3. Introduction Thank you for purchasing a Sarspec s spectrometer. Sarspec s spectrometers are designed and optimized for UV/Vis/NIR applications, offering solutions for general purpose spectroscopy with the SPEC STD, high optical resolution (up to 0.2 nm) measurements with the SPEC RES+, low light level measurements with the SPEC SENSE+ and fast acquisition rate (up to 2857 spectra/sec) with the SPEC SPEED+. The flexibility of the SPEC range spectrometers allows to perform multiple applications with a single instrument and with a universal SMA905 connector using optical fibers to direct and collect light from basically everywhere without complex optical systems or significant attenuation. Also available in all models are trigger In/Out for synchronization with other devices like light sources or signal generators and in some models power supply and data transfer are made by a single USB 2.0 connection. All SPEC series spectrometers come as Standard configurations, with listed specifications, for different wavelength ranges/resolution/application or can be user configured. For the user configured spectrometers almost every component can be chosen to perfect match the user s application. Support from Sarspec s specialists is always available for the best configuration/performance. Every spectrometer is supplied with the powerful LightScan or LightScan+ software, including full modules for parameters control, data acquisition and processing. Combine SPEC s series with Light Sources, Optical Fibers, Probes and Accessories to get the right solution for your application.

4. Installation and Operation NOTE: Install first the device drivers and the Software before USB connection. Please refer to the LightScan Manual or Quick Start. 1. Unpack the spectrometer and remove all the protective plastic. 2. Place it in a clean and flat surface. 3. Install the device drivers and the software on the PC. Please refer to the Software Manual or the Quick Start. 4. For the SPEC STD and SPEC RES+ models plug the USB cable from the spectrometer into an available USB 2.0 port on the PC (see figure below). Note: For these models the USB cable is used both for data transfer and power the spectrometer..

5. For the SPEC Speed+ and SPEC Sense+ models plug the USB cable from the spectrometer into an available USB 2.0 port on the PC. Also plug the power adaptor into a wall outlet and into the 5V socket of the spectrometer (see figure below). 6. For the SPEC NIR model plug the USB cable from the spectrometer into an available USB 2.0 port on the PC, and plug the power adaptor into a wall outlet and into the 24V socket of the spectrometer (figure below). The RS- 485 interface and opto-isolated PLC are disabled. This connections were introduced for future developments.

7. Remove the protective cap from the SMA905 socket and insert a compatible optical fiber (see figure below). Notice: Use only compatible optical fibers with SMA905 connector, otherwise it could destroy the entrance slit. 8. Run the LightScan/LightScanPlus software previously installed and have full control of the spectrometer. Please refer to the Software Manual.

4.1. Notes The Sarspec s logo on the top of the spectrometer will lit on once in operation with the software. It can be switched ON/OFF in the Tools Menu. There are two SMA connectors, Trigger IN and Trigger OUT, for the synchronization with external devices as signal generators and light sources. Trigger IN signal should be +5V TTL compatible, the sync occurs in the rising edge and it is possible to set a delay by software. Trigger OUT signal is +5V TTL compatible.

5. Calibration All spectrometers are factory calibrated before shipping and supplied with a Wavelength Calibration Certificate that includes all calibration parameters. We recommend the recalibration of the spectrometers every year for accurate results. Contact Sarspec at info@sarspec.com for spectrometer recalibration. 6. Maintenance Unplug the spectrometer from any connections and protect the entrance slit with the supplied cap before proceed. Clean the external surfaces using a soft cloth. Do not use any abrasive cleaners. Do not allow any liquid to drip into the unit.

8. Typical Applications 8.1. Absorbance As full pack for Absorbance measurements all SPEC Packs are configured with wide range UV/Vis/NIR spectrometers, Light Source DW (Deuterium Tungsten) and different accessories depending on the application. The image below refers to the Absorbance SPEC PACK CUV (for cuvettes). Other options available include the Absorbance SPEC PACK PROBE for Absorbance measurements using Transmittance Probes in reaction vessels and the Absorbance SPEC PACK FLOW for Absorbance measurements using flow cells.

8.2. Reflectance The general configuration consists of a SPEC STD spectrometer configured with 25 µm slit, light source, reflectance probe, probe holder and reflectance standard. LightScan software is also included in this package with a specific module for Reflectance measurements allowing Calibration, Multi-spectra, Quantification, etc. One important feature is that reflectance measurements can be performed with time. This configuration can be purchased for the visible range using a Tungsten Light Source (LS-W) and Vis/NIR SPEC STD Spectrometer or for the Ultraviolet/Visible range using a Deuterium Tungsten High Power and SPEC STD Spectrometer.

8.3. Fluorescence When performing Fluorescence measurements, in most applications, sensitivity is a key factor and at Sarspec we take it seriously. The configurations offered takes the sensitivity to a new level. By using back thinned detectors with quantum efficiency up to 78% and 1 mm height pixel elements combined with large 200 µm slits and collecting lens make all the difference in the detection of fluorescence signal. Combining the detector with high power LEDs from LS-LED Light Source - with easily interchangeable LEDs - customers can have a sensitive and flexible solution for a fraction of the cost of a traditional spectrofluorimeter. For UV excitation we recommend the Xenon Flashlamp Light Source LS-XeF. The configuration from the image below is a Fluorescence SPEC PACK CUV (for cuvettes), please visit www.sarspec.com for the available configurations.
