You can use Turnitin to set up assignment submission points in your VLE site, which students can use to submit eir assessed work. The text of ese files will en be checked against a wide range of online sources, including a database of previously submitted papers, online journal databases, and websites. Turnitin will en produce an originality report detailing any matches, and you can choose wheer or not to make is available to your students. Creating a Turnitin assignment submission point 1. First you will need to check at e Turnitin tool is switched on wiin your VLE site. To do is, go to e Control Panel for your module, and click on Manage Tools (bottom left of e screen under Course Options). You will need to go into bo Building Block Tool Availability and Content Type Availability, and check at e Turnitin options are ticked. Click Submit to save any changes. 2. Next, you will need to decide where in your site you want e submission point(s) to appear. You may want to create a new content area for Assignments so at your students can find e right area more easily. Go into e Content Area you want to use: Copyright The University of York 10 1 January 10

3. From e drop-down menu at e top right of e screen, choose Turnitin UK Assignment. Click e Go button to add e assignment point. 4. You will now be presented wi a choice. The standard option is Paper Assignment is allows you to create a link for your students to use to submit eir work. You also have a choice of creating a Revision assignment (to keep a record of multiple drafts), or a PeerMark assignment. The University currently only has a limited number of licences for e PeerMark tool, so if you would like to try is, please contact e team. Creating a Paper Assignment Choose e Paper Assignment option and click e Next Step button. Fill in a title for e assignment, is will indicate to students which link to use if ere is more an one submission point in e VLE site. You can also assign a points value if you intend to use e online grading options to provide grades to your students. Copyright The University of York 10 2 January 10

Set e dates for e assignment start date indicates when e link will appear to e students in e VLE site, and due date indicates when e students will no longer be able to submit (unless late submissions are enabled). These dates will be displayed to e students when ey click on e submission link. The post date is only used if you intend to use e anonymous marking feature and/or e online paper marking feature (known as GradeMark). If you would like to use GradeMark, please contact e team for more details. Oerwise you will just need to ensure at is is set to a date after e due date. There are a number of additional options you can set, which you can save as your default settings for each time you create a new assignment point. To view ese, click e More options button. Options Special instructions: it s good practice to clarify any additional assignment settings here to make your students aware of em (e.g. wheer ey can submit multiple drafts, wheer and when ey can see eir reports etc). QuickMark: is only applies to e online grading tool, GradeMark. Generate Originality Reports for submissions: it is possible to use Turnitin as a straightforward file submission point wiout running comparison checks. Generate Originality Reports for student submissions: This allows you to set how many times a student can submit, and when ey will get eir report. Immediately, first report is final: students can only submit once and will see e report straight away. Submissions must be deleted by e instructor before a student can resubmit. Immediately (can overwrite reports until due date): students can submit as many times as ey like until e due date, and will receive a report for each submission. The submitted file will be overwritten each time, so only e most recent paper and report are available (if you would like to be able to review each draft, use a Revision Assignment). Note at reports for resubmissions take longer to generate up to 24 hours. On due date: students can submit as many times as ey like, but will not see a report until e due date. Excluding materials: it is possible to ask Turnitin to automatically exclude bibliographies and quotes from every paper submitted. It should be noted ough at is is not always accurate and relies on correct formatting of e paper (e.g. references in Harvard format). These settings can also be applied on a paper-by-paper basis when viewing e reports. It is also possible to exclude small matches from appearing in e report (e.g. fragments of sentences). If you choose yes for is option, you can select what is considered a significant match by e number of words, or by percentage of e overall text. Allow students to see Originality Reports: if you choose not to use Turnitin as a formative tool, you can use is option e reports will still be generated but will only be available to staff. Allow submissions after e due date: you can opt to Copyright The University of York 10 3 January 10

allow students to continue to submit after e due date, and late submissions will be marked in red in e instructor view of e assignments. Note at is option will not work if you allow multiple submissions, as it is not possible to overwrite an existing file after e due date has passed. Also, is setting makes e option available to all students on e VLE site. Enable anonymous marking: This option will hide e student names associated wi e uploaded files until e post date. Alough ere is an option to override is on a paper-bypaper basis, you will be asked to provide a reason for revealing e names in advance of is date. If using is you should advise students not to include eir name in e paper itself. Submit papers to: By default papers are submitted to e Turnitin database on e assignment due date, for checking against future submissions. Please note at it is advisable to choose not to submit ese files to e database, for IPR and data protection reasons. Note: academic staff can also submit eir own work to e database to be matched against future submissions. Search options: you can use e checkboxes to identify what type of materials you would like to include in e matches. The default option is to search all of ese. Creating a Revision Assignment Revision assignments allow you to attach a new submission point to an assignment, so at students can submit multiple drafts, and each of e papers and reports will be available for review. Most of e settings of e original assignment will be retained, alough you do have e option to change e dates and also e options for generating e reports. To create a revision assignment, go to e Content Area where you want e link to appear (to save confusion you may want to add it in to e same area as e original submission link, e new link will have Revision 1 added to e title to differentiate it). Choose e Turnitin option from e drop-down menu (as above), and select Revision Assignment. You can en set e new dates and report options for is assignment. Submitting papers It is wor noting at staff and students can bo submit papers using e same assignment link, alough e options are different for different users. For more details on e student view, see e student user guide. If you click on e View/Complete link as an instructor, you will see a number of options for submitting files in e drop-down menu at e top of e form. Single file upload: is process is similar to e upload process for students. If you are submitting e paper on behalf of a student, you can select eir name from e drop-down list. If not (for example if you are submitting your own work), you can type in e name of e auor. Multiple file upload: is allows you to select a number of files one by one and fill in e details for each one. You Copyright The University of York 10 4 January 10

