PREFACE International Invention, Innovation and Research Design Platform (IP-2013) is a collaboration between UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang and UiTM Cawangan Kedah. This collaboration aims to provide a platform to showcase innovations among academicians, industries and students in their respective disciplines. It is also in line with the government's desire to encourage innovation activities in Malaysia. The program is a competition of products, ideas and inventions that have the characteristics of a quality innovation. It is motivated by the previous success of the Innovation Platform 2012 (IP2012). This year IP-2013 received more than 200 products to be contested into three various categories which are A Category mainly for Academicians and Industry Players, B Category for Tertiary Institution Students and C Category for Secondary School Students. All entries will be judged by a jury of a academics and professionals in accordance with the prescribed areas. v

Tel: +6019-4483995, Fax:+604-3822747 Abstract : The present invention generally discloses a method for production of activated carbon from rice husk using chemical activation. The method comprises preparing a precursor using rice husk as a base material and treating said precursor with ZnCl 2. Rice husk was first washed to remove dirt and inorganic matters on their surfaces. The precursors were then dried in an oven to remove all the moisture. The dried precursors were sieved to the size of 3.0-4.0mm. A specific amount of rice husk and ZnCl 2 pellets (depending on the IR) were mixed and subject to chemical treatment for producing activated carbon. During 200
the chemical activation optimization is carried out to find the best parameters that produces the highest yield that best adsorb of zinc, copper and COD from urban runoff. Novelty uniqueness and : A method for production of activated carbon from rice husk using chemical activation, comprising: preparing a precursor; and treating said precursor with ZnCl2; characterized by optimizing said treating said precursor with ZnCl2 to produce activated carbon for best adsorption of zinc, copper and COD from urban runoff. Benefit to mankind : 1. To improve the water quality 2. To improve the solid waste management 3. To change waste materials to useful materials Potential commercialization : The product can be commercialized to the industries which produce high amount of heavy metals and COD especially manufacturing based industries as adsorbent to treat their wastewater and the product can be commercialized to water treatment plant or be used for drainage system. Biographical Data : Muhamad Faizal Pakir Mohamed Latiff obtained his B.Sc Hons in Civil Engineering from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2003 and MSc in Environmental Engineering from the same university in 2004. He is currently lecturer at Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Pulau Pinang and doing his PhD in Environmental Engineering, focusing on wastewater treatment. Biographical Data : Mohd Azrizal Bin Fauzi obtained his Bachelor (Hons.) of Civil Engineering at Universiti Teknologi MARA (May 2008), and completed a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Construction) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (Dec 2010. He currently serves as a lecturer at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Penang, Malaysia about 5 years of experience in teaching. He is also a member of the research center at the Institute of Engineering and Management Infrastructure Sustainability (IIESM). The Professional Affiliations that he involves are Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). The Concrete Society of Malaysia (PERKOM). Some of Research Interests & Group which he has followed is in the area of Advanced materials in architecture, composite materials and structures and composite materials and waste.
