The Features and Uses of Computer Networking Unit 11 Task 1
Features Office Network
Peer to peer A peer to peer network is mostly used in homes or small businesses. The network consists of two or more connected PCs that share resources like a printer and scanner and it does not have a server. Computers on a peer to peer network also does internet sharing, where computers connects to a computer that s already connected to the internet in a local area network to be able to access the internet. PCs on the network has to be set up individually but you can also set up a shared folder so the users can access the same and up to date files/documents.
PC s A PC is a computer device that can be used by one person at a time. It is an essential in an office for being able to do a lot of things. e.g. making, sending, and/or storing documents and files. A PC needs a network interface card to be able to connect to a network.
Wireless network A wireless network is any kind of network that uses data connection wirelessly. It is used to lessen wired connections that is said to be more expensive, and it is also good for health and safety for preventing someone from tripping and getting electric shocked. A wireless network allows us to use our devices access the internet almost anywhere we go. WI-FI is one example of a wireless network, it is mostly use in a local area network(lan) just like an office. Everybody in the office will be able to access the internet anywhere if they re going to use a wireless network.
Wireless router A router is a device that sends data packets through networks. Packets are messages that are being transmitted over packet-switching. A data packet also contains a destination address. A computer connects to a router to access the internet. A router is a device that sends data packets across networks. A router works wired or wireless on local area network. A local area network is computer network that is used on smaller area like house and/or offices. Two or more local area network connected together will be called a wide area network.
Hub / wireless access point A hub is a common access point for devices in a network. A hub is also like a switch and can connect multiple computers together. A disadvantage of a hub is when a hub receives a data, all the devices that s connected to it receives it as well instead of just the actual receiver.
Network interface card (NIC) A network interface card is a card that is installed in a computer to be able to connect it to a network. The Ethernet cable I might use for the network is a cat5e UTP(unshielded twisted pair). A UTP is not as fast as coaxial or a fiber optic but it is still mostly used on local area networks and telephone connections.
Permissions Permission is an authentication made by administrators to let the users access only what they need, and to protect documents on a computer network. Users might struggle on remembering their account usernames and passwords, but having this also makes your account more secure.
Uses Office Network
Sharing data Data sharing is used so that files that were saved on the network will be accessed on different computers. Those files and folders will be set up on server so users can access it but only with limited permissions.
Cloud storage Cloud storage is kind of the same to data sharing, other users will also be able to access files/documents through the same cloud storage on the different devices. But internet connection is needed to access the cloud, and an over-crowded connection gets really slow means they might struggle to access the cloud depending on the speed of their internet.
Shared printer A shared printer does not have to accessed on a specific computer, means all the computer in the office will be able to access the printer unlike the ones at home where it is only connected directly to one computer.
Features Gaming Network
Server A server is a computer or device on a network that manages network resources. Servers are often dedicated, means it is focused only to their server task.
UTP cable The Ethernet cable I might use for the network is a cat5e UTP(unshielded twisted pair). An unshielded twisted pair is a type of cable that consist of two unshielded wires twisted around each other. Though a UTP is not as fast as coaxial or a fiber optic but it is still being extensively used on local area networks and telephone connections for it being really cheap.
PC s A personal computer is a general-purpose, cost-effective computer that is designed to be used by a single enduser. A PC needs a network interface card to be able to connect to a network. PCs are normally used for multimedia entertainment, playing PC games, and/or accessing the internet.
Switch A switch is used to connect multiple computers to a server. It is a device that organize and sends packets between LAN segments. A switch can send data directly to its receiver whereas the hub sends it to all the devices that is connected to it. And some older ports are not compatible with a switch anymore.
Router / modem A router is used to connect a computer to the internet through wire or wirelessly. A modem is also used to connect a computer to the internet, it is wired and slower than the router.
NIC / network adapter A network adapter is installed to both computer and LAN server to transmit and receive data from the network.
Permission / Authentication Gamers need permission to let them modify the game or access the game settings if they wish to. Gamers should also be authenticated so they ll know that the gamers are not playing the game illegally. They will be authenticated by logging in to the system with their unique username and password, in that way users accounts will be more secured.
Firewall Firewall is a security system that is implemented to prevent access to private networks that is unauthorized. You are going to need this if your going to connect your computer to the internet. It runs for both software and hardware.
Windows server 2008 This operating system will be in used to be able to play the game. Server OS is an operating system that is made to run on servers. Other known server OS are Mac OS X Server and some Linux made ones.
Protocols Protocol is a language that computers on a network use to communicate and transfer data. VoIP Voice over Internet Protocol is one of the protocols that can be used in gaming. VoIP is method of real-time communication over the internet. It can be used while playing games through a video call or by just audio like a normal phone call but not having to pay extra bills as long as you have an internet connection.
Topologies Topologies is the types of arrangements of a computer system. There are two categories for topologies: Physical - The actual cabling layout of the network, its nodes and interconnection devices. Logical - The path that data takes as it passes through the network I ll be using a star topology for the gaming network, where all of the devices on a LAN will be connected to a central hub.
Uses Gaming Network
Shared folders Shared folders - to be able to access modified, saved or configured games if anyone, or you want to share it.
Communication Gamers communicate in the gaming network while playing online, it s like the free online call that you get with your smart phones, to be able to discuss things in the game. VoIP is a method of real-time communication over the internet, example of it is Skype, where audio and video gets transmitted as data between computers that are connected through IP addresses.
