Introduction Thank you for purchasing a StarTech.com Ultra2 SCSI host adapter card. This reliable synchronous PCI card can control up to 15 SCSI devices like CD-ROMs, CD-RWs, scanners and removable media devices. The dedicated on-board processor provides high-speed single-ended SCSI bus transfers at up to 80 MBytes/sec. The card also comes with a high quality 68-pin ribbon cable so that you can start attaching your internal SCSI peripherals right away. Features Supports up to 15 SCSI devices Transfers data at 80 MBytes/sec Includes on-board automatic SCSI termination and synchronous/asynchronous data transfer Backed by StarTech.com s lifetime warranty and technical support Before You Begin WARNING! PCI cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching your PCI card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface (such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI card by its edges and not the gold connectors. System Requirements An IBM-compatible computer running Windows XP/2000/ME/98/98SE/95/3.x, NT 4.0, DOS, NetWare, or OS/2 An available PCI slot Contents This package should contain: 1 x PCI SCSI card 1 x 68-pin internal SCSI cable 1 x Installation disk 1 x SCSI LVD/SE device terminator 1 x 1

Installation This section will guide you through the installation of your PCI card and the related software. Please read through the instructions carefully and complete each step in the order listed. Installing the Card PCI Slots 1. Make sure that your system is unplugged and you are grounded. 2. Remove the cover of your system (see your computer's user manual for details, if necessary) and gently turn your computer onto its side. 3. Locate an empty PCI slot (usually white in colour) and remove the metal plate that covers the rear bracket. You may need a Phillips screwdriver to perform this step. Retain the screw! You will need it to secure the card later. 4. Gently insert the card into the empty slot, making sure it is firmly seated. 5. Secure the card in place using the screw you removed in Step 3. 6. Physically install your SCSI devices into your case, following the instructions in their documentation. If you need more information about connecting and terminating your devices on the SCSI card, please see the next subsection, Connecting and Terminating Your SCSI Devices below before closing the case. Otherwise, connect the data cables to both the card and your devices(s) as needed, and complete step 7. 7. Put your computer case back on. NOTE: You may also wish to use the card s integrated SCSI BIOS utility to view and configure SCSI devices attached to the card. You can access this utility by following the on-screen instructions at boot-up. 2

Connecting and Terminating Your SCSI Devices 1. Connect one end of your internal SCSI ribbon cable to your SCSI card, making sure that the stripe faces pin 1 (marked). The connector that is furthest away from the other connectors should be connected to the card. NOTE: The cable connectors have been formed so that it is difficult to connect the devices in an improper fashion. 2. Connect the SCSI cable to your SCSI device, again making sure that the stripe faces pin 1. 3. Repeat step 2 for any other SCSI devices you wish to attach at this time. 4. When you have connected all your devices, you must make sure that both the internal and external chains of the SCSI bus are terminated. Most SCSI peripherals will come with their own terminators. Follow the instructions in the peripheral s user guide to terminate the SCSI chain. For your convenience, this product includes a LVD SCSI terminator. NOTE: StarTech.com offers a wide range of internal and external SCSI cables and terminators to suit your needs. Refer to the Accessory Products from StarTech.com section of this manual or visit www.startech.com for more information. Installing the Drivers Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP 1. On startup, Windows will detect that new hardware has been installed and launch the Add New Hardware Wizard. Click Next and choose the Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) (or Search for a suitable driver... if using Windows 2000/XP) option. Click Next. 2. Uncheck all boxes on this screen and click Next. 3. The Wizard will inform you that Windows is now ready to install the best driver for this device... Click Next.. The Wizard will complete the installation. Click Finish. 4. Restart the computer if prompted. Other Operating Systems Drivers are included on the installation disk for several other operating systems, including Windows 95 and NT 4.0. For more information about installing and configuring the card under those operating systems, please refer to the text files contained in the folder on the disk that matches your operating system. 3

Verifying Your Installation Windows 98SE/ME 1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2. Double click System. 3. Click the Hardware tab. 4. If the card does not appear with a red x or yellow exclamation point (!) next to it, Windows has not detected a problem with the installation and the card should function normally. Windows 2000/XP 1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2. Double click System. 3. Click the Hardware tab and choose Device Manager. 4. If the card does not appear with a red x or yellow exclamation point (!) next to it, Windows has not detected a problem with the installation and the card should function normally.
