Introduction Thank you for purchasing a StarTech.com ATA/133 IDE controller card. This product is perfect for adding additional hard drives and other IDE/ATAPI compliant devices to a computer that does not have any available IDE connections, replacing a failed onboard IDE controller, or upgrading a computer to take advantage of ATA/133 speeds. The card uses a jumperless Plug and Play installation and is fully compliant with industry standards for maximum compatibility. Features Fast burst data transfer rates with ATA/133-compliant drives: up to 133 MBytes/sec. Includes native hardware bus mastering and DMA access support Backed by StarTech.com s lifetime warranty and technical support Before You Begin WARNING! PCI cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching your PCI card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface (such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI card by its edges and not the gold connectors. System Requirements An IBM-compatible computer with an available PCI slot Hardware-level support for attached drives, but advanced drivers are included for: Windows 98/98SE/NT4/ME/2000, Windows XP includes native drivers, DOS (required for CD-ROMs only) Contents This package should contain: 1 x ATA/133 IDE PCI Controller Card 1 x 80-wire IDE Data Cable 1 x Installation Disk 1 x 1

Installation This section will guide you through the installation of your card. Please read through the instructions carefully and complete each step in the order listed. If you are using Windows 98, 98SE, or ME, please follow the software installation instructions on the next page before installing the card. Other users can install the card now before completing the software installation. Installing the Card PCI Slots 1. Make sure that your system is unplugged and you are grounded. 2. Remove the cover of your system (see your computer's user manual for details, if necessary) and gently turn your computer onto its side. 3. Locate an empty PCI slot (usually white in color) and remove the metal plate that covers the rear bracket. You may need a Phillips screwdriver to perform this step. Retain the screw! You will need it to secure the card later. 4. Gently insert the card into the empty slot, making sure it is firmly seated. 5. Secure the card in place using the screw you removed in Step 3. 6. Install the devices you wish to use with the card into the case following the instructions provided in their documentation. 7. Use the 80-wire IDE cable (provided) to attach the devices you are using to the controller. Be sure to observe master/slave settings, and that the red stripe on the cable faces pin 1 on the connectors for both the card and the device. If you are attaching more than two devices to the controller, you will need to purchase an additional IDE cable. NOTE: The primary master device on the card must be a hard disk. 6. Put the computer case back on. 2

Installing the Drivers Windows 98/98SE/ME 1. Insert the installation disk in the drive. Double click My Computer. 2. Double click the icon that represents your floppy drive. Double click the win9x folder. 3. Double click the setup680.exe file. Follow the on-screen instructions to copy the software. 4. At the end of the installation process, you may be prompted to restart the computer. Choose No. 5. Go to the Start menu and shut down the computer. Complete the card installation instructions on page 2. Windows 2000 1. Windows will launch the Add New Hardware Wizard. Click Next. 2. Choose the Search for a suitable driver... option and click Next. 3. Check only the Floppy disk drives option. Ensure the installation disk is inserted in the floppy drive. Click Next.. 4. Windows will display a message stating that Windows has found a driver for this device. Click Next. Choose Yes or Continue Anyway if you are warned that the driver file has not been digitally signed. 5. WIndows will display a message that states Windows has finished installing software for this device. Click Finish. 6. Windows will continue to detect and install any remaining new devices. If the Add New Hardware Wizard is launched again, repeat steps 1 through 6 from above. Windows XP Windows XP includes the drivers needed for this device. It will automatically install the necessary hardware when the device is detected. Windows NT 4.0 Consult the readme.txt file on the installation disk for more information about configuring this product in Windows NT. DOS (for CD-ROM installation only) If you wish to connect CD-ROMs to the PCI2IDE133, view the instructions in the dos folder on the installation disk for more details on configuring your startup files. Hard disks do not require additional software. 3

Verifying Your Installation Windows 98SE/ME 1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2. Double click System. 3. Click the Hardware tab. 4. If the card does not appear with a red x or yellow exclamation point (!) next to it, Windows has not detected a problem with the installation and the card should function normally. Windows 2000/XP 1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2. Double click System. 3. Click the Hardware tab and choose Device Manager. 4. If the card does not appear with a red x or yellow exclamation point (!) next to it, Windows has not detected a problem with the installation and the card should function normally. Troubleshooting Q: I have installed the Intel chipset update for my motherboard and am experiencing problems with Standby Mode or am getting a Write Fault Error intermittently. How can I correct this? A: The Intel chipset updater causes known conflicts with the driver for the controller card. To correct this problem, try one of the following solutions: If you are experiencing problem with Standby Mode (also referred to a hibernation ), uninstall the Intel chipset update using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. If you are experiencing the Write Fault Error message, uninstall the the Intel chipset update using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and/or ensure that there is at least one IDE/ATAPI device installed on the motherboard s IDE controller. Q: I am attempting to install Roxio/Adaptec Easy CD Creator and am receiving a Windows Protection Error message. How can I correct this? A: Move all optical drives (CD/DVD-ROMs, CD/DVD-RWs, etc.) to either the onboard IDE controller or the PC2IDE133 card. Hard disk drives can be attached to either controller. Q: How can I maximize the performance of the drives connected to the PCI2IDE133? A: Since IDE/ATAPI devices on the same channel share bandwidth, the card will automatically slow down the data transfer rate to accommodate the slowest device on that channel. So, if you have a CD-ROM slaved to a ATA/133 hard disk on the card s primary channel, the hard disk will not be able to deliver top performance, but will maintain compatibility with the CD-ROM. To avoid this problem, ensure that ATA/133 devices (hard disks, in particular) are located on a separate channel from slower devices. You can use the card s secondary channel or the motherboard s onboard IDE controller for CD-ROMs and other slow devices. Q: How can I control the order in which IDE devices are detected by the BIOS? A: The BIOS will detect drives in the following order: Onboard Primary IDE Channel (master [0], then slave [1]) Onboard Secondary IDE Channel (master [2], then slave [3]) PCI2IDE133 Primary IDE Channel (master [4], then slave [5]) PCI2IDE133 Secondary IDE Channel (master [6], then slave [7]) Note that drive position in the order noted above may affect drive letter assignments in Windows and other operating systems. The first hard disk--regardless of where it is installed in this order--is normally considered the boot drive by most BIOSes. If you want to use a hard disk on the PCI2IDE133 as your boot drive, you cannot have any hard disks installed on the onboard IDE controller. 5