might use is if you are submitting assignments you have received by oer electronic means (e.g. email), for a small cohort of students. Cut and paste upload: you can use is to copy e text of a file if it has been created in a format at is not accepted by Turnitin. Zip file upload: you can upload a zipped folder of multiple files is can save time if you have a large cohort of students and you have not asked em to submit e files emselves. You can en go rough and add e student details to each file, or use e filenames if appropriate. You should check e folder for duplicate files or unsupported file types before uploading. NOTE: Turnitin supports e following file types: MS Word (doc and docx), WordPerfect, PostScript, PDF, HTML, RTF and plain text. PDF files must contain text at can be recognised by e software, not text at has been scanned as an image. To check is, try to copy and paste e text from a PDF file into a text program, like Notepad. Individual file sizes should not exceed MB, and zipped files should not exceed 0MB. Viewing submissions and reports e Assignment Inbox To view all of e files at have been submitted to an assignment point, go to e Control Panel, and click on TurnitinUK Assignments. You will see a list of all e assignments at have been created in your VLE site. Click on e View link for e Assignment you want to check, and you will be taken to e Assignment Inbox. Understanding e Assignment Inbox On is screen you will see a list of auors and submission titles for all of e files at have been submitted to is assignment. Names of students enrolled on e module will appear as links, and names at have been entered by e instructor on submission will appear in black. Copyright The University of York 10 5 January 10

If you have chosen to allow anonymous marking, you will not see e student names listed until e due date has passed. By is point you should have graded all e papers and provided e relevant feedback note at you can use e Edit Assignment option on e left of e screen at any time to extend is date if necessary. You also have e option to override e anonymous setting. To do is, click e Anonymous Marking Enabled button. Note is cannot be undone once e anonymity of a submission has been removed. The ird column shows a list of links to e originality reports, wi a percentage and colour indication of e quantity of matching text. Note at if is square is greyed out, e report has not yet been generated (is can take up to 24 hours for resubmissions): There are also columns to add a grade online, mark e paper online using GradeMark, and download e original file in e format it was submitted. Each paper also has a unique ID, and a date when e file was submitted (note at if e file was submitted after e due date, is will be indicated in red, and if no submission has been made by e due date, is will be indicated by e word late in red): You can click on any of e linked column headings (auor, title, report or date) to sort e list by is criterion. You can also use e checkboxes to e left of e auor name to select files, and delete em (e.g. to allow a student to re-submit), download multiple files, or move files between e folders (ere are separate folders available for new, viewed or marked files). You should also note at e default screen shows only new papers use e tabs above e list to see all papers, or papers you have already viewed or marked. Roster Sync Using is button allows you to ensure at all of e students enrolled on e VLE site are listed in e assignment inbox (student names will not oerwise appear here until e student has accessed e assignment). This will give you an overview of submissions across e cohort. You should also note at using is function will remove from e list any assignments at have been submitted by students who are no longer enrolled on e VLE site. If you need to access ese assignments again, you will need to re-enrol e student and re-sync e roster for e assignment. Viewing papers You can choose to view e original papers submitted by e students online, or to download em and open em in e default application (e.g. Microsoft Word). To view a paper online, click on e title of e paper. The paper will open in a new browser window, along wi e student details, date and time of submission, and word count. You can page rough e papers submitted by using e previous and next links. Copyright The University of York 10 6 January 10

To download a single paper, click on e paper icon in e file column. You will be given a choice of downloading e paper in its original format or as a pdf file. To download multiple papers, use e checkboxes next to e files, and click e download button. E-Learning Development Team You can also choose to view all e submissions of one student if ey are enrolled on e VLE module. Click on e student s name to see an overview of eir submissions: Viewing e Originality Report You can access e originality report by clicking on e coloured percentage icon in e report column of e inbox. This will open e report for at paper, and from ere you can use e next paper and previous paper links on e top right to page rough e reports. The report highlights sections of e text and numbers and colour-codes em to match e list of sources, displayed on e right (e numbers and colours used are not significant in emselves, ey are simply used to match up e results). Hovering your mouse over any highlighted text in e paper will highlight e match in e list, and clicking on e number given to e match will display e matching text in e context of e source. Copyright The University of York 10 7 January 10

If e match is a web link, you can also click on e link to see e original source. Turnitin will open e web page in a new browser window. If e match is a paper submitted rough Turnitin, clicking on e match will allow you to request to see e paper. This feature sends an email to e member of staff responsible for e Turnitin assignment where e paper was submitted (note at is may be at anoer institution). If your request is approved, you will receive an email reply wi e text or e original paper included. Additional options You can choose from is point to automatically exclude any matches to text in quotation marks, or in e bibliography (note is may not work as expected if e references are not formatted in e Harvard style). You can also choose to exclude small matches (e.g. fragments or short phrases) by number of words or percentage of e total. You can also choose to exclude specific matches (e.g. if you have checked e text and you are happy at it is referenced correctly). To do is, click e little cross at e top right of e box showing e source details. You will see a message telling you at is match can be restored later if required. You can also choose to switch between ree different display modes by selecting one from e drop down menu: Show Highest Matches Togeer: This is e default mode. Only e highest or closest matches are shown; all underlying matches are visible on e single source mode. You can also print e report, refresh it (i.e. run e originality check again), or download an html version of e report to save onto your computer. Grading Submissions Note: Students can access eir grades in two different places for Turnitin assignments. They can eier click on e original link to e assignment to view eir own assignment inbox, or click on Tools My Grades.
