespace is maintained across the cluster of multiple storage pods and multiple interface nodes. This capability permits all interface nodes and all storage nodes share equally in the cluster to balance workloads dynamically and provide parallel performance to all users and storage, which also ensures high availability (HA) and automated failover. The IBM SONAS storage system offers the following features: Provides extreme scalability to accommodate capacity growth for up to 21 PB Manages multiple petabytes of storage and billions of files in a single file system Provides excellent performance within a single file system Enables ubiquitous access to files from across the globe quickly and cost effectively with IBM Active Cloud Engine Provides operational efficiency with automated, policy-driven tiered storage Allows Automated lifecycle management and migration to tape Satisfies bandwidth hungry applications with scale-out performance Supports varied workloads including random access and streaming Enables disaster recovery and business continuity with asynchronous replication Supports file set snapshots and file cloning for increased availability Is simple to use and manage with an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) 4
