Photoshop Tutorial: Removing the Background from an Image I. Downloading & Opening the file. II. Magic Wand (tomato) Click on the link on the class blog to download the file. Open Photoshop. Go to File -> Open, and select the location where you have downloaded veggies.psd (It is likely in your downloads folder.) It should look like this: Select the magic wand tool. Check the magic wand settings at the top of the screen to make sure they look like this: Click anywhere on the white background around the tomato. This should select most of the background. Hold down the shift key and click any remaining white areas to select them. Once you have all the white selected, press control + x to cut out the background. Your tomato should now look like the picture on the right: 1. III. Eraser (broccoli) In your layers palette, click on the eye next to the tomato to make the tomato layer invisible. Then click on the broccoli layer to select it (the layer should turn blue). 4. Select the eraser tool. You can make the eraser larger by pressing the right bracket key: } You can make the eraser smaller by pressing the left bracket key: { 5. Erase the background around the broccoli until it looks like this: 2. 3. Try to use the magic wand tool to select the background around the broccoli. It will not work very well because the broccoli is too similar a color to the background. At the top of the screen, choose select -> deselect to undo the magic wand s selection.

IV. Elliptical Marquee (onion) 1. In your layers palette, click on the eye next to the broccoli to make the broccoli layer invisible. The click on the onion layer to select it (the layer should turn blue). 5. Select the layer labeled onion in photoshop. We do not need this layer anymore, since we have cut the onion out of it. 2. Click and hold on the marquee tool in the toolbar. Several other options should pop up. Select the elliptical marquee tool. 6. 7. Click on the trash can icon at the bottom of the layers palette to delete the onion layer. Then double click on the layer where you recently pasted your cut out onion, and rename the layer onion. 3. 4. Click and drag the elliptical marquee tool to draw a circle the same size as the onion slice. It is ok if it does not line up perfectly; you can use your arrow tools to nudge the marquee into place. Press control + x to cut the onion. Then press control + v to paste the onion on a new layer. Your cutting board should look like this:

V. Polygonal Lasso (celery) VI. Magnetic Lasso (mushroom) In the layers palatte, click the eye next to the onion layer to make it invisible. Then click on the celery layer to select it. It should turn blue. In the toolbar, click and hold the lasso tool. Other options should pop up. Select the polygonal lasso tool. In the layers palatte, click the eye next to the celery layer to make it invisible. Then click on the mushroom layer to select it. It should turn blue. In the toolbar, click and hold the polygonal lasso tool. Other options should pop up. Select the magnetic lasso tool. At the top of the screen, set the options so they look like this: You will now outline the celery using the polygonal lasso tool. Click with the lasso on one of the edges of the celery. Then click on the next point where the angle of the celery changes to set another point. Continue until you have outlined the top two pieces of celery: You will now outline the mushroom using the magnetic lasso tool. Click and hold with the lasso on one of the edges of the mushroom. Trace around the edges of the mushroom without letting go of the mouse. Once you have trace the enter mushroom, you may release the left side of the mouse. The entire mushroom should now be selected. Press control + x to cut the mushroom. Then press control + v to paste the mushroom onto a new layer. Your cutting board should now look like this: Press control + x to cut the celery. Then press control + v to paste the celery onto a new layer: Select the layer named celery. We do not need this layer anymore, since we have cut the top two sticks out of it. Click on the trash can icon at the bottom of the layers palette to delete this layer. Select the layer named mushroom. We do not need this layer anymore, since we have cut out the mushroom. Click on the trash can icon at the bottom of the layers palette to delete this layer. Then double-click on the layer you pasted the celery onto and rename it celery. Then rename the layer that now contains the mushroom mushroom.

VII. Duplicating Layers VIII. Free Transform In the layers palette, click the eye next to each layer to make all the layers visible: Now we will transform the second broccoli layer so the two broccoli florets do not look identical. Go to Edit-> Free Transform. Now we will duplicate the broccoli layer. Select the broccoli layer in the layers palette. Then go to layer->duplicate layer: Go to the corner of the bounding box around the broccoli floret, and rotate the broccoli. You can also scale the broccoli by holding down the shift key and dragging the box in at the corner. Your layers palette should now look like this: Before After When you are happy with the transformation, press enter or return on the keyboard. Photoshop will ask you if you want to apply the transformation. Click apply.

IX. Flip Horizontal X. Drop Shadow Now we will create a mirror image of the broccoli floret. Go to layer-> duplicate layer. Then go to Edit->Transform->Flip horizontal: Now we will make our broccoli cast a shadow. Click on the fx button at the bottom of the layers palette: Select drop shadow, and adjust the values so they match these: Your broccoli floret should look like it is casting a shadow: You should now have two broccoli florets that are mirror images of each other: XI. Saving your file. 1. Save your file as a.psd (that can be edited later). Go to File -> Save as. The default format should be Photoshop. Name your file Lastname_First_Initial_veggies, select your username as the location, and hit save. 2. Save your file as a.png (that can be posted to your blog). Go to File -> Save as. Under format, select PNG from the drop down menu. Name your file Lastname_First_Initial_veggies, select your username as the location, and hit save.
