VE9121 Series Classroom Audio Management System The purpose of this document is to provide familiarity with the connections and switch settings necessary to successfully install the VE9121 series of classroom audio management systems. In this document, any references to Valcom Intercoms are specifically to the Class Connection, Valcom MultiPath, VC-24, or V-2924A products. The VE9121 is designed to provide local sound reinforcement for educators and the many audiovisual tools used in today s modern classroom. When used with a Valcom IR microphone system, the VE9121 features integrated control and mixing of up to 4 line level audio sources, classroom intercom audio as well as reinforcement of verbal lecture materials. Although designed for seamless integration with Valcom intercom systems, the VE9121 may also be integrated with existing antiquated 25-volt intercoms. The Classroom Audio Management System features an independent, removable, volume control for each of the 4 line level inputs and each of the 2 possible IR microphones. Audio from the 4 line level inputs is automatically reduced when the IR microphone is in use thus allowing students to focus on verbal instruction. In addition, treble and bass adjustment and a master volume control are provided for classroom audio refinement. The VE9121 is available in recessed, shelf or rack mount configurations. Model numbers are VE9121-W (recessed - white), VE9121-SSBK (recessed stainless steel), VE9121- RBK (19 rack mountable black), and VE9121 (shelf). Designed to wall mount in a 2- inch deep 3-gang electrical box, the VE9121-W and VE9121-SSBK do not require precious desk space or exposed system wiring. In new installations, 24 VDC may be centrally provided to multiple classrooms via structured cabling. CAUTION: IR microphone systems may have reception issues when used in classrooms featuring IR based occupancy sensors or other IR generating equipment. It is advisable to test interoperability of all electronic systems in a model classroom before deploying systems facility wide. Many system options are set via 8 systems dipswitches. There are 2 types in manufacture. If your VE9121 does not have the lever type dipswitches, then carefully remove the center cover plate to access the dipswitches. The negative output of the power supply for the VE9121 must be connected with the negative output of the power supply for the intercom. In most cases, connecting both to building electrical ground will accomplish this. *Note: If a Valcom 2-way intercom is connected to J1 ICM +/-, and it is not possible to provide a common ground as described above, then use the dip switch settings for Non-Valcom 2-way Intercom Connected to ICM +/-. - 3-947667

Mute Applying 24 VDC (10 ma) (This input is not polarity sensitive) to this input mutes the audio originating from any of the 4 auxiliary inputs (J4), mutes the audio from the IR microphone(s) and mutes any audio originating on the line level input of J1. If the mute is applied while audio is present on the line level input of J1, the audio will continue until silence is detected. Intercom audio is not affected by the mute input. Line In (J1) This may be connected to a line level audio source such as a Valcom one-way paging control. Audio introduced on Line In is available on the switched outputs, amplified out and line out. When line level audio is present on Line In, the audio originating from any of the 4 auxiliary inputs and/or the IR microphone is muted. Dipswitches 2 and 3 must be on in order to use the Line In input. +24 (J1) Connects to a filtered 24 VDC power supply providing at least 500 ma. Connect the negative output of the supply to Earth ground. Power Switch (Front) Used to turn the VE9121 on when in use and off when idle. In certain conditions, such as when the VE9121 output is connected to an amplifier or amplified speakers, failure to turn the power switch off when the unit is not in use may result in undesired idle speaker noise. Call (J1) Connects to the intercom system s call button input associated with the area served by this VE9121 (if applicable). ICM (J1) Connects to the intercom system s speaker output associated with the area served by this VE9121 (if applicable). 45-ohm/25-volt Switch Adjust to match the type of intercom connected to the VE9121. The switch must be set to 45-ohm for stand-alone operation. Set to 25- volt when the intercom source is a VE8045 or VE8025. Intercom Call Button Output (J8) Connects to the intercom call button associated with the area served by this VE9121 (if applicable). Switched Output (J8) Connects to up to 2 intercom speakers. The speakers may be either 45-ohm or 25-volt. If they are 25-volt, they should be tapped at no more than ½ Watt. Note that if the IR receiver speaker is terminated, it will serve as one of the 2 possible intercom speakers. Amplified Output (J8) Optionally connects to additional broadcast speakers. It can connect to either two 45-ohm speakers or two 25-volt speaker tapped at ½ watt. The type of speaker accommodated is dependent upon the position of the 45-ohm/25-volt Switch. - 5-947667
Line Out (J8) Optionally connects to a local amplifier, assisted listening transmitter or to Valcom Self Amplified Speakers. IR Receiver Input (J2) Connects to the IR receiver/speaker combination. Refer to the installation manual, or label, for the IR receiver/speaker that you are using. 4 Auxiliary Inputs (J4) Auxiliary audio from local sound sources (PCs, VCRs, CD players, projectors, etc) may either be connected to the screw terminal inputs (monophonic audio only)* or to the four 1/8 th inch stereo phone jacks on the front of the VE9121. When utilizing the four 1/8 th inch stereo phone jacks, the VE9121 will mix left and right channel audio. The screw terminal auxiliary inputs and the four 1/8 th inch stereo phone jacks on the front are not physically connected. Making simultaneous connections to a screw terminal auxiliary input and its corresponding 1/8 stereo phone jack is not advisable. Removable plastic plugs are provided in the 1/8 stereo phone jacks. These should be removed if the corresponding screw terminal aux input is not connected. All audio, from all inputs, the IR microphone(s), the Line In (J1), the 4 auxiliary inputs (J4) and the ICM input (J1) will be available on all outputs on J8 (switched outputs, amplified out and line out). The exception to this is talkback intercom announcements from Valcom Intercoms and audio from any non-valcom intercoms. Talkback intercom announcements from Valcom Intercoms and any audio originating from non-valcom intercoms will only be available on the Switched Output (J8). Aux input (J4) and IR microphone audio is muted during intercom announcements. When using non-valcom intercoms, or VE8045s/VE8025s, dipswitch 2 must be on. When dipswitch 2 is on, a 15 second timer circuit provides the muting. Local audio returns 15 seconds after the last intercom broadcast audio is sensed. * When connecting a stereo source to the monophonic screw terminals, use a V- 9130-W Remote Input Module per source. The V-9130-W Remote Input Module mixes stereo audio to monophonic. It is designed to mount in a single gang electrical box. - 6-947667
Speaker Taps and Placement VE9121 systems typically use 2 to 4 speakers (one being the IR Microphone receiver speaker). The speakers should be evenly located above the audience. Optimal placement of the ceiling mounted IR Microphone receiver speaker is the center section of the room. The presenter wearing the microphone should have an unobstructed view of the IR receiver. In the interest of balanced audio levels, all speakers attached to the VE9121 should all be set to the same volume tap setting or volume level. Tapping speakers at their highest volume in inadvisable and will result in feedback. System Volume The volume of audio sources connected to J1 is determined by the source and the speaker tap or volume settings of speakers connected to the VE9121. The VE9121 volume controls do not control audio introduced on J1. The volume of IR microphone channels A and B are determined by the position of the mic A and mic B volume controls. The microphone volume should be set to a level such that the person using the microphone cannot hear themselves. The volume of audio from the 4 auxiliary inputs, front or back connections, is determined by the individual auxiliary volume controls. Overall volume of the audio from the 4 auxiliary inputs may be controlled by the master volume control. - 7-947667
